Japan, OIC discuss Afghan humanitarian cooperation
JEDDAH: Leading officials from Japan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held talks here Wednesday on bolstering joint humanitarian programs in Afghanistan. The OIC officials included Tarig Ali Bakheet, assistant secretary-general for humanitarian, social and cultural Affairs, and special envoy of the OIC secretary-general for Afghanistan. The Japanese delegation included Masayuki Kameda, principal deputy director of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Daisuke Yamamoto, the consul general in Jeddah.

IOM, OIC sign MoU Supporting Islamic Philanthropy Fund
Mohamed Mandour The Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and his accompanying delegation participated in the Islamic Philanthropy Fund (IPF) launch event organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at the United Nations House in Riyadh. This important event featured a panel discussion during which, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs pointed out the significant role Islamic Philanthropy can play in mobilizing additional resources to help Institutions to better address the needs of displaced persons, refugees, and migrants. Representatives of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) also spoke at the panel. The launch event was also marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the OIC and IOM on the OIC's support for the IOM's Islamic Philanthropy Fund. The MoU was signed by Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, ASG for Humanitarian Affairs of the OIC, and Mr. Mohammed Abdiker, Chief of Staff of the Director-General of IOM.

OIC, NRC Sign Memorandum of Understanding
Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and Mr. Nathan Carey, Global Advocacy Lead Partnerships and Policy at the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the OIC and NRC, to establish and conduct cooperation in areas such as Humanitarian Diplomacy, advocacy, and provision of humanitarian assistance to refugees in the OIC Member States. The signing of the MoU, which is the culmination of consultations and negotiations started earlier this year, took place on the sidelines of the 4th edition of the Riyadh Humanitarian Forum.

OIC participates at Riyadh Humanitarian Forum
Mohamed Mandour As part of his activities at the Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum, Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the OIC, participated as a speaker in the high-level discussion panel held on the topic 'Addressing displacement in an era of increasing conflicts and humanitarian crises'. In his intervention, Ambassador Tarig recalled the importance the OIC attaches to the protection and assistance to displaced persons in its Member States affected by humanitarian crises and conflicts. Then, he advocated the need to recourse to the alternative methods and innovative ways of financing humanitarian aid, which generate substantial additional resources that can be used to implement crisis prevention and impact mitigation programs. According to him, those alternative mechanisms include the Islamic philanthropy tools such as zakat, sadaqah, and waqf. Finally, he underscored the necessity to reinforce partnerships between the humanitarian donors and promote 'localization' approach to build resilience and ensure an efficient delivery of humanitarian assistance to displaced persons. It is worth mentioning that the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs was joined in the panel by Amy Pope, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Kelly T. Clements, UN Deputy High-Commissioner for Refugees, Muhannad Hadi, UN Assistant Secretary-General, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle-East Peace Process, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, and the Designated Official for the UN Security in Palestine, Pramila Patten, UN SG Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Dr. Michael Kohler, Former DG of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Moderator of the panel.
