Tall jockey Corey Sutherland is still on cloud nine after his first city win last Saturday

One of the tallest jockeys in Australian horse racing, apprentice Corey Sutherland's first metropolitan victory on Tattersall's Tiara Day at Eagle Farm on Saturday is still sinking in for the hardworking 21-year-old. The 181cm Sutherland named fellow tall hoops Jimmy Orman and Jamie Mott as his idols when growing up and he aims to utilise his claiming advantage in the months ahead after his impressive performance on the big stage last Saturday. Sutherland was still floating on cloud nine on a rare Sunday off after riding the Desleigh Forster -trained five-year-old gelding He's Heaven to victory in a Benchmark 85 Handicap (1200m), getting the better of top Sydney jockeys Tim Clark and Jason Collett. 'It's a bit of a weight off my shoulders to get that first metro win,' said the well-mannered Sutherland, who only received his metropolitan jockey's licence two weeks ago. 'It didn't really hit me until I was driving home and started thinking about it. 'My first time at Eagle Farm on a Saturday on Tatt's Tiara day, a Group 1 day, it's pretty special. 'It was pretty surreal when I got on He's Heaven, it's just a different atmosphere. It's like going from junior football to playing in the NRL.' He's Heaven alright! Corey Sutherland didn't let the rest get near him in the second at Eagle Farm🥇 @Desracing74 — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 Sunshine Coast resident Sutherland hasn't let his height hinder his ability to progress as a jockey since leaving school at age 15. British rider Jack Andrews (193cm) is considered to be the tallest jockey in the world, according to several reports in the UK while Sutherland stands at the same high as NSW-based apprentice Ben Osmond. 'I'm about 181cm or just under six foot,' Sutherland said. 'Jimmy Orman is just below me and Jamie Mott is a tall jockey as well. 'Early on when you first start everyone's got their opinion and they all say 'you're too tall, you'll get too heavy' but it's just how hard you work and how much you want it. 'I rode the last eight days between Toowoomba to Ipswich and Mackay to Dalby and finished the week off at Eagle Farm. 'For five of those days I rode at 55.5kg and it wasn't too much of a problem. I ride anything between 10 and 14 horses at trackwork in the morning. 'I work hard and I can still live a normal life. It's not a big deal to walk around at about 56kg during the winter time.' Sutherland has ridden 296 times in the country and had just nine metro races for 47 career wins. He said it was surreal sitting in the jockeys' room on Saturday at Eagle Farm alongside stars such as James McDonald, Tommy Berry, Kerrin McEvoy, Collett and Clark. 'Timmy Clark was the first person to say to me 'good job' after I won and we pulled up which is pretty insane coming from him,' Sutherland said. 'You look up to these types of jockeys because they've won that many Group 1s and they're big-day riders and you're riding against them, it's pretty surreal.' The Ipswich-born Sutherland did much of his schooling in Tamworth before moving back to Lowood near Gatton when his mum Lisa's mother became ill. He performed on the rodeo circuit until the Covid pandemic hit and then worked as a trackwork rider and stablehand under country NSW trainer Brett Cavanough in Scone and later with his uncle Trevor in Wagga Wagga. Sutherland started his racing career in Tamworth for Cody Morgan, riding his first winner Talbragar in March, 2023. Ironically, Talbragar is owned by Corumbene Stud, which bred and race Saturday's Tattersall's Tiara champion Tashi, trained by Peter Snowden. Kelly Schweida, Billy Healey and Natalie McCall.

Post-race jockey reports from the 2025 Tattersall's Tiara

Irish jockey Tom Sherry scored the biggest win of his career when sending Tashi to victory in the $700,000 Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Tashi's win also provided her trainer Peter Snowden with his 50th Group 1 victory, 20 of those wins were in partnership with his son Paul. Tashi raced forward of midfield before launching her claim in the early part of the straight and the mare surged clear of the field to score a dominant win over Abounding with Olentia in third. "It's Tashi's tiara!" ðŸ'' Tashi brings the blessings today and wins the Tatt's Tiara for @SnowdenRacing1, and doesn't @tomo_sherry love it, a Group 1 win! 🙌 @BrisRacingClub — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 28, 2025 The favourite Floozie led into the straight but weakened in the run to the line, finishing fifth. A five-year-old mare by Sebring, Tashi's victory was her fifth from 26 starts, taking her earnings to more than $1 million. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Tattersall's Tiara. 1st - TASHI (Tom Sherry) The stars aligned today, and I can't thank Peter and his team enough. It's been a long road and it's been a tough year, but moments like this make it all worthwhile. When I came up outside Abounding, I got the jitters and went full bore. She's had an unbelievable prep. She's kept protruding, even though she hasn't won she's been super consistent. I'm so proud of this mare and it feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Things like this don't happen to people like me, so I'm delighted. 2nd - ABOUNDING (Rachel King) She's been very brave in defeat. She finally got her chance today from a nice draw, and she showed what she can do. The winner was too good for us today, but she was fabulous. 3rd - OLENTIA (Damien Thornton) She ran really well, we just had to deal with a bit of traffic. 4th - EXOTIQUE MISS (Rachel King) She's run a super race. She's been racing consistently all carnival, she stepped up to Group 1 grade and was outstanding again. 5th - FLOOZIE (Angela Jones) She probably just had to do a little more than we would've liked, and never got cover. She didn't settle as well as she usually does and it probably told late. 6th - INFANCY (Jason Collett) She's run great. The barrier just made it difficult, but I was really happy. 7th - FIRESTORM (James McDonald) She's run well, but it's been hard to make ground on this firm track. 8th - BUBBA'S BAY (Andrew Mallyon) She was really brave, we just got impeded with 150 to go and should have finished much closer. 9th - COCO JAMBOO (Chad Schofield) We got her out the gates but we had to take her back from that gate and she didn't finish off as well as she can 10th - EL MORZILLO (Tommy Berry) We had a lovely run on the back of the eventual winner. We just got dragged down pretty badly coming round the home turn, and I thought she was going to come down. She struggled to recover from that. 11th - SEMANA (Robbie Dolan) That was probably one of her best runs for a long time. I got all the luck from the wide barrier, the splits came and she quickened up well but the track was probably a touch form for her. If she keeps progressing, you should see her back to her best. 12th - COCO SUN (Billy Egan) Once she gets out to a mile and more, you should be in for a good prep. 13th - KONASANA (Regan Bayliss) The drying track just worked against us, she got a lovely run but she prefers softer tracks. 14th - ZASZOU (Ryan Maloney) She didn't want any part of the firm conditions and was unable to let down. 15th - ARCTIC GLAMOUR (Kerrin McEvoy) She had a wide run in transit which told on her in the end. 16th - COEUR VOLANTE (Jordan Childs) She didn't have any luck from the gate which affected her ability to finish off her race. 17th - GRINZINGER BELLE (Tim Clark) She was below her best today so hopefully there are no issues.

2025 Tatt's Tiara: Grinzinger Belle runs for new owner Yulong

Yulong could get a quick return on investment with Grinzinger Belle in the Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara on Saturday at Eagle Farm. Chinese billionaire Yuesheng Zhang, owner of breeding and racing giant Yulong, paid $1.45m for the bold frontrunning mare and multiple Group 2 winner last month at the Inglis Chairman's Sale. Grinzinger Belle, trained by Danny O'Brien, is an $11 chance in pre-nominations Tatt's Tiara markets. O'Brien's racing manager Jack Howard said Grinzinger Belle had progressed as planned to target the 1400m Eagle Farm feature with fresh legs – 10 weeks between runs. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'We always had a plan to head up there with her, obviously John (Wheeler) sold her and Yulong purchased her and we were lucky enough to get her back to train, which we are grateful for. 'Hopefully we can get a result up there for (Yulong) and continue the relationship going forward.' • 'I just have to work harder': Williams zeros in on premiership Grinzinger Belle last raced on April 12 in Sydney, finished midfield in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m). The four-year-old travelled up to Queensland after a sharp Flemington jumpout late last month. 'They really went along, one of Gai's (Waterhouse) won the trial by about five or six, Zac Spain rode (the jump out) and hardly moved and she went through her gears, it was a good test,' Howard said. Sydney-based Group 1 jockey Tim Clark has been booked to ride Grinzinger Belle on Saturday. • Gilbert Gardiner's horses to follow and forgive from Flemington on Saturday Howard confirmed Brave Design would tackle the Listed Tattersall's Stakes (1400m). The two-year-old Brave Smash colt won the Listed Oxlade Stakes (1200m) last start at Eagle Farm. Brave Design, a well-travelled colt who raced in Melbourne and Adelaide before the Sunshine State raid, placed fourth in the Group 2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) two starts back. Jockey Jordan Childs will again head to Brisbane to pilot Brave Design. 'It's really good, Jordie went to Adelaide and rode him, he's ridden him twice up there and ridden him well,' Howard said.
