Chargers star Quentin Johnston rushed to hospital after getting knocked out cold by sickening blow to the head

Chargers receiver Quentin Johnston was hospitalized on Saturday night after suffering a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit. Johnston was going out to catch a pass from Justin Herbert in the first quarter when the Rams' Tanner Ingle hit him underneath his facemask and knocked him out cold. The receiver also slammed his head onto the turf as he fell, and displayed the 'fencing' concussion response as he briefly held his arms up while lying on his back. While players from both teams knelt and medical personnel tended to him, Johnston eventually moved his arms and legs, then sat up and walked to the cart that took him off the field. He could be seen holding his head on the sideline as he was carted to the locker room. The injury happened on the third play of the game and Johnston did not return. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh later told reporters that Johnston had indeed suffered a concussion. The receiver was also sent to the hospital as a 'precaution,' the coach said. The Chargers went on to narrowly lose 23-22 as Stetson Bennett had a strong game for the Rams. Johnston, who turns 24 on Sept. 6, caught 55 passes on 91 targets last season for 711 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns. The 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of TCU, he has 93 career receptions for 1,142 yards and 10 TDs in 32 regular season games (21 starts).

Chargers star Quentin Johnston knocked out cold after sickening blow to the head

Chargers receiver Quentin Johnston exited his team's preseason game on Saturday night after suffering a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit. Johnston was going out to catch a pass in the first quarter when the Rams' Tanner Ingle hit him underneath his facemask and knocked him to the ground. The receiver also slammed his head onto the turf as he fell, and appeared to display the 'fencing' concussion response as he briefly held his arms up. Johnston laid on his back for several moments before being attended to by trainers and ultimately being helped to his feet. He was then carted to the locker room, and could be seen holding his head on the sideline. More to follow Quentin Johnston took a huge hit on a deep ball. Johnston in the fencing position, out cold. Chargers WR Quentin Johnston exits game after brutal hit to helmet

The Los Angeles Chargers are holding their breath on wide receiver Quentin Johnston. The former first-round pick exited a preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams after taking a hard hit to the helmet from Rams safety Tanner Ingle. No flag was called on the play, which was the Chargers offense's third play of the game. The hit left Johnston on the field in an apparent fencing response. After receiving some attention from trainers, Johnston was able to stand up on his own and walk to the cart, which took him back to the locker room, likely for further testing. The 23-year-old Johnston is coming off an encouraging sophomore season in which he posted 55 receptions, 711 receiving yards and eight touchdowns for a new-look Chargers offense. If healthy, he is expected to once again play a key role in the team's passing attack alongside Ladd McConkey, the returning Keenan Allen and second-round rookie Tre Harris.

Chargers WR Quentin Johnston leaves field on cart after big hit on 3rd snap vs Rams

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers receiver Quentin Johnston left the SoFi Stadium field on a cart after taking a big hit on the third play of a preseason game Saturday. Johnston was injured during the opening series of the Chargers' game against the Los Angeles Rams. He was running a deep route down the Rams' sideline for a pass from Justin Herbert when he was hit by Rams safety Tanner Ingle. Johnston landed flat on his back with both arms outstretched, staying motionless for several moments. The Rams' medical staff rushed to him first and immediately signaled for help. Players from both teams knelt while medical personnel tended to Johnston, the Chargers' first-round pick out of TCU in 2023. But Johnston eventually moved his arms and legs and sat up before standing under his own power and walking to the cart that took him off the field. Johnston had 55 catches for 711 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He is expected to start for the Chargers this season. ___ AP NFL:
