TAWAU: Police arrested a foreigner suspected of possessing another person's MyKad at a lodging, here, Friday. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was apprehended during a crime prevention patrol. 'The police team, led by Inspector Hamka Ab Rashid, detained the man after finding him acting suspiciously in front of a building,' he said on Sunday. Jasmin said the suspect attempted to flee when officers tried to inspect him but was caught by the on-duty personnel. Initial investigations revealed that the suspect verbally claimed to have identification documents, but checks confirmed that the documents did not belong to him. 'The police team arrested the suspect after finding two MyKad cards, a MyKid and a birth certificate under another person's name in his wallet,' he said. Advertisement Further investigation found that the man was a foreigner without valid identification documents permitting him to stay in the country. TAWAU: Police detained a man suspected of being involved in extortion through a telephone call. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the victim lodged a report after giving in to the suspect's threats. 'The 39-year-old suspect accused the victim of disturbing his business and threatened to cut off the victim's head,' he said, Thursday. Jasmin said the victim out of fear transferred RM3,000 to a bank account registered under the business name. 'However, after the transaction, the suspect contacted the victim again and demanded additional RM1,500 to resolve the issue,' he added. Jasmin said a team from the Criminal Investigation Department at the Tawau District Police Headquarters arrested the suspect to assist with the investigation. Advertisement The case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, or a fine, or caning, or two of these penalties. TAWAU: Police seized RM87,000 worth of syabu smuggled from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Tawau Airport on Saturday. Tawau Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said two suspects, a 44-year-old man from Perak and a 21-year-old from Sarawak, were arrested. "The 2.5kg of syabu was hidden in a biscuit tin, plastic noodle packaging, and food mix inside a suitcase," he said. Police also confiscated three mobile phones, two red and black suitcases, a vacuum sealer, and a water bottle for further investigation. The case is being probed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. TAWAU: The motorcyclist in a viral video who allegedly attempted to flee from police inspection at Mile 4 Jalan Apas on Monday had also committed several traffic offences previously. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said when checked, the 28-year-old suspect was also found to have four summonses issued to him. He said the incident occurred at around 7.50am while two traffic officers from the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) were on duty managing traffic. 'While the police was on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow, a motorcyclist suddenly stopped in a suspicious manner. 'When officers attempted to conduct an inspection, the motorcyclist panicked and suddenly accelerated, causing one of the officers to fall,' Jasmin said in a media statement on Tuesday. A video recording of the incident went viral on social media at around 10.23am, showing the motorcyclist trying to evade the police inspection. The location, along Jalan Tawau Lama, connects the town centre to Jalan Damai and Kampung Titingan. The body was first spotted by the public, who alerted Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) and the Fire and Rescue Department. The man, fully clothed in a short-sleeved shirt and black pants, had facial injuries. The discovery caused traffic congestion as crowds gathered before police arrived to control the situation.
