Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo Sounds Off About the Recent Plot Twist That She Was ‘Deeply Against'
Can't say that I blame Ellen Pompeo for being 'deeply against' the Grey's Anatomy storyline in which legendary rule-breaker Meredith followed protocol to the letter upon learning that Catherine's protegé Evynn had lied about wife Tasha's Alzheimer's in order to obtain a liver transplant for her. But, as the actress tells our sister site Variety, 'I don't always have a say in the choices the character makes. And writers will initially service a plot before they might stop to think, 'Would the Meredith Grey that [Ellen] built… make that choice?''
Case in point: the Season 21 two-parter in question. (Read the recaps here and here.) 'My problem with that storyline,' Pompeo explains, 'was the Meredith Grey that I've created would have always been like, 'I'm pissed that you lied, [but] let's figure out how to game the system together to get you this f—king liver. F—k the system. The system is broken.'

'Instead, Meredith chooses, for some reason, to be mad and snitch and tell UNOS and tell the board that [Evynn] lied and that [Tasha] shouldn't get the liver — when Meredith has subverted the system for 20 years to do the right thing. She's done free surgeries, whatever it takes, to actually heal and help people.'
According to Variety, the Grey's Anatomy OG 'was so livid that she had an emotional outburst.' Ultimately, guest star Lena Waithe, who played Evynn, adjusted Pompeo's POV, helping her see that the plot was serving Meredith's significant other, Nick. 'At the end of the day,' she says, 'Meg [Marinis], who's the showrunner, Debbie [Allen, the EP who plays Catherine] and Shonda [Rhimes, the series' creator] all recognize that all of my outspokenness about the creative on the show is all out of a place of caring deeply about the show.
'I see my job as trying to keep Shonda's legacy as good and solid as we can,' she continues, 'and the minute you stop caring or phoning it in or getting lazy, we're not really doing what we've been paid to do.'

And then once they did, Walter went missing! Vince located Walter, but before they and Sharon could find their way to safety, the roof collapsed — as a horrified and helpless Bode watched from outside…. As if the cliffhanger wasn't harrowing enough, as soon as the finale ended on the East Coast, the news broke that Burke, who has played Vince since Day 1, was exiting the CBS drama after three seasons. So I worry what [Vince's death] would to do him, and how poorly he would respond. 'We know [Bode has] made leaps and bounds as far as the person he is after being incarcerated,' Thieriot continues, 'but has he come fare enough to deal with something like that or not…? It's heavy.' Étoile Cancelled After One Season at Amazon, Despite Two-Season Order
Étoile is taking its final bow, a little earlier than expected. Amazon's Prime Video has cancelled the Amy Sherman-Palladino ballet comedy after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports, despite Amazon giving the series a two-season order initially. The decision to cancel 'came down largely to performance vs. cost,' Deadline says. The Weeknd Might Not Be Retiring His Music Persona After All
The Weeknd has teased that Hurry Up Tomorrow— his sixth album and upcoming film of the same name— also marks the end of the artist fans have grown to love for over 15 years. However, that may not necessarily be the case. While promoting the film at CinemaCon 2025, Abel Tesfaye told EW that this moment feels like both a death and resurrection. 'It feels like it [the end of the Weeknd]. I mean, I've kind of toyed with the idea in the past with albums,' he noted. 'But it could also just be a rebirth. Who knows?' Back in January, the 35-year-old announced plans to retire his alter ego. 'It's a headspace I've gotta get into that I just don't have any more desire for,' he explained to Variety. 'You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.' Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the conclusion in the trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours, which was followed by 2022's Dawn FM. The film follows a fictionalized version of himself, also named Abel, who gets taken on an insane ride by a seductive stranger, Anima (Jenna Ortega). Director Trey Edward Shults, shared with EW in February that he 'tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it.' Shults confirmed that it was an 'absolute possibility' that the movie would be The Weeknd's last hurrah chapter, adding 'For people that aren't his fans and don't know anything about him or even care about the final capping of the Weeknd, I think you still have a great movie to go through.' The Weeknd considers the film to be 'really introspective and cathartic.' It hits theaters this Friday.
