Iran, China Launch New Commercial Railway
A new commercial rail route connecting China to Iran has officially launched with the arrival of the first cargo train from the eastern Chinese city of Xian at the Aprin dry port near Tehran. Aprin's CEO highlighted the port's strategic role in lowering transport costs and reducing reliance on coastal freight hubs. Railway infrastructure connecting Iran and China allows freight trains to travel from Shanghai to Tehran in 15 days, compared to 30 days via the maritime route. On May 12, railway officials from Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkiye met in Tehran to advance a transcontinental rail network linking Asia to Europe, Tasnim News Agency reported on May 25. The six nations agreed on competitive tariffs and operational standards to streamline regional rail services and boost trade connectivity. China and Iran have expanded trade and economic relations in recent years, as Tehran seeks to bypass US economic sanctions seeking to strangle its economy and oil exports. The rail line between the two countries enables Iranian oil exports to China and allows Chinese goods to reach Europe without US naval interference. In 2018, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated that Iran should look to the east rather than the west. Since that time, China has become Iran's largest oil purchaser, while Beijing has been able to supply Tehran with virtually all its needed manufactured goods, including electronics such as computers and cell phones. Iranian Parliament approves draft law on strategic treaty with Russia
Tehran - Saba: The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran (parliament) approved the "General Principles of the Draft Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Iran and the Russian Federation" on Wednesday. Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported that "this ratification was approved with 191 votes in favor, 8 against, and 2 abstentions, out of a total of 201 votes." Last April, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law ratifying the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran, according to a statement published on the official website of the Russian government's laws and decrees. According to the statement, "The agreement was signed on January 17, 2025, during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Moscow." According to the document, the two sides seek to deepen and expand relations in all areas of mutual interest, enhance cooperation in the field of security and defense, and closely coordinate activities at the regional and global levels, consistent with a long-term, comprehensive, and strategic partnership. According to the statement, "The two sides agreed that if one of the parties is subjected to aggression, the other party will not provide any assistance to the aggressor." The statement stated that "Russia and Iran will jointly contribute to promoting peace in the Caspian Sea region, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East." According to the agreement, "Russia and Iran may carry out joint investments in the economies of third countries, and they also support international Internet governance with equal rights for all states." I will lay this out, God willing, so that the Iranian people understand the other side's intentions.' His comments come as Noor News reported earlier on Tuesday that Iran has received a proposal to hold a fifth round of nuclear talks with the United States and is currently reviewing it, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. These developments reflect deep-seated mistrust and a lack of optimism in Tehran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving the stalled nuclear agreement.
