Disgraced footy star Tarryn Thomas hits more trouble as he tries to get back on the field after being sacked over his treatment of women
Former North Melbourne star Tarryn Thomas has had another door closed in his face after a Melbourne-based footy club declined to offer him the chance to join their list. The 25-year-old is looking to revive his footy career, but since being given the green light to return to play for a non-AFL affiliated club in February, he has now been turned down by three different community football teams. Thomastown, who play in Melbourne's suburban league, are the latest to snub the footy star, after The Northern Football Netball League had held a remarkable board meeting to assess whether the midfielder should be allowed to join Thomastown, according to The Herald Sun. The ex-Kangaroos star is understood to have been doing some training at the footy club in recent months and held an interest in joining the team's roster. In order to add him to their playing cohort, Thomastown required approval from the league's board. But after a 45-minute meeting, the board of The Northern Football Netball League intervened and declined his registration. The 25-year-old is looking to revive his footy career, but since being given the green light to return to play for a non-AFL affiliated club, he has been turned down by three teams 'The Northern Football Netball League directors met to consider an application from the Thomastown Football Club for the registration of Tarryn Thomas,' CEO Martin Stillman said. 'After considering all aspects related to this application, the board unanimously decided to decline Thomastown's request to register Tarryn Thomas for the 2025 season.' On May 4, Thomastown are understood to have told the league that it had accepted its decision. The footy player has been unable to play football at any level after the AFL's integrity unit found last year that he had engaged in multiple acts of misconduct. Those had included threatening a woman via a direct message. He was subsequently sacked by North Melbourne in February 2024. Earlier this year, Thomas had arrived in Perth to begin a two-week trial with WAFL club, Swan Districts. The Western Australian outfit subsequently announced that they would not be pushing forward with their attempts to sign the ex-North star, after multiple members of the club's women's players had spoken of their disapproval at the move. According to NewsCorp, some had claimed they would leave the footy club should the Swans sign Thomas. The club's CEO, Jeff Dennis, insisted that the decision was made independently of the WA Football Commission and AFL. The Northern Bullants had also decided against adding Thomas to their list after facing large backlash over a proposed move. The Herald Sun adds that the Northern Football Netball League were 'concerned about the ramifications for the competition and club' if Thomas was to sign for Thomastown. Club president Rob Mazniovski revealed that the former North Melbourne star had spent a lot of time around the club in the past year, adding the 25-year-old was disappointed by the decision. 'Naturally. I just think he wants to play the sport again,' he said. 'We have to respect the league's findings. 'Tarryn will no doubt continue to be at our club watching from afar at some level, for the rest of the year, I'd say. We're a community club built on fairness, inclusion and opportunity. 'That's what we have to provide to everyone. We don't judge people on past mistakes.' 'He's been nothing but respectful with everyone he's crossed paths with,' he said. 'We know Tarryn has obviously made some mistakes in the past – as a young man he's made mistakes – and it's cost him his AFL career and we're just trying to provide a platform at a local community club where he can hopefully get back involved in the sport in some way, shape or form in the future.' Thomas, who hails from New South Wales, penned a deal to join North after being snapped up by the Roos as pick No 8 of the 2018 National Draft. He'd debut the following year in round two of the AFL season, a 21-point defeat by Brisbane at the Marvel Stadium, before going on to return 56 goals across 69 appearances for the Kangaroos.

AFL 2025: North Melbourne has thrown hand to embattled former player Tarryn Thomas
North Melbourne has reached out to embattled former player Tarryn Thomas after his latest brushes with trouble. Thomas, who was banned from the AFL for his off-field behaviour, has had a tumultuous 12 months and was last week entangled in a pair of incidents. It was first reported Thomas was involved in a 'hostage drama' in a botched car deal in Ballarat before he was then allegedly set to be charged with possession of drugs in Melbourne's CBD. Thomas, 25, was taken at pick No. 8 by the Roos in 2018 and played 69 games at AFL level. His former coach, Alastair Clarkson, said the Kangaroos had reached out to Thomas and hoped he found 'a pathway forward'. 'Perhaps that's a question more so for the AFL then it is perhaps for us, we don't know the depth of what has transpired,' Clarkson said. Tarryn Thomas trained with Swan Districts earlier this year. Picture: Philip Gostelow 'There's a lot of people at this footy club that still care for his welfare and what's going on in his life – our club has reached out to him 'I am sure the AFLPA and the AFL are concerned for anyone who has played the game and the mistakes young men make along the journey and how can they rectify themselves, get on with their lives again. 'I am sure it's a concern for our club, a concern for the AFLPA and concern for the AFL and obviously a concern for Tarryn and his network of people supporting him. 'What we're hoping is through all that support he can find a pathway forward that allows him to get back on track with his life but also somewhere in the future get the opportunity to play footy again.' Thomas was deemed eligible to play state-league football for stand-alone clubs this season but was knocked back by all seven Victorian clubs. He then travelled to Perth and trained with WAFL club Swan Districts but the Swans too opted against fielding the former top draft pick. 'This process has uncovered many deep concerns and personal experiences,' Swan Districts chief executive Jeff Dennis said at the time. 'It's highlighted domestic violence has affected many people in our Swans family and shown us that we're just not ready for this.'
