Under Armour makes a drastic change to take on Lululemon
It may not seem like it, but if you squint hard enough, there are still glimmers of hope to be found in the retail industry. In some cases, entire brands are flying high. Related: Home Depot local rival closing permanently after 120 years This is certainly the case if you bought Lululemon (LULU) before the pandemic. Either the stock or the leggings. If you bought the leggings before the pandemic, the purchase likely set you back around $100. But the pants are meant to last, and you've probably spent quite a bit of time lounging or exercising in them over the past few years. It might even be safe to assume you're happy with your purchase. And if you bought Lululemon stock before the pandemic, it's probably safe to assume you're even happier. For years, analysts have been saying Lululemon is either the best buy in retail or too rich for value investors. It depends on how you look at it, but the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Lululemon is up over 17% since the onset of Covid. This is a decent return. But if you compare it to some of the other so-called darlings of the pandemic, like Moderna, Pfizer, Peloton, or Chewy, Lulu would've been the safest bet by a country mile. If Lululemon isn't your thing, there are plenty of other companies to consider, whether you're looking to bet on the future or bet on your closet. Under Armour (UAA) , the Maryland-based fitness apparel brand, has struggled for years under the heavy burden of excess inventory and never-ending promotions. More Retail: Home Depot makes drastic budget-friendly move to take on Lowe'sStruggling cosmetics brand sounds alarm, laying off thousandsPopular Trader Joe's wine brand has bad news, making harsh choiceStruggling retail chain sounds the alarm on growing problem As a result, the brand had something of an identity crisis in the late 2010s and early 2020s, while other high-flying brands like Lululemon, Nike, and newcomers such as Alo Yoga and Vuori ramped up competition. After consecutive quarters of declining sales (and negative e-commerce growth), Under Armour was no longer considered a premium brand. But neither did it offer customers a value proposition that others do, like the Target-owned brand Up & Up. So it's been quietly embarking on something of a turnaround plan. One of the central approaches Under Armour has been taking to revamp business is to reduce its SKU count. This means it's been painstakingly culling all of its inventory and getting rid of less-popular or repetitive items that no longer accelerate underlying brand value. Under CEO Kevin Plank, Under Armour has reduced its total SKU count by one quarter. Related: Bankrupt department store unexpectedly receives a savior And as it trims its offerings, it's replacing some products with pricier ones, which it hopes will give the brand a more premium feel. For example, it's now selling a new, streamlined-looking backpack for $140. Lululemon sells a similar-looking bag for $98. The new strategy comes at a cost; Under Armour has spent a massive $89 million trying to right the ship. "Our priorities are clear: win in men's apparel, unlock the full potential of footwear and strengthen our connection with women, starting with trusted essentials like bras and bottoms and then building from there to grow her affinity for Under Armour," CEO Kevin Plank said on the Q4 earnings call. Target makes bold move to answer Walmart, Amazon
Over the last few years, Amazon (AMZN) and Walmart (WMT) have been the leaders in the delivery sector, offering multiple options for consumers to receive their packages more efficiently and faster than all others. Both retail giants have leveraged their delivery memberships and services to boost growth and become lucrative companies, especially in matters of same-day and next-day delivery, with Amazon's Prime subscription and Walmart's Walmart+ membership. Don't miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet's FREE Daily newsletter Although Target is also considered a retail giant, the company has yet to reach the same level as its strong rivals. It has fallen behind over the last few quarters, reporting multiple declines and slowdowns in its business. Related: Target announces expansion in new area parents will love To compete with its rivals, Target announced in 2023 that it would invest $100 million to expand its next-day delivery capabilities to make faster deliveries across more locations and build upon its Stores-as-Hubs strategy. This growth-focused strategy aims to enhance customers' in-store experience and leverage stores as fulfillment hubs at reduced costs. However, only a year later, Target's annual revenue fell for the first time last year since 2016. This hard blow caused the company to plot a new strategy to take down its competition. Target (TGT) revealed it has been testing different ways to leverage its Shipt capabilities to enable faster store-to-guest deliveries in areas without a sortation center nearby. It is doing so by enabling drivers to strategically pick up orders directly from Target's physical stores and deliver them directly to customers. Shipt is a Target-owned delivery service platform that currently powers the retailer's same-day delivery. This membership-based service allows customers to order groceries and other essentials and have them delivered by local Shipt drivers so they can receive their items on the same day the order was placed. Related: Forget McDonald's, Walmart adds a new restaurant partner Over the last year, Target saw an increase of over 30% in packages delivered by Shipt drivers from sortation centers, which boosted the number of packages delivered at a lower cost. No specific participant locations have been disclosed. However, despite this test being in its infancy stage, the strategy seems to work since early results are already positive. "While we're in the early stages of expanding this test to more markets, we're very encouraged by the early results as it's making us faster and more cost-efficient," said Target CEO Michael Fiddleke. Target's speed-focused efforts build on its stores-as-hubs strategy, where local stores are used to fulfill customers' orders. The goal is to increase shipping speed and efficiency, which will subsequently cause a rise in sales. They just ain't cut from the same cloth as this microfiber pack that offers three textures and extra durability. Target 15. That's what we call a doubly efficient product. Target 16. A pack of botanical mint dog grooming wipes for dirty paws and dirty coats as spring finally (finally!!) comes into view. I've gotten so many compliments on it!" — Momx2 19. And a small snack bento food storage container for keeping the contents inside your lunch pack stored and tidy! This container, with four compartments, is even microwave- and freezer safe. The more snacks the merrier, we always say. Target Promising review: " I love all the Figmint food storage containers! I think they are high quality. I use them a lot for lunches and food storage. I like the bento snack box because I can put different snacks in there. I can use it for my kids lunches. I bought two, but I'm about to buy four more!!" — Monetlelia 20. A classic long-sleeve, oversize button-down shirt that will become your new wardrobe staple. You can dress it up for an office profesh look or toss it over a bikini as a beach cover-up. The options are endless.
