Toronto Raptors mailbag: Who should they draft, plus Masai Ujiri's future

Article content If you missed Part 1 of the mailbag, which had a lot of trade talk, it's here. From Various people: 'Do you think the lottery was rigged, because it sure as hell seemed like it was!!!' RW: No. It's a lottery, weird things happen. We saw Atlanta win with minuscule odds last year, the New York Islanders and Utah Whatevers make massive jumps in the NHL lottery this year and the days of lotteries going mostly chalk are long gone. There are too many security procedures in place for it to be rigged. I simulated the lottery 25 times on Tankathon and Dallas only moved up twice, to second and to fourth (Toronto moved into the Top 4 several times). Dan: 'With the East not having many great teams, what do you think is the likelihood the Raptors attempt to upgrade their talent with a large-ish trade or two? I'm thinking trading a youth or two for a solid big makes sense for this group as currently constructed.'

Raptors GM Sends Clear Message Before NBA Draft

The Toronto Raptors finished 30-52 this past season, the seventh-worst record in the NBA. They now have a 31.9 percent chance to land a top-four 2025 NBA Draft pick and a 7.5 percent chance to get the No. 1 spot, via Tankathon. This draft class features college stars Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, and Ace Bailey, along with promising players such as Tre Johnson and VJ Edgecombe. The Raptors' last pick was guard/forward Gradey Dick out of Kansas at No. 13 overall in 2023, who averaged 14.4 points on 41 percent shooting (35 percent 3 PT) with 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists this season. However, Toronto general manager Bobby Webster is still hungry to add more talent, via TSN. "If you look back, I think this will be our fourth lottery pick since we've [this regime has] been here. You think back to Jakob [Poetl] at nine, Scottie at four, Gradey at 13," he continued. "When we do have one of these picks this high, there's an increased awareness and focus within the organization to do our background and select the player that fits best for us." How to watch NBA draft lottery: Can Sixers keep top 6 protected pick?

The Philadelphia 76ers finished 24-58 in the 2024-25 in an extremely disappointing season when considering the championship expectations entering the year. The Sixers had a big 2024 offseason highlighted by the addition of 9-time All-Star Paul George, but nothing worked out the way they wanted to. After finishing with the fifth-worst record in the league, the focus shifts to the draft lottery on Monday night. The Sixers have a top 6 protected pick which means they have to land somewhere in the top 6 to keep their pick or else it goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the Al Horford trade from 2020. Saints practiced patience in the NFL draft, which could pay off in 2026

Saints practiced patience in the NFL draft, which could pay off in 2026 Credit where it's due -- the New Orleans Saints didn't get out over their skis in the 2025 NFL draft, and now they're set up for another big haul in 2026. For years, general manager Mickey Loomis traded future picks to move up and try to make instant impacts, sometimes making contact (on hits like Alvin Kamara and Erik McCoy) and sometimes striking out (on misses like Marcus Davenport and Trevor Penning). But this time, the Saints practiced restraint, and the result is a good group of assets to work with in next year's draft. The best way to rebuild an old and expensive roster is by stacking up draft picks and hitting on rookies. And you're more likely to hit when you get more swings at the plate. Here are the Saints' current picks in 2026, along with their projected slots from Tankathon: Round 1, Pick 2 Round 2, Pick 34 Round 3, Pick 66 Round 4, Pick 102 Round 4, Pick 138 (compensatory) Round 5, Pick 142 Round 6, Pick 183 Remember, the Saints traded their seventh-round pick (projected at No. 216) to the New England Patriots earlier this string in exchange for nose tackle Davon Godchaux. But there are a couple of uncertainties here. Most importantly, we don't know where the Saints will be picking in each round. Tankathon is low on them, and so are many oddsmakers, but jest because New Orleans is expected to win only three or four games this season it doesn't mean they will. They could surprise us and Kellen Moore could very well double or triple those win totals. For another thing, compensatory picks will not be awarded until next March. Right now the Saints are predicted to receive an extra fourth rounder after they lost Paulson Adebo to the New York Giants in free agency. In reality, that pick could end up being a third-round choice or a fifth rounder, or it may not convey at all. Over The Cap's Nick Korte has gotten very close to figuring out the NFL's comp picks formula, but nothing is official until the league office says so. It's possible the NFL argues signing a starter in free agency like Isaac Yiadom or Dillon Radunz balances out Adebo's departure. We'll just have to wait and see. Whether they make six picks or seven next year, it's refreshing to have seen the Saints spend all nine of their selections in the 2025 draft after stacking up too many four- and five-man classes in recent years.
