YOU Series Finale Almost Ended Very Differently for Joe Goldberg: ‘We Were Not All on the Same Page'
With the final season of YOU still claiming a spot in Netflix's Top 10, fans are clearly savoring every last moment they can spend with Badgley's literal ladykiller, which feels oddly appropriate, considering the series finale ends with Joe Goldberg breaking the fourth wall to judge people who fangirl over monsters such as himself. Speaking of that series finale, it concludes with (spoiler alert!) Joe getting exposed for his many heinous crimes and spending the rest of his days behind bars. But the Lifetime-turned-Netflix drama almost reached a very different conclusion, and it would have been just as divisive as the ending we got. More from TVLine Star Search Reboot to Stream Live on Netflix - Get Details Bridgerton Earns Early Renewal for Seasons 5 and 6 - Plus, Watch a Season 4 Sneak Peek Lupin Renewed for Part 4 at Netflix The possibility of Joe getting killed off in the series finale 'was very much an option,' co-showrunner Michael Foley recently told TVLine. 'We debated it as a room. We were on the same page in terms of him getting his comeuppance, having to face what he is, and giving a voice to the victims and to the loved ones of the victims. We were all very much on the same page about all of that, but when it came down to the specifics of his capture versus death versus seeing him in court and all of that, there were just too many ways to go — and we were not all on the same page.' So, what happened? Basically, the powers that be eventually decided death was 'too easy' an out for ol' Joe. 'We thought he needed to be punished, and we liked the idea of him being in a cage of his own, not being able to enjoy the touch of somebody he loves, and being completely powerless,' Foley explained. 'That was a better punishment, not to mention a better visual than a tombstone.' Do you think YOU should have ended with Joe's death, or are you glad (for whatever reason) that he survived? The Rookie Trio Ponders Tim's Next Move (‘He's Whipped!'), Fights Over Season 7 Highlights — WATCH
The following contains that spoiler from 's Season 7 finale, now streaming on Hulu. A small, friendly fight broke on the the Disney Upfront's blue carpet when TVLine asked three stars of ABC's The Rookie to single out a favorite Season 7 episode, scene or guest star. Eric Winter and Richard T. Jones, however, grappled for dibs on guest star player Kiké Hernández, the pro baseball player who recently cameo'd as himself/a celebrity 'gift' given to Sergeant Bradford by a suddenly rich Skip Tracer Randy. Next up, I invited Augustine to name his favorite country-fried saying of Miles', and the Opelousas, La. native had one ready on the tip of his twisted tongue. Then, with The Rookie's season finale airing hours later, I had to of course pick Winter's brain on what Tim's next move will be, after asking on-again/off-again girlfriend Sergeant Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) to move in with him… only to realize she snoozed through his pitch. Press play above for not just Winter's POV on #Chenford's future, but Jones' advice for madly-in-love Tim. (The Rookie returns with Season 8 in… early 2026.) Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo Sounds Off About the Recent Plot Twist That She Was ‘Deeply Against'
Can't say that I blame Ellen Pompeo for being 'deeply against' the Grey's Anatomy storyline in which legendary rule-breaker Meredith followed protocol to the letter upon learning that Catherine's protegé Evynn had lied about wife Tasha's Alzheimer's in order to obtain a liver transplant for her. But, as the actress tells our sister site Variety, 'I don't always have a say in the choices the character makes. And writers will initially service a plot before they might stop to think, 'Would the Meredith Grey that [Ellen] built… make that choice?'' Case in point: the Season 21 two-parter in question. (Read the recaps here and here.) 'My problem with that storyline,' Pompeo explains, 'was the Meredith Grey that I've created would have always been like, 'I'm pissed that you lied, [but] let's figure out how to game the system together to get you this f—king liver. F—k the system. The system is broken.' She's done free surgeries, whatever it takes, to actually heal and help people.' According to Variety, the Grey's Anatomy OG 'was so livid that she had an emotional outburst.' Ultimately, guest star Lena Waithe, who played Evynn, adjusted Pompeo's POV, helping her see that the plot was serving Meredith's significant other, Nick. 'At the end of the day,' she says, 'Meg [Marinis], who's the showrunner, Debbie [Allen, the EP who plays Catherine] and Shonda [Rhimes, the series' creator] all recognize that all of my outspokenness about the creative on the show is all out of a place of caring deeply about the show. 'I see my job as trying to keep Shonda's legacy as good and solid as we can,' she continues, 'and the minute you stop caring or phoning it in or getting lazy, we're not really doing what we've been paid to do.' YOU Series Finale Ends With Chilling Message to Viewers; EPs Explain That Fourth Wall-Breaking Moment
YOU The title of Netflix's YOU has referred to a number of different individuals over the course of its five-season run — namely the myriad women unlucky enough to cross Joe Goldberg's path — but it takes on a whole new meaning in the series finale. More from TVLine The Four Seasons' Tina Fey and Will Forte Talk Playing Husband and Wife, Recall Their SNL Days - Watch Video YOU's Final Season Brings Back Familiar Faces From Joe's Sordid Past - Just Don't Expect to See [Spoiler] Sweet Magnolias Renewed for Season 5 Following his final showdown against Louise, in which she shoots him in the genitals before turning him over to the police, Joe closes out the last episode with another dramatic voiceover, this time from behind bars. With his head freshly shaven, he pores over his latest fan mail, letters from 'admirers' of his work. 'Why am I in a cage when these crazies write me all the depraved things they want me to do to them?' he says to himself. 'Maybe we have a problem as a society. Maybe we should fix what's broken in us. Maybe the problem isn't me. Maybe it's… you.' Lest you doubt that Joe is in fact referring to you, the viewer, Penn Badgley looks right at the camera when he says this final line. More specifically, co-showrunner Michael Foley tells TVLine, Joe is addressing 'society' with his closing speech. 'We lump ourselves in with the audience in terms of people who've rooted for Joe for 50 episodes, and it was about waking us all up to the fact that he's a horrific monster,' Foley says. 'We wanted him to blame us. Despite getting his quote-unquote comeuppance, and even being made to see himself as a monster, he still won't take the blame for it. It was very much intentional that he would break the fourth wall in that final moment.' The series finale, in no uncertain terms, confirms Joe's status as an abusive monster. But unlike Taylor Swift, whose song 'Anti-Hero' famously closed out the show's fourth season, Joe is unable to admit that he's the problem — it's him. Hit PLAY on the video above for Badgley's additional thoughts on the final season (as well as the fates of Joe and… little Joe), then drop a comment with your own review of 's swan song below. Ghosts' Román Zaragoza Ponders How Sasappis Died: ‘I Want It to Be Something Really Embarrassing'
And then there was one: Following Ghosts' reveal last season about how Hetty died, Sasappis is the only spirit left whose demise remains a mystery. While his portrayer Román Zaragoza doesn't know when the CBS comedy will share the circumstances of Sas' death, he does have a request for how it should go. Matlock Left Matty and Olympia in a Very Surprising Place Ahead of 2-Hour Finale 'I keep thinking it'd be really funny [if it was] something, like, incredibly embarrassing,' the actor tells TVLine. 'Because Thor was kind of there, so maybe he knows. Like, he's hiding it. I don't know, but I want it to be something really embarrassing.' Zaragoza says he's had 'some conversations with some writers,' but the timing of the big reveal is 'very much up in the air.' 'They want to dive into it, but I think it's a slow burn,' Zaragoza explains. 'They don't want to show all the cards yet, because at this point, I think we know how every ghost died except for Sas, and we know all the powers, too. So I think they're trying to hold onto his death to be a bigger thing down the road. But I'm curious.' In addition to diving into Sas' death, Zaragoza has a few other items on his Season 5 wish list. (The series was picked up for two seasons in February.) 'Seeing more of his life could be really fun,' Zaragoza shares. 'I want to see more of him with his dad, would love to bring my dad [Gregory Zaragoza] back [as Sasappis' father], and would love to see more about who he was when he was alive, because he was a timid person. In that flashback with his father, we saw that he's kind of timid, and then him with Shiki, he's timid, and saying, 'Hi,' and, like, how did that come about? Who is he? Who was he when he was alive?' 'The more that we can see that, it translates into what's happening now,' Zaragoza continues. 'And then that would be really fun to see him with [new love interest] Joan, and to see how all these things are coming back, all these things he hasn't even thought about for the last 500 years because he's just been dead, and been living that kind of afterlife.' fans, what are your theories about how Sas died?
