Gang rivalry leads to twin murders in Kovilpatti, nine arrested

Tuticorin: Two murders, believed to be retaliatory in nature, took place within a span of 30 minutes on Sunday night in a shocking escalation of violence at Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district. The murders sent shockwaves in the region. According to police sources, A Pragadheeswaran, 20, of Valluvar Nagar, was hacked to death near a Tasmac shop on Kadalaiyur Road. He had reportedly engaged in a heated argument with a group of men before being brutally attacked. The assailants, believed to be from a rival faction, fled the scene immediately after the murder. Less than half an hour later, a gang believed to be aligned with Pragadheeswaran retaliated by storming the residence of B Kasthuri, 50, at Shenbaga Nagar in Pudhugramam, and hacked her to death. Kasthuri, who died on the spot, was the mother of B Sathish, 22—one of the alleged attackers involved in the earlier incident. Her brother, S Shenbagaraj, who attempted to intervene, sustained injuries in the attack and was admitted to Kovilpatti govt hospital. The Kovilpatti East police rushed to both crime scenes, recovered the bodies, and sent them for postmortem. As a precautionary measure, Pragadheeswaran's body was sent to Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital, while Kasthuri's was taken to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Preliminary investigations suggest that long-standing enmity between the two families led to the murders. Police revealed that Pragadheeswaran had a prior conflict with Sathish over damage to a wedding banner. On Sunday night, Sathish and his friends allegedly carried out the attack on Pragadheeswaran. In retaliation, Kasthuri was murdered at her home. Tuticorin superintendent of police, Albert John, confirmed that nine suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the double murder. "A force of 90 police under additional SP oversaw vulnerable areas. DSP Kovilpatti and team secured four accused within minutes of the incidents. This prevented murders from escalating into a law and order concern," he added. Further investigation is underway.

Tasmac's annual report not published for 8th year in a row

Chennai: Accounts and financial performance of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Ltd (Tasmac)will continue to be under wraps, as the state-owned liquor monopoly has not published its annual report for the eighth year now. The last annual report published on Tasmac's official website was its 34th report for the 2016-17 financial year. Under the Companies Act, every company should prepare an annual report, a comprehensive document that provides a detailed overview of its activities and financial performance for its stakeholders. Tasmac, being a state-owned company, is required to host its annual reports online and make them accessible to the public. For instance, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, another state-owned company, has published its annual report for 2023-24, but Tasmac remains an exception. It's annual report should contain details of the balance sheet, including assets, liabilities, equity, and income statements such as revenues, expenses, and profit and loss. An independent auditor's opinion on the accuracy and fairness of the financial statements is also part of the annual report. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Santo Antônio Do Descoberto: Quanto vale a sua casa? However, he said he would check why they were not made public. Tasmac officials were not available for comment. One of the key accusations against the Tasmac by the ED was the former's lopsided procurement favouring a few distilleries and breweries. In the annual report for 2016-17, the independent auditor's report highlighted that the company (Tasmac) needed to periodically review and strengthen the policies relating to purchases, procurements, and price fixation. It also recommended measures such as raising bills on the sale of goods immediately upon sale, periodic identification of sediment stock in respect of inventory at retail vending shops, and integration of software under various platforms. Eight years later, there is no clarity on the steps initiated on the recommendations in the absence of Tasmac's annual reports in the public forum.

ED may find more details if it grills Udhayanidhi's friends: TN BJP president on investigation into Tasmac scam

COIMBATORE: The BJP has been speaking about the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into the Tasmac scam many times, but now, the Supreme Court has imposed an interim stay on the ED's investigation, said BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore airport, Nagenthran said all parties must unite against the DMK government. 'The ED has said it will find out more details if it interrogates Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's friends Ritheesh and Akash. No one knows where they are. Furthermore, Udhayanidhi said he is not afraid of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ED. During the 2011 election, when the ED was searching upstairs, the alliance negotiations were ongoing downstairs. We do not know how the talks ended that day, perhaps out of fear of ED searches,' Nagenthran said, adding, 'What are Ritheesh and Akash fearing that they had to go abroad?' When asked about the Rajya Sabha elections, Nagenthran said the party leadership will take a decision. Further, he said he will urge the finance minister to relax the rules for gold loans. Nagenthran accused the DMK regime of causing difficulties to people. 'There have been property tax hikes and electricity tariff hikes. Smuggling of drugs and various other illegal activities have taken place excessively under this regime. Law and order situation has deteriorated. We urge all parties to unite against the DMK,' Nagenthran said. To a question on caste name being suffixed after Periyar's name in the UPSC paper, he said, 'No matter who they are, there is no need that there should be a caste after the name.'

DMK is scared of central agencies: Nainar Nagenthran

COIMBATORE: The DMK has been scared of the central agencies since 2011 though deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has claimed that they don't fear the Enforcement Directorate, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, Nainar said the DMK had to finalise seat-sharing talks with Congress under the threat of an ongoing search by a central agency. 'If the DMK is not afraid of an ED probe into the Tasmac scam, then Udhayanidhi should explain why two of his friends have fled abroad,' Nainar said. When asked if the BJP would seek a Rajya Sabha seat from the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, he said such decisions would be taken by the party national high command. The BJP MLAs would support the AIADMK in the Rajya Sabha elections, he said. On chief minister M K Stalin's New Delhi visit, Nainar said the CM would have explained the reason for his visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'We are not aware of what he spoke,' he said. He then appealed to all opposition parties to come together and oppose the DMK in the 2026 assembly elections.

No need for DMK to have secret relations with BJP: Sekarbabu

Trichy: , TNCC president Selvaperunthagai on Monday said the chief minister M K Stalin went to Delhi to fight for Tamil Nadu's rights. To the opposition claims that CM visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the NITI Aayog meeting prompted by 'fear' of ED raids, he said, "That is a misunderstanding. The BJP govt has consistently withheld funds, but this time it has completely withheld them. The chief minister went to fight for our rights. Placing conditions—such as mandatory acceptance of the National Education Policy (NEP)—and withholding funds if states refuse to comply, is an authoritarian way of functioning." TNN Chennai: HR & CE minister P K Sekarbabu on Monday came down hard on AIADMK general secretary Edapapdi K Palaniswami and TVK president Vijay for their criticism of chief minister M K Stalin's Delhi visit to participate in the Niti Aayog meeting. He told reporters here, "If our CM wants to oppose, he will oppose directly, and if he wants to support, he will do so. We are not scared and there is no need for DMK to have a secret relationship with BJP. " Making a veiled attack on actor and TVK founder Vijay, Sekarbabu said (in Tamil), "I need not respond to 'criticisms of mushrooms that sprouted in yesterday's rain'. Let them come to the field first. We are ready to fight those 100 times stronger than them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tukarkan Bitcoin dan Ethereum - Tanpa Dompet Diperlukan! These lies by opposition parties are like a sand fort built on the seashore that will be washed away. " TNN Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned chief minister M K Stalin if he managed to bring additional funds to Tamil Nadu because of his participation in Niti Aayog meeting. Earlier, Palaniswami said in a statement that Stalin's Delhi visit was a "mission failure". Addressing a public meeting at Moongilpadi in Kallakurichi on Monday, Palaniswami said when he met Union home minister Amit Shah in March this year, he submitted a memorandum listing out the issues needed to be addressed in Tamil Nadu. "I requested him to release funds for implementing MGNREGS in Tamil Nadu. Immediately, he released close to 3,000 crore. Has Stalin managed to bring funds like this to the state," he asked. Palaniswami said Stalin avoided speaking about such achievements of AIADMK even when the party was in opposition. "Instead, he repeatedly speaks about my meeting with Amit Shah after switching three cars. What is your problem in using multiple cars? I had to use the cars of other leaders such as Thambidurai. So, I had to change cars. I will even walk,'' Palaniswami said. On the Tasmac scam, Palaniswami said the DMK leadership was hiding behind the court stay. "Once the stay is lifted, many in DMK will be in the place where they ought to be,'' he said. Palaniswami said Stalin was scared of AIADMK's alliance with BJP as "such an alliance will bring out the corruption of DMK govt". He said, "Soon more parties will be joining our front." P alaniswami hoisted the party flag on a 126-foot-tall flagpole at Moongilpadi prior to the public meeting, claiming it to be the "tallest pole". In the statement, Palaniswami questioned the timing of Stalin's participation in Niti Aayog governing council annual sessions, after "a three-year boycott". He said, "People are asking whether the funds are for Tamil Nadu or for a family member. What is the real answer," he asked. On Stalin's accusations related to Palaniswami's relatives, the former chief minister said his relatives were engaged in business before their relationship to him and dismissed accusations regarding I-T searches on their properties. "It is a well-known fact that I had nothing to do with this. It is shameful to spread such false accusations without being able to confront me politically," the AIADMK leader said.
