Ohtani hits 20th home run for 5th straight season
In Major League Baseball, Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers has hit 20 home runs for the fifth consecutive season. Facing the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, Ohtani aimed for a leadoff homer for the third straight game. He struck out in his first at-bat. But in his third at-bat in the top of the fourth, with two outs and a runner on first, he slammed the first pitch, a cutter, into the left-field stands. He became the first Major Leaguer to reach the 20-homer mark this season. Ohtani had two RBIs in this game and raised his batting average to .296. The home run was also his 13th in May, bringing him close to his personal record of 15 in one month. If he maintains his current pace, he will likely hit 58 homers this season. Ohtani's 20th home run came off Guardians starter Tanner Bibee. The outside cutter cleared the roughly 5.8-meter-high left-field fence in a high arc. The ball traveled 110.3 meters. The left-field fence at Progressive Field, the Guardians' home stadium, is higher than the fences in the right and center. It's nicknamed the "Little Green Monster" after the "Green Monster" -- the 11-meter-plus left-field fence at Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox. In the 80 games at Progressive Field last season, only two home runs were hit into the left-field stands by left-handed batters. Bibee looked stunned after Ohtani's homer. He later said: "I think a lot of people thought it was a popup. I mean, I did, too. I thought I was out of the inning. Not a lot of lefty hitters can go to the opposite field at our park." Dodgers teammate Max Muncy admitted he felt a bit of jealousy. He said Ohtani "basically mishits a fly ball today and it still goes out." Muncy added that Ohtani does "stuff that no normal human being can do." Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, "It was just one of those balls that when he hit it, it just kept going like a helium ball." Roberts noted that Ohtani and New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge have "a lot more margin for error" than other players.

Cleveland Guardians beat Tigers 7-0 in ALDS rematch
Carlos Santana had a two-run double in the fourth inning, Angel Martínez hit a solo homer in the fifth and Tanner Bibee threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Cleveland Guardians in a 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night. It was the first meeting between the teams since the Guardians won their AL Division Series last October. The AL-leading Tigers had won seven of nine games and Cleveland had lost seven of its previous 10. Bibee (4-4) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Jack Flaherty (2-6) gave up three runs on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. Flaherty had two strikeouts in the first inning, including the 1,000th of his career. After Kyle Manzardo walked in the fourth, Santana's double to center put the Guardians up 2-0. Tim Herrin replaced Bibee in the eighth and exited with the bases loaded and no outs. Trey Sweeney led off the inning with a walk, Javier Baez followed with an infield single and Justyn-Henry Malloy reached on a hit to center that outfielder Lane Thomas appeared to lose sight of in the lights. Cade Smith struck out the next three batters to strand all three runners. Cleveland earned a larger cushion in a four-run ninth that got a boost when third baseman Zach McKinstry was charged with a fielding error, allowing Santana to score after he led off with a walk. Flaherty started strong until José Ramírez singled with one out in the fourth inning when Cleveland broke a scoreless tie with two runs. Bibee's eight strikeouts were three more than he had in any of his previous nine starts this season. Detroit RHP Jackson Jobe (4-0, 4.12 ERA) and Cleveland RHP Slade Cecconi (0-1, 5.40) are the probable pitchers Friday night.

Tanner Bibee, Guardians shut out MLB-leading Tigers
May 23 - Tanner Bibee tossed seven impressive innings to help lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-0 win over the host Detroit Tigers on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series. Bibee (4-4) struck out a season-high eight, allowed just three hits and issued one walk while throwing 96 pitches. Angel Martinez had a solo home run and a two-run double and Jose Ramirez had two hits and an RBI for Cleveland, which won its second straight following a five-game skid. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (2-6) allowed three runs on three hits, walked three and struck out eight, including the 1,000th of his career. Over 6 2/3 innings, he threw 108 pitches. With a 3-0 lead, Cleveland pulled Bibee in favor of Tim Herrin in the eighth, and the Tigers started a rally. Detroit loaded the bases on a walk, an infield single and a fly ball that dropped after Lane Thomas lost the ball in the lights. Cade Smith came on for Herrin and put out the fire, striking out Akil Badoo, Zach McKinstry and Riley Greene. In the ninth, Cleveland tacked on four runs to make it 7-0, with a two-run double to left by Martinez serving as the signature blow. Matt Festa pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to help Cleveland complete a five-hit shutout. Javy Baez had two hits for Detroit, which has the best record in the majors. After three scoreless innings, the Guardians broke through with two runs in the fourth. Following a one-out single by Ramirez and a walk to Manzardo, Carlos Santana laced a two-run double to the gap in right-center to make it 2-0. In the fifth, Martinez hit a solo home run to right field to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead. --Field Level Media
