Challengers had a US man winning the French Open. Reality is very different
The most shocking moment of the 2024 psychosexual tennis film Challengers is not the traumatic knee injury, any frame from the quasi-sex scenes, or the passionate rally with which the movie concludes. It's the reveal that one of the characters, American ATP tennis player Art Donaldson, has won the French Open twice, a stat so foreign to US men we must have a sequel simply for Donaldson to explain how he found success on clay. No American man has lifted the trophy – or even made the semi-finals – on the Parisian clay courts since Andre Agassi did so in 1999. And at the time of Challengers' release, no American man had made the quarter-finals since (bet you won't guess this one) Agassi in 2003. American women have a storied history on clay – Chris Evert's seven Roland-Garros titles and 125-match winning streak on the surface are legend; Serena Williams won Roland-Garros three times; Coco Gauff goes deep there every year and is back in the semi-finals this time – but the men, outside a brief burst in the 1980s and 1990s, have had little luck in the Open era. The 21st-century union between American men and Parisian clay courts is, somehow, more distant and fraught than Art's relationship with his wife, Tashi, in Challengers. The former of those relationships may be getting a tad more affectionate though. At Roland-Garros this year, Americans Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe broke the 22-year quarter-final drought. Tiafoe, previously an unaccomplished clay player, dialed in his whipped forehand and bunted backhand and didn't drop a set en route to the last eight. Paul scrapped to get there, gritting out a comeback from two sets down against the musclebound Marton Fucsovics and a marathon against Karen Khachanov despite a lower ab injury and a relative lack of raw pace on his shots. A smattering of other Americans fell short of the quarter-finals, but impressed nonetheless: Ben Shelton pushed defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to a tight four sets, unheralded Ethan Quinn made the third round. So no Art Donaldson heroics here, but certainly reason for optimism. The question is how much. The American men's runs ended abruptly and with little struggle. Paul's physical issues intensified, making him ideal prey that Alcaraz feasted ravenously on in the quarter-finals: 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. And Tiafoe lost in four sets to Lorenzo Musetti, a clay-courter by trade, accounting for himself well until 5-5 in a decisive third set before losing eight of the final 10 games. The matches outlined the highest standard of play on the slow, shifting clay surface. 'Tiafoe ran up against somebody who really is a clay-courter,' Steve Tignor, a longtime senior writer for said on Tuesday. 'He hadn't lost a set, but I don't know if he'd played anybody who was a really top-tier clay-court guy, who could really make him hit a lot of balls.' We spoke before Alcaraz-Paul, but asked about Paul's potential to win the match, Tignor said, 'I don't really give him too serious a chance.' In an early rally against Alcaraz, Paul got off some of his best groundstrokes, steadily pushing Alcaraz from side to side while improving his own court position. But on the run, from miles beyond the baseline, Alcaraz suddenly uncorked a forehand down the line that blazed past Paul. The shot signified the tennis gods' uneven distribution of gifts. Such power, so far outside Paul's capabilities and so comfortably within Alcaraz's, cannot be acquired or taught, only identified and honed. Even if Tiafoe or Paul had made the final, world No 1 Jannik Sinner most likely would have been waiting. Sinner hits heavy and hard with no cost to accuracy, a living nightmare of an opponent. 'Sinner already seems like a guy, maybe even more than Alcaraz, who's just going to stand in the way of the Americans,' Tignor said. 'I imagine if any of the Americans had come up against him [at Roland-Garros], they would have lost.' In April, Tiafoe told Reem Abulleil that tennis is more open since the end of the Big Three era: 'Anybody can win slams.' In the wake of the retirements of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, plus Novak Djokovic finally showing signs of slowing down, this figured to be an accurate take on the new tennis world order. Empirical evidence so far suggests otherwise. Sinner and Alcaraz have shared the last five major titles and are in their early 20s. They look intent on spending the next decade gradually proving Tiafoe's quote wrong. Paul and Tiafoe performed as well as can be expected at Roland-Garros. So what's the future for the American men on clay, this surface once more ruled by generational talents? There seems to be no room for mere mortals, but that's hardly the mortals' fault. They'll keep trying, keep improving, and perhaps eventually this country of 340 million will once again produce a men's Roland-Garros champion. Until then, American fans can best do justice to their rooting interests by respecting the enormity of the task.

Climber Scales Mount Everest Four Times In 15 Days
An astonishing world record was set earlier this month in Nepal after a climber named Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa climbed to the summit of Mount Everest a record-breaking four times in just fifteen days, accomplishing a feet of physical and mental endurance unparalleled in the history of mountaineering. It would be difficult to overstate just how impressive Sherpa's feat was. Ascending 29,032 feet to the height of the towering mountain, where the oxygen is gaspingly thin and the weather perilously treacherous is, for many, the highlight of their climbing lives. To go up and down repeatedly, allowing one's body to adjust to the difference in oxygen at various levels, is almost incomprehensible. Yet the 29-year-old, who hails from a small Nepali town called Phortse, managed to achieve what seemed unachievable. Tashi started working as a climbing guide in 2017. Two years later, in 2019, he ascended to Everest's summit for the first time. In the years since, he reached the peak four times: three from the Nepal side, and once from the Tibetan side. This year, things were different. His first ascent occurred on May 9, when he was part of a rope-fixing team laying the route for the 8K Expedition. After that, Tashi quickly went up a second time (in reflecting, he told reporters that the second climb was the easiest). Finally, after ascending a third time while assisting a client, Tashi quickly scaled the mountain solo for his fourth climb. As he later recounted, "I made to the top of Everest along with my client. I brought him back safely to the Everest Base Camp and then immediately started for my fourth summit the same night. My fourth summit attempt started from Base Camp on 22 May with an aim to reach the summit on May 23, and I was alone during my final push to the summit. There were no fellow Sherpas along with me. I carried all the required oxygen and necessities. I started for the summit on 8:00 pm (local time) on 22 May from Camp IV." Tashi's remarkable achievement comes during a time of many record-breaking feats on Everest. Last season, a climber named Dawa Phinjhok Sherpa achieved the summit three times in just eight days, and photojournalist Purnima Shrestha made headlines for achieving the summit three times during the season. 'Tashi represents a new generation of Sherpa climbers—guides, record-breakers, storytellers, and trailblazers,' says mountaineering expert Ang Tshiring Sherpa. 'They are climbing in the era of technological advancement. The world is now connected through smart devices, which, among other things, has even made Everest climbs faster.' Nepal is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks and welcomes hundreds of climbers each spring, when temperatures are warmer and winds are typically calmer.

Sikkim—The floral paradise of India
Mondreeta is a national-level swimmer and a world-record-holding mountaineer. Currently, as Vice President of TOGA, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India, she serves as an Indian Ambassador to foreign delegates. LESS ... MORE During my mountaineering course, I had visited Sikkim, but only to traverse the trail leading to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Even then, I was captivated by its ethereal beauty and vowed to return. My next opportunity arrived when I drove from New Jalpaiguri to Gangtok, the vibrant capital of East Sikkim. Sikkim is a land divided into four distinct zones—North, South, East, and West—each offering its own breathtaking landscapes and experiences. The drive to Gangtok was enchanting, winding alongside the Teesta River through dense pine and bamboo forests. I stationed myself in a hotel on MG Road, the picturesque Mall Road, which is a pedestrian-only promenade lined with chic shops, cosy cafés, luxurious hotels, and, most importantly, panoramic views of the majestic Himalayas. Sikkim struck me as the cleanest, most meticulously maintained state I had ever visited. Upon my arrival, the hotel manager informed me that the International Flower Festival was underway. Intrigued, I decided to visit. To my astonishment, the festival sprawled across vast acres, with an overwhelming array of plants and flowers—some planted in the earth, others showcased in pots. The sheer diversity was staggering: over 30 types of rhododendrons, 600 varieties of orchids, 150 kinds of gladioli, and much more. Sikkim boasts over 5,000 species of flowering plants, 515 rare orchids, 60 primula species, 36 rhododendron species, 11 oak varieties, 23 bamboo species, 16 conifer species, and 362 varieties of ferns. Participants from countries as far as the USA, UK, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, Spain, Canada, Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland had converged to celebrate this floral extravaganza. The valley resembled a garden from paradise—an otherworldly vision that compelled me to spend the entire day soaking in nature's vibrant artistry, attempting to capture its splendour through my camera lens. Gangtok: Gateway to Sikkim's spiritual and scenic wonders Over the next couple of days, I explored Gangtok's rich cultural and natural heritage. I visited the Rumtek Monastery, renowned for its stunning architecture, and the Enchey Monastery, a spiritual haven. From Tashi's Viewpoint, I took in the panoramic vista of the Himalayas, including the towering Kanchenjunga. The tranquil Tsomgo Lake, a glacial gem nestled at a high altitude, shimmered like a celestial mirror. A special permit granted me access to Nathula Pass, a historic trade route now famed for its breathtaking views and the revered Baba Mandir, dedicated to a Sikh soldier who is regarded as a divine guardian of the region. North Sikkim: The road to heaven on earth Next, I ventured to North Sikkim, a region where the landscape grows increasingly rugged and otherworldly. I set off for Lachen, a quaint mountain town at 8,300 feet, a 4.5-hour drive from Gangtok. The temperature dipped to a chilling 5–6°C at night. Early the next morning, I began the journey to the legendary Gurudongmar Lake, 64 km away, passing through Lachung and the Yumthang Valley of Flowers—the ultimate floral sanctuary of Sikkim. As the ascent steepened, the lush green forest gradually gave way to dense thickets of rhododendrons. Suddenly, the greenery vanished, and the landscape exploded into a kaleidoscope of colours. Giant clusters of primulas, poppies, irises, and other blossoms blanketed the slopes, transforming the valley into a mesmerising sea of flowers. The scene was surreal, as if a celestial artist had scattered rainbow hues across the earth. Upon reaching the valley, the panoramic vista of floral meadows took my breath away. A tributary of the Teesta River meandered along the valley's edge, adding a melodic murmur to the spectacle. I walked to the river, crossed over to the hot spring on the other side, and indulged in a rejuvenating mineral bath—an invigorating balm against the mountain chill. The drive from Yumthang Valley to Gurudongmar Lake was a heart-thumping adventure, as the road clung to the edge of snow-capped peaks. Upon arrival, I was greeted by warm-hearted soldiers who welcomed me with hot tea. Encircled by towering snow peaks, Gurudongmar Lake gleamed like a colossal mirror, its still waters reflecting the cloud-draped mountains. Colourful Tibetan prayer flags fluttered around the lake, infusing the air with a sense of reverence and tranquillity. To the left of the lake, a small stream cascaded forth—the nascent Teesta River, the lifeline of Sikkim. On the return journey, I chose to halt at Lachung instead of Lachen. West Sikkim: A tapestry of monasteries and waterfalls From North Sikkim, I made my way to West Sikkim, descending to Pelling, a serene hamlet nestled at the foothills of Kanchenjunga. I stayed at a hotel on Pelling's helipad, an ideal vantage point to gaze at the snow-clad peaks. My exploration commenced with the 17th-century Sanga Choling Monastery, offering panoramic views of the mountains, followed by the Pemayangtse Monastery, adorned with exquisite walls and murals and a gold-plated statue of Guru Padmasambhava, my spiritual teacher. Beyond the monastery stood the ruins of the Rabdentse Palace, once a royal seat and now a poignant reminder of Sikkim's storied past. Other highlights included the Pelling Skywalk, India's first glass skywalk, and the spellbinding Kanchenjunga Falls. But the most spiritually uplifting experience was visiting the sacred Khecheopidi Lake, also known as the 'Wish-Fulfilling Lake.' According to legend, the goddess Tara meditated atop a mountain and stepped down, leaving an imprint of her left foot, which later filled with rainwater to form the lake. The right foot imprint, located 10 km away, also became a lake. Astonishingly, when viewed from above, Khecheopidi Lake resembles a perfect footprint. Its waters are impeccably clean, as birds dutifully pick up any fallen leaves, preserving its sanctity. Nearby, the Dudhsagar Waterfall cascades down the rocks in a frothy, milky torrent, adding yet another element of surreal beauty to the landscape. South Sikkim: The spiritual and scenic haven My final destination was South Sikkim. From Pelling, I drove to Ravangla, a picturesque town perched on a ridge. I spent a night at the Buddha Park, an oasis of lush gardens and tranquil pathways, leading up to a colossal bronze statue of Buddha. The next day, as I descended to Namchi, a breathtaking sight greeted me from afar—the world's tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava, standing at a staggering 135 feet atop Samdruptse Hill. White Tibetan prayer flags fluttered along the path, adding to the aura of serenity. In Namchi, I visited Char Dham, a spiritual complex atop Solophok Hill, featuring miniature replicas of India's four sacred pilgrimage sites—Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram—encircling a 108-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva with the Ganga cascading from his crown, surrounded by 12 Jyotirlingas. Sikkim: The eternal symphony of nature and culture Beyond the tourist spots, the very roads of Sikkim are a visual symphony—serpentine paths winding through dense forests, waterfalls tumbling down mossy cliffs, and verdant valleys cradling the Teesta River and its tributaries. The air is fragrant with the scent of blooming flowers, and the warmth of the Sikkimese people adds to the allure. The journey was flavoured by the region's delectable cuisine—steaming momos, hearty bowls of thukpa, tangy sisnoo soup, fermented gundruk, and rich chhurpi cheese—all savoured amid the backdrop of Sikkim's unmatched natural splendour. To this day, my Sikkim sojourn remains one of the most unforgettable chapters of my Himalayan odyssey—a floral paradise that truly felt like a slice of heaven on earth.
