Opinion - Toxic online content is poisoning boys' minds — Congress must respond

While at a Nationals baseball game, I said hello to a congressman. He asked if I'd seen the Netflix show 'Adolescence.' A few days earlier, a woman at church asked me about the show. So, I watched it. It is hard to watch. 'Adolescence' tells the story of a nice-looking, middle-school English boy accused of murdering his classmate, a girl, after he and his friends swallow toxic, women-hating content available to them on the internet. This is far from a vampire movie. This is the story about real crime taking place in our homes. And our children are the victims. And America is watching. According to the Hollywood Reporter, ''Adolescence' debuted less than a month ago and already has more than 114 million views, Netflix says.' And if the people bringing the show to my attention are a fair representation, the series is triggering an important political conversation. But, again, I had a hard time watching it. And I am not alone. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) recently confessed that he couldn't get through the series, produced by Brad Pitt, because it was so disturbing. Scott Galloway, a New York University professor and podcaster, said he needed a drink to get through how the show reveals young men are rushing behind their mobile phones and computer screens to be fed porn, anger and fear about the world as a dark, hostile place. The boys are targeted for content designed to stir anxieties about their ability to attract a woman. And white males are specifically swamped with defeatist attitudes about their chances of getting into college while competing with increasing numbers of educated women, minorities and immigrants. The result is alienated and frustrated adolescent white teens, as well as lots of young males of color. The reality behind the show is evident for young Americans, according to a recent essay in the Wall Street Journal. A student at a Chicago Catholic high school wrote that his male classmates celebrated when social media titans accused of sex crimes and human trafficking – the brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were recently allowed into the U.S. 'As online influencers with millions of followers, the Tate brothers are notoriously misogynistic and extravagantly wealthy,' wrote Eli Thompson, the high school senior. 'Alpha dogs who are buff, rich and domineering, they promote a model of manhood that feels both backward and reassuring. If we follow their sexist, racist lead, they promise, we'll be alphas too.' Andrew Tate is even mentioned in 'Adolescence.' The police inspector investigating a teen girl's murder is told by his own son about a school subculture of boys who are drawn to the Tates' bullying online content. He explains to the cop, his dad, that 'incels,' short for 'involuntarily celibate,' identify with and find common cause with the Tates' disregard for women. The teen informs his father that the only way to solve the murder is by going online. The answer to who killed the girl is right there in the constant chatter among young men about girls being cruel critics, ready to dismiss them as failing to qualify for the supposed 20 percent of attractive men. That crazy message fits with right-wing U.S. politics, as described in the high school student's essay. Thompson writes that 'figures like the Tates, Elon Musk, and President Trump step in with bold answers: Don't worry, just dominate. Trump's brashness mirrors what many of the teenage boys I know crave — unapologetic power.' That points to Trump's strong base of support among young men in the 2024 election. Trump's macho man persona is a feature of his celebrity. 'It's A Man's World' was the walk-up music when Trump took the stage for campaign rallies. He made his attendance at Ultimate Fighting Championships into rallies. His home-stretch campaign sweep of 'manosphere' podcasts included interviews with Joe Rogan, Theo Von and Logan Paul. Professor Galloway argues that young males 'don't feel seen by the Democratic Party … If you go onto the DNC website, it explicitly says: 'who we serve' … [listing] 16 demographic groups from Asian Pacific Islanders to veterans to the disabled … but it doesn't mention anywhere young men … Young men are four times as likely to kill themselves as women, three times as likely to be addicted as women, and 12 times more likely to be incarcerated.' His point is that toxic internet content is not regulated. Yes, Congress acted against TikTok. But that was only due to the high risk that it is a front for Chinese snooping on Americans. Instagram, Meta, Apple, Google and other platforms are allowed to use their algorithms on children without any intervention by Congress. The urgent political message from 'Adolescence' really is for Democrats. If they are to win elections going forward, they have to learn how to reach young men who feel overlooked, disempowered and angry. As a grandfather, this fight is not about liberal or conservative politics. It is time for every parent, every Republican and Democrat, to demand that Congress reckon with toxic internet content directed at adolescents. That is the only way to get us out of this horror show. Tate brothers back in Romania to fight 'garbage' human trafficking allegations

March 22 (UPI) -- British-American influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan returned to Romania aboard a private jet from Miami, where they face human trafficking and other charges. Andrew Tate, 38, and Tristan Tate, 36, landed at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport early Saturday local time. They had flown in the United States on Feb. 27 after Romanian prosecutors lifted a two-year travel ban following of their arrests in December 2022. Speaking to reporters Saturday outside his residence in Bucharest, Andrew Tate said "anyone who believed any of this garbage has a particularly low IQ." "After all we've been through, we truly deserve the day in court where it is stated that we've done nothing wrong and that we should have never been in court in the first place," Andrew Tate said. "We should have never gone to jail. We should have never had our assets seized. We should have never had our names slandered. Andrew Tate, a former professional kickboxer with 10.8 million followers on X, posted a picture with his brother to the social media platform from the flight, writing that "innocent men don't run. THEY CLEAR THEIR NAME IN COURT." Romanian prosecutors said the brothers are "under judicial control" and must regularly report to the authorities, with the first check-in scheduled for Monday. The brothers are accused of human trafficking and forming an organized group to sexually exploit women in Romania. Andrew Tate, a self-proclaimed "misogynist" who claims to have made millions from social media despite being previously banned from platforms for his views, also is accused of rape. In addition, they are the targets of a separate investigation in Britain into allegations of rape and human trafficking. In the United States, a woman in a civil suit also alleges the brothers coerced her into sex work, and then defamed her after she gave evidence to Romanian authorities. They have denied the allegations. After they arrived in Florida, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said the state has "zero tolerance for people who abuse women and girls." He announced an active criminal investigation into the brothers, led by the Office of Statewide Prosecution. UltraViolet, a female-led gender-justice organization, has launched an advertising campaign against the Tates, accusing President Donald Trump of facilitating them to come to the United States. Trump has said he didn't know anything about the release of the brothers, who are Trump supporters. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said of the Tate brothers arrival in the state last month that "the reality is, Florida is not a place where you are welcome, with that type of conduct in the air. "I found out through the media that this was something that was happening," he said at the time. The Tates' attorney, Joseph McBride, blasted UltraViolet's campaign in a statement to the Miami Herald. "Feminism is a cancer that is responsible for the breakdown of the natural family, the rearing of pathetic men, and the genocide of children in the womb," McBride said in the statement. "The fact these losers want to jail Andrew and Tristan Tate for preaching their version of traditional masculinity highlights the fact that these fascist feminists are fragile weaklings incapable of defending their position in the free marketplace of ideas. Long live the First Amendment."

Criminal Allegations Follow the Tate Brothers to Florida

Rabat – Florida has launched a criminal investigation into media personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate, mere days after their arrival to the country, as Florida attorney general, James Uthmeier, warned that he is prepared to use the full force of the law to examine the allegations previously put forward against the Tates. Uthmeier condemned the brothers for publicly boasting about their actions that allegedly comprise soliciting, trafficking and preying on women around the world. 'Many of the victims are coming forward, some of them minors. People can spin or defend however they want, but in Florida, this type of behaviour is viewed as atrocious. We're not going to accept it,' the attorney general stated on Tuesday, March 4. The brothers arrived on United States soil from Romania on Thursday, March 27, after the travel ban that has been placed against them was lifted, according to their spokesperson and Romanian prosecutors. Namely, Romania's anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, said that they have approved to lift travel restrictions on the Tates without divulging the identity of the person or entity that made the request. Holders of British-American citizenships, were first arrested in December 2022 along with two other individuals in Romania on charges of rape, human trafficking and forming an organized crime group. The DIICOT updated the charges against the brothers later in 2023 from 'human trafficking' to 'human trafficking in continued form' upon identifying seven victims. According to DIICOT, the brothers remain under judicial supervision despite being allowed to leave Romania, and could still be summoned by judicial authorities that they would have to respond in order to avoid legal punishment with 'higher custodial measure.' Tates' spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, declared that a Bucharest court also ruled in favor of the brother's January 6 appeal to return some of the seized assets from their arrest, including six luxury cars, land, properties, company shares as well as all previously frozen bank accounts. Rumors of Trump's involvement in the release of the controversial influencers have been swarming around since February 17, when The Financial Times reported that the US president's envoys have raised the case with Romania's foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu at a security conference in Munich, earlier in the same month. The Tate brothers originally moved from the United Kingdom, where they're also facing criminal charges of the same nature, to Romania in 2017 due to their belief that they're less likely to face rape charges in a country where Andrew Tate claims 'corruption is accessible for everybody,' and the police ask women reporting rapes for more concrete evidence and even CCTV proof. Andrew's questionable religious affiliation The Tates initially came to fame through Andrew's boxing career and his participation in British reality TV Big Brother, but he rose in popularity among young men by spreading outrageous misogynist rhetoric online, sometimes under the guise of humour. Andrew also found an unforeseen audience among young Muslim men, especially after he reportedly converted to Islam. This is an act that some see as an attempt to polish his tarnished reputation and find new prospects after the Western audiences have seemingly had enough of him. In late July 2024 three young girls were killed in a knife attack at a dance studio in Southport, Merseyside. Local authorities later revealed that the suspect was a 17 year-old boy from Cardiff, but didn't reveal his identity. Far-right groups jumped on the opportunity to villainize Muslims – specifically immigrants – which ultimately led to widespread pogroms that targeted minorities across the country. Andrew Tate, who is half black, quickly jumped in defense of conservative values in the UK, even incredulously comparing the alt-right rioters to Palestinians facing genocide in Gaza. 'The soul of the Western man is so broken that when the invaders slaughter your daughters, you do absolutely f****** nothing,' he said.

'Active criminal investigation' into Andrew Tate, brother Tristan: Florida AG

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said Tuesday he has ordered state prosecutors to execute search warrants and issue subpoenas in the "nowactive criminal investigation" into influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate, after they arrived in the state from Romania. The announcement was first posted to X, saying, "Last week, I directed my office to work with our law enforcement partners to conduct a preliminary inquiry into Andrew and Tristan Tate." It continued, "Based on a thorough review of the evidence, I've directed the Office of Statewide Prosecution to execute search warrants and issue subpoenas in the now-active criminal investigation into the Tate brothers." The brothers landed at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Feb. 27 after Romania lifted a travel restriction on them, despite its ongoing criminal investigations into the Tates for human trafficking and forming an organized criminal group with the goal of sexually exploiting women in two cases. Andrew Tate was also charged with rape. The Tate brothers deny all charges against them. MORE: Andrew Tate and brother land in Florida, DeSantis says they're not welcome The two had been confined to Romania since late 2022 and were charged in both 2023 and 2024. Romanian officials announced that court restrictions prohibiting the brothers from leaving Romania while awaiting trial had been lifted, but that the charges against them remained in force. The Tates also face another criminal case in the United Kingdom, where an arrest warrant has been issued on separate allegations of human trafficking and rape. The UK government has faced calls to demand the Tates' extradition from the U.S. The Tates' release followed reports of lobbying by President Donald Trump's administration. Trump denied any knowledge of it when questioned by reporters about their arrival in the United States. But Romania's foreign minister has confirmed that Trump's special envoy, Richard Grenell, raised the brothers' case during a meeting in February, although he denied being pressured. Key Trump officials and allies, including Elon Musk and Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. have previously condemned the case against the Tates. The charges against the Tates remain in force and they will be expected to return to Romania for court appearances, according to a statement from Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT.) The agency warned that failure to observe the remaining judicial restrictions could result in harsher restrictions being instated. MORE: Andrew Tate, 'King of Toxic Masculinity,' faces 3 legal cases in 2 countries Despite other Trump allies' support for the Tates, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed surprise and anger at their arrival in Florida, telling reporters on the day that the Tates were "not welcome" given the conduct they are accused of. Uthmeier, the attorney general, said he had directed state law enforcement to investigate whether any of their alleged crimes relating to human trafficking and violence against women triggered Florida jurisdiction, and pledging to "hold them accountable" if so. One of the alleged victims at the center of one of the Romanian cases against Tate is a Florida woman. The American citizen has accused the Tates of luring her to Romania under the pretence of romantic relationship and then pressuring her into working as a pornographic webcam model, according to court documents. The Tates have denied the woman's accusations. It is unclear if the new Florida investigation involves the women's allegations. Uthmeier declined to give details on Tuesday but pledged to use "every tool" to hold the Tates accountable. "These guys have themselves publicly admitted to participating in what very much appears to be soliciting, trafficking, preying upon women around the world," he told a local reporter. "People can spin it however they want, but in Florida this type of behaviour is viewed as atrocious. We're not going to accept it." "If these guys did criminal activity here in Florida we will go after them with full force of law and hold them accountable," he said. A lawyer representing the Tates, Joseph D. McBride, condemned the investigation, accusing Uthmeier of making "inflammatory, biased" comments and claiming the case was politically motivated. "Today, Attorney General James Uthmeier threw ethics law out of the window when he publicly took a side in an ongoing Florida lawsuit where Andrew and Tristan Tate are suing a Florida woman," McBride, wrote on X, challenging the attorney general to present evidence. McBride blamed the new investigation on DeSantis, calling him "an angry, vertically challenged imp who hates Tate and Trump for being actual men. Attorney General Uthmeier is his pathetic lap dog." The Tates brought a defamation lawsuit against the Florida woman in the state in 2023, accusing her and her family of conspiring to damage their reputations by participating in the Romanian case. Last month, the woman brought her own countersuit against the Tates, accusing them of using the defamation lawsuit to try to silence victims. Both cases are currently pending. A lawyer for the Florida woman in the Romania case praised the attorney general's move to criminally investigate the Tates. "Florida AG Uthmeier is right to criminally investigate the Tate brothers who have publicly boasted about exploiting women yet have continuously sought to undermine the Romanian investigation into these crimes," Dani Pinter, senior vice president at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation said in a statement. "Over 40 victims have been identified across Romania, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They deserve justice. Florida's investigation is a positive step towards justice realized." One of the women who is an alleged victim at the center of one of the Romanian cases is an American woman who lives in Florida. It's unclear from Uthmeier's statement what the investigation is examining right now or how it might proceed. ABC News' Meredith Deliso and T. Michelle Murphy contributed to this report.
