Style Gallery: Will The BET Awards Dress Code Bring The Drama We're Hoping For? We Hope So

Source: Aaron J. Thornton / Getty Black tie, but make it culture. The 2025 BET Awards are about to be a fashion movie. For the first time, the BET Awards is setting the tone. Tomorrow, June 9, the network celebrates 25 years of culture-shifting moments with a formal black tie dress code. And if you know anything about the culture, we love to put that ish on. What better way to do it than with a fabulous formal theme? BET's 2025 Awards Show Dress Code Has Entered The Chat & It's Black Tie This year's awards show is shaping up to be more than just a celebration of music, film, and television. It's also a tribute to legacy, style, and the artistry of Black designers. BET has tapped Harlem's Fashion Row to help bring the fashion vision to life. BET and HFR are pairing this year's Best New Artist nominees with Black designers Richfresh, Megan Renee, LaTouche, and Rey Ortiz Jaiteh. That means custom looks, personal storytelling through fabric, and runway-ready moments that will make us gag. When it comes to black tie on the BET carpet, we know it's going to be a moment. For the ladies, that means floor-length gowns with sculptural shapes, dramatic tulle, trains longer than CVS receipts, romantic draping, and body-hugging corsets. Look out for exaggerated sleeves, fabulous feathers, sequined pieces, and silver, bronze, and gilded gold metallics. Also, don't be surprised if we see sheer moments, glamorous grills, and lace looks. For the men, expect tailored suits reimagined. We want to see double-breasted, sleeveless, monochrome, velvet, brocade, and suits dripping in details. Embellished lapels, brooches, and designer loafers can take suits to the next level. Chains over blazers? Of course. Luxe textures? Absolutely. The red carpet should perfectly mix personal style and formal glam. And whether it's Law Roach giving a glam breakdown or Teyana Taylor turning heads on stage, fashion will be its headliner. The BET red carpet never misses. Before the 2025 style rolls in, we're looking back at some of the most iconic fashion moments in BET Awards history. Keep scrolling to see our gallery – and how celebs have already worn versions of black tie to the BET Awards. Style Gallery: Will The BET Awards Dress Code Bring The Drama We're Hoping For? Netflix fans urged to watch 'incredible' new movie with shock twist

Fans of Netflix have been urged to watch the thriller Straw following its recent addition to the streaming service. Written, directed and produced by Alex Cross star Tyler Perry, the film stars Taraji P. Henson as a single mother who becomes embroiled in a sequence of terrible and violent events as she struggles to care for her ill daughter. The film also stars Jingle All the Way actor and comedian Sinbad, and Precious actress Sherri Shepherd. Released on the streaming service on June 6, the film has already picked up traction among viewers, swiftly moving up the charts to become the platform's most streamed movie in the UK this weekend. Emerging to strong word of mouth from audiences, it has already been described as one of the director's best films to date (admittedly, this mixed-bag of a catalogue does include his Madea and Mrs. Brown's Boys crossover). Viewers were particularly vocal about its 'heartbreaking' ending – which featured a twist to the tale which will ensure Straw won't be forgotten in a hurry. After watching, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on what they had just witnessed. 'Straw is such a humbling movie. The rawness was so real and the plot twist was crazy,' wrote she_mego on X. 'What a walk through emotions @tylerperry's STRAW. The plot twist at the end wallowed me up. A good watch indeed!' exclaimed sandra_buma. 'After watching Straw, I no longer know how my heart is feeling. When what gave you purpose is suddenly gone. It speaks to a pain that's hard to name. Raw, emotional, and deeply human. Kudos to the writer… truly outdone🖤' said david_harris_r. 'Tyler Perrys STRAW absolutely incredible i literally cried blown away!' said MelisaWhiskey. From its reviews, critics heaped praise upon star Taraji, with Screen Rant describing her performance as 'an acting masterclass.' 'Straw has a cultural pulse-taking urgency that lifts it above [Tyler Perry's] usual run of comedies and melodramatic potboilers, flawed as it is,' wrote Dennis Harvey of Variety. Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly described the film's emotions as 'so raw and the performances are so earnest that you've really got to have a heart of stone not to care for these people.' Award-winning Taraji – nominated Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at 2008's Oscars – previously starred in hit movies The Color Purple and Hidden Figures. Her performance in the film comes two years after she spoke out on the issue of inequality in pay for Hollywood's women of colour. 'I'm just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do, getting paid a fraction of the cost,' she told Gayle King on SiriusXM Radio. 'I'm tired of hearing my sisters saying the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, 'You work a lot.' I have to – the math ain't mathing. 'And when you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don't do this alone. The fact that we're up here, there's a whole entire team behind us. They have to get paid. 'When you hear people saying, 'Oh, such and such made $10million.' That didn't make it to their account. Know that off the top, Uncle Sam is getting 50%. Do the math. 'Now we have $5million – your team is getting 30% off of what you gross, not after what Uncle Sam took. Now do the math.' As the interview went viral, fans and peers in the acting community shared messages of support. 'Not a damn lie told. Not. A. Damn. Lie. We go TO BAT for the next generation and hell even our own generation and above,' wrote Gabrielle Union in response. More Trending 'We don't hesitate to be the change that we all need to see AND it takes a toll on your mind, health, soul, and career if we're keepn it [100]. [Love] u @tarajiphenson. [sic]' 'We feel you, @tarajiphenson and we love you. It's a fight we ALL are waging,' agreed Community star Yvette Nicole Brown. 'For ourselves and for the ones coming up after us. This mess sucks!' Taraji P. Henson Talks New Ventures After Hollywood Treatment

Back in 2023, Taraji P. Henson memorably broke down in tears as she opened up about constantly fighting for equal pay in Hollywood. 'I'm just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do, [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,' she said as she opened up about her treatment in Hollywood as a Black woman. 'I'm tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired.' Fast forward to today, and Taraji has opened up about the subject again during a recent talk at the Kering Women in Motion event at Cannes. After revealing that she recently took a month off of acting and relocated to Bali, Taraji recalled feeling 'discouraged' by her treatment in Hollywood. 'I was just frustrated and it was making me bitter, and I'm not a bitter person,' she said, per Variety. 'I made a promise to myself that if I ever got there, it's time to walk away. I'm not serving myself or the audience or the characters I play. Thank God I did that. I came back refreshed and with a new perspective.' Taraji went on to note that she'd spent years being 'graceful in getting paid less than.' 'Not anymore though!' she said, adding that when she returned from Bali, she focused on non-acting ventures — like her hair care brand, TPH — instead of 'relying on that check from Hollywood.' Good for you, Taraji! You can catch her in the upcoming Netflix drama film Straw, which comes out on June 6.

Taraji P. Henson's Met Gala outfit represented the personal 'transformation' she has gone through

Taraji P. Henson's Met Gala outfit represented the personal "transformation" she has gone through. The 54-year-old actress opted for an off-white custom Monse x Post-Imperial dress that consisted of a cropped blazer over the top of a minidress for the biggest night in fashion on Monday (05.05.25) and made sure to "pay homage" to women from the ethnic group based across parts of West Africa. She told 'Entertainment Tonight': "This is paying homage to the Yoruba culture and the women who paid honours to a deity. They wore white because it represented transformation and spirituality. I think that's where I am right now, because I'm at peace. " The 'What Men Want' star noted that she has "fought hard" for the type of life she has now and struggles to explain it in any great detail, but just has an "overwhelming feeling of peace" at the moment. "I have fought for the peace that I've found now, I feel like I'm in a transformation from the old me to the new me. I can't explain it. It's just an overwhelming feeling of peace." Meanwhile, Taraji sported braces across her teeth to attend the event and noted that she has "got used" to the feeling of them but couldn't wait to take them ut so she could go home and enjoy some pizza. She added: "You get used to it, you have to take them out to eat though! As soon as I leave here, I'm gonna get a pizza!" Last year, the Hollywood star noted whilst attending the BET Awards that "representation and recognition is vital" in the fashion world and she wanted to celebrate her heritage in a way that today's designers "deserve". She said: "Representation and recognition is vital. The BET Awards is our night, and talented black designers deserve the opportunity to have the visibility and platform they deserve. It's all about celebrating our heritage, our creativity and our unique perspectives through the art of fashion"
