These 19 Summer Haircut Trends Are The Mid-Year Refresh Your Hair Needs
It's been a strong year for haircut trends โ and we're only halfway through. From ' ghost layers ' (invisible layers that add movement to fine hair without an obvious grow-out) to the 'kicked' bob (a shoulder-skimming cut with chic, flipped ends), there's something for everyone. As we head into summer, a wave of new cuts and styles is hitting top salons. Expect much shorter chops (anything to get hair off your forehead) and subtle twists on timeless classics (aero bob, anyone?). There's no need to look any further for your inspiration. Ahead, a handful of hairstylists from London to Los Angeles share the 19 cuts they predict will dominate summer and beyond. The Aero Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by ๐ธ๐๐๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ โ๐๐๐ฃ ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐๐ | ๐๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ค๐ฅ๐๐ โ๐๐๐ฃ ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐๐ ๐ (@adequatehairstudio) Federico Vazzoloretto, creative director at Taylor Taylor London, predicts the aero bob โ weightless, airy and full of movement โ will be the bob du jour this summer. 'It's a breezy younger sibling of the classic bob,' says Vazzoloretto โ 'less about rigid shape and more about light layering and softness.' Think Kaia Gerber and model Simone Powderly. The aero bob is ideal for fine to medium hair, especially those looking to enhance natural movement without heavy styling, says Vazzoloretto. It also works well with waves and curls. 'Expect chin-to-collarbone length with a gentle texture that catches the light and the wind,' he says. We love this airy bob on Nithi, posted to Instagram by Adequate Hair Studio. The Sculpted Tapered Cut View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yrsa Daley-Ward (@yrsadaleyward) Celebrity hairstylist Lorraine Dublin says the sculpted tapered cut, as seen recently on Lupita Nyong'o, is ideal for summer. 'Think of a modern twist on the classic tapered afro: closer on the sides with volume on top,' says Dublin. This cut on Yrsa Daley-Ward is beautiful. 'The sculpted tapered cut is low-maintenance and works beautifully with tighter curls and coils, emphasising natural texture while keeping the neck and sides cool,' Dublin adds. The Glass Cascade View this post on Instagram A post shared by ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ โฏ๏ธ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ (@styled_by_selena) 'Imagine long, ultra-glossy hair with soft cascading layers that melt into one another โ that's how we would describe the glass cascade,' says Vazzoloretto. He explains that the cut maintains its length while introducing barely-there movement through subtle layers and face-framing pieces, creating a look that feels grown-up, not 'girly.' Vazzoloretto adds that it's ideal for those with medium to thick, straight or slightly wavy hair, and anyone looking to modernise their style without sacrificing length. Sofia Richie Grainge and Jodie Turner-Smith are the ultimate inspiration, but this cut by hairstylist Selena is also stunning. The Luma Cut View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mayssa Deeb (@mayssas_beauty_mark) The luma cut is a step up for curls and waves, says Neil Moodie, editorial stylist and founder of The Neil Moodie Studio. 'It enhances natural shape with seamless layering and soft internal graduation, giving hair a halo-like effect around the face and crown,' explains Moodie, adding that it's designed for movement and light reflection. 'It's perfect for anyone embracing their natural texture โ but with a modern silhouette,' says Moodie. Look to this style and colour posted to Instagram by Mayssa Deeb. The Riviera Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by Andreea Ionita (@andreeai0nita) Hairstylist Tom Smith bills the Riviera bob as an upgrade to the much-loved Italian bob: 'The Riviera bob shape is slightly more shattered and relaxed โ it's summer's answer to this popular bob shape.' He explains that the naturally ruffled, blunt-cut style has just enough movement to feel fresh, while still maximising volume for a look that's luxurious. 'This is ideal for fine to medium hair,' says Smith, 'but thicker hair types can also enjoy this shape with more considered shaping and layering.' He suggests asking your stylist for a straight bob that sits just below the chin, like this style on Bianca Onici. '[Then add] some soft, very long layering. It should be cut with a piecey and shattered finish,' says Smith. The Shaped Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yasmeen ูุงุณู ูู (@yasmeenscott) 'Kelly Rowland's classic bob style isn't going anywhere,' says Dublin, 'but this season it's all about structure and personality.' Think rounded ends, plenty of layers and defined curl patterns that move, says Dublin, much like this style on actor Yasmeen Scott. 'This cut is ideal for type three and four curls [if you] want shape without sacrificing length,' says Dublin. The Whimsical Pixie View this post on Instagram A post shared by Caju (@fizcaju) The pixie is having a moment, and Eddie M. Parra, senior stylist at BENJAMIN Salon NY,C says it's sticking around. This summer, though, the short crop takes on a more whimsical feel, like this cut by Caja on Instagram. 'It's all about short, soft layers, hugging your head shape with longer pieces around the face,' explains Parra. 'We're already seeing this cut on the red carpet โ think celebs like Tyla and Nicole Kidman.' The Power Shag View this post on Instagram A post shared by โงโง ๐ฝ๐๐ฐ๐น๐น๐ฐ ๐พ๐น๐บ๐ โงโง (@ 'This is a reimagined, super-luxe take on the classic shag,' says Vazzoloretto. 'Think sculpted layers, tailored face-framing pieces and a whole lot of personality,' โ like this cut by Ryenne Snow. 'It's edgy but wearable, with serious volume and movement.' Why is it trending? 'We're seeing a rise in maximalist hair, the kind that speaks volumes โ literally,' says Vazzoloretto. Winona Forever View this post on Instagram A post shared by CRAB SALAD (@ 'This is a cool little bixie that's easy to maintain,' says hairstylist Laura at London-based salon Crab Salad. The style blends a bob with a pixie cut, featuring longer face-framing pieces and choppy bangs. This particular cut by Crab Salad's Toby nails the look. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dimitris Giannetos (@dimitrishair) Celebrity hairstylist and colourist Dimitris Giannetos says bobs are great because they're incredibly versatile. 'The bob off duty is a graduated cut that is styled with a lived-in feel,' he says, referencing a recent look he created on Gigi Hadid: 'I wanted to let a little more natural texture show through, but still keep that iconic hair flip at the bottom. It looks effortless and wearable for everyday, but it's still very chic.' Bold Buzz Cuts View this post on Instagram A post shared by GABRIELLE JANAY ๐ (@gabriellejanay) Dublin pinpoints the bold buzz cut as one to watch: 'Rihanna's minimalist yet expressive ultra-short cut โ like buzz cuts and skin fades โ is being elevated with etched patterns, colour play, and texture-focused styling,' she says. 'It's a bold trend for those embracing ease, edge and full curl liberation.' We love this close curly crop on digital creator Gabrielle Janay. View this post on Instagram A post shared by nicole (@maybeitswavybaby) 'Overly styled beach waves or perfect curls can feel a bit 'try-hard',' says Smith. Ghost waves, on the other hand โ relaxed waves enhanced by subtle layers โ offer a natural-looking texture that suits everyone. Look to digital creator Nicole for inspiration. Smith explains that while ghost waves work best on hair with some natural texture, they can also be styled into other hair types with the right technique, like using a curling iron and turning it in different directions to avoid the spiral effect. 'If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, [distribute] your favourite curl-defining product [from root to tip] and air-dry,' says Smith. 'Only scrunch if your hair gets too straight after brushing, and don't touch it until it's fully dry.' The Poolside Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by miho mai / ็ฆๅฒกใใ / ใใ / ็ฆๅฒก็พๅฎนๅฎค / ใใใฅใฉใซ (@zoey__mai) 'The poolside bob sits just at the jawline,' say Stephen Buller and Anita Rice of London-based salon Buller + Rice. 'It's neat, versatile, and ideal for the summer. While it can be worn classic and sharp, the real fun lies in its wet-look styling,'โ like this cut by Miho Mai. When slicked back and tucked behind the ears, it has a modern, accidentally perfect feel about it. They suggest combing through the Davines Shimmering Mist, ยฃ22.75, or OI Oil, ยฃ45, while damp, tucking hair behind the ears, and letting it dry naturally. The Effortless Butterfly View this post on Instagram A post shared by โโญห๏ฝกโ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ โโญห๏ฝกโ (@beautybyv1v) 'This haircut is perfect for my long-haired girls,' says Parra. 'Think soft, romantic layers that create movement throughout the hair.' Parra cites Sydney Sweeney and Ayo Edebiri as key inspirations, but we love this style by Vivian Brown. Even better? You don't have to blow-dry it to perfection every single time you wash your hair: 'A cut like this is perfect for air-drying, especially at the beach this summer,' Parra adds. The Brat Cut View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dimitris Giannetos (@dimitrishair) 'I love the 'brat' cut for summer,' says Giannetos. The inspiration? Charli XCX, of course โ though Amelia Gray is another great reference. 'This cut has long, messy and undone layers,' he says. 'It's a low-maintenance style that's great for the summer season, especially if you're on the go.' The Sumptuous Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by SCOTT YOUNGSON (@scottyoungsonhair) The bob isn't going anywhere, and this summer it's getting boxier and sharper. According to Parra, the style exudes quiet luxury: 'A completely balanced, straight bob cut is minimalist,' he says, but the impact is major. 'It varies from jaw length to collarbone length,' adds Parra, 'but it's always super chic and timeless,' โ like this cut by Scott Youngson. The Power Crop View this post on Instagram A post shared by miho mai / ็ฆๅฒกใใ / ใใ / ็ฆๅฒก็พๅฎนๅฎค / ใใใฅใฉใซ (@zoey__mai) The power crop is a sharp, structured pixie-meets-bob hybrid defined by clean lines and confidence, says Moodie. 'This cut sits at cheekbone level with subtle undercutting or texturing to add movement without sacrificing precision,' he says. Look to this cut by Miho Mai. 'It's sleek, bold and low-maintenance โ perfect for professionals and creatives alike who want an edge without the upkeep,' adds Moodie. Better still, it grows out seamlessly thanks to its uniform length. Fang-Style Bangs View this post on Instagram A post shared by Isabella (@ Crab Salad's Toby highlights fang-style bangs โ short, sharp fringe pieces โ as a bold, loud, and unapologetic haircut trend set to hit salons this summer. It's not for the faint of heart. We love this cut by hairstylist Isabella. The Roadie View this post on Instagram A post shared by G R A C E A M E L I A (@graceamelia___) 'The roadie is all about leaning into what your hair naturally wants to do, not what's trending,' say Buller and Rice. 'It's got a nod to the early '00s โ think the Olsen twins' 'I don't give a fuck' chic.' This style suits anyone with natural waves or texture, according to Buller and Rice. Introducing medium to long layers and face-framing pieces adds volume and texture. A texture spray like Davines Salt Spray, ยฃ22.75, will help add movement to your lengths. This look by Grace Amelia at Hershesons is beautiful. The Neo Bob View this post on Instagram A post shared by miho mai / ็ฆๅฒกใใ / ใใ / ็ฆๅฒก็พๅฎนๅฎค / ใใใฅใฉใซ (@zoey__mai) This is a futuristic update to the classic bob, asserts Moodie: 'It's blunt yet fluid, and often paired with micro-bangs,' he says. The neo bob nods to the '60s and '90s, but with a modern twist, adds Moodie. Thanks to its mirror-shine finish, bold lines, and optional hidden layers, it feels fresh and wearable this summer. Take cue from this cut by Miho Mai. The FitPix View this post on Instagram A post shared by TALIA CARDOSO (@taliacardosoa) Not unlike a classic pixie cut, the fitpix is a practical, unfussy, cropped style, but still has personality, say Buller and Rice โ like this cut on digital creator Talia Cardoso. 'It's short, textured, and doesn't need a whole lot of styling, so it's great if you're active, working out or just prefer to keep things easy,' they add. Buller and Rice advise asking your stylist for plenty of texture while being clear about your preferred length. ' P!nk's recent buzzed crop is close, with a beautiful, delicate texture to it, while Brie Larson at the 2025 AMAs showed how this cut can be styled sharp and clean, yet still be feminine,' say Buller and Rice.

A Shaggy Bob Is Summer's Coolest Hairstyle - Here's How To Style It
From the laidback French bob to the endlessly versatile lob, there seems to be an endless array of bob hairstyles to suit everyone but the shaggy bob is arguably the coolest interpretation of them all. 'The shaggy bob is the perfect fusion of sophistication and ease, it takes the precision of a classic bob and adds a modern, undone texture,' says Jordan Jones, colour director and stylist at Taylor Taylor London in Shoreditch. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE Tosin Johnson, stylist at Afro hair salon SimplyGorgeous, agrees. 'Shaggy bobs are great for getting that for undone glam. They're about edge but also a softness,' Johnson tells ELLE. 'It's giving '70s soul with a modern twist. We love them because they celebrate texture and movement.' Unlike the sleek graduated bob or the retro chic Italian bob, the shaggy bob is a beautiful chaos of natural, lived-in texture, volume and choppy layers. 'What makes it particularly appealing is its relaxed vibe. It's effortlessly cool, yet still polished enough to feel put together, only getting better as it grows out. It's rebellious yet refined, with that subtle rock 'n' roll edge that feels current without trying too hard,' says Jones. Adds Johnson: 'Shaggy bobs are perfect for people who love volume, texture, and a little bit of carefree attitude to their style. When it comes to Afro hair it's best when the hair is ideally stretched or straightened or on a wig/weave.' Thanks to its undone, layered nature, the shaggy bob requires less upkeep than a more precise haircut such as the blunt bob. It's also a versatile chop that can easily be tailored to your hair type and facial features. 'Whether you're looking to soften a square jawline or bring balance to a rounder face, the right placement of layers can completely transform the effect,' says Jones, who often recommends the style to clients who prefer haircuts that are high on impact and low on maintenance. 'It's especially great for those who want movement and volume without a lot of effort.' A great hairstylist will respect and enhance the natural texture of your hair, no matter what the haircut is. There really is no one size fits all approach. 'The key is to customise. For looser curls or waves, we might razor or point-cut to enhance movement. For tighter curls and coils, we cut dry so we can see exactly how the shape falls in real life โ that way, we preserve volume and definition,' shares Johnson, who notes that this hairstyle is truly about working with 'what your hair naturally wants to do'. 'We usually work in sections, carving out layers that frame the face and release the weight. On curls and coils, we go curl by curl to respect the pattern and bounce,' they add. According to Jones, the shaggy style is a game-changer for anyone looking for a bob haircut for thin hair as the light layers add volume and create the illusion of fullness. 'Strategic layering can add volume without sacrificing body. Texturising products and clever cutting techniques also help build the shape without thinning it too much,' he says. For thicker hair, a good shaggy bob can help remove excess bulk. 'Strategically placed longer layers can reduce heaviness without making the style look boxy or over styled,' adds Jones. A great cut should do a majority of the work for you. 'Let the hair live!', concurs Johnson, who recommends a lightweight curl cream by Moroccanoil or Doux mousse to define curls without weighing it down and a diffuser to restore body. ' If you've got tighter Afro curls, a soft twist-out or finger coiling in a few key places can bring extra definition where you want it,' adds Johnson. If your hair is straight, try using a curling wand to introduce movement to the lengths. 'Sea salt sprays or texture mists are also ideal for adding body and definition. The key is to keep the finish relaxed and lived-in,' says Jones, so resist the temptation of doing too much. On finer hair, the combination of mousse and texture spray will deliver lift and volume while diffusing on low speed with a heat-protectant cream helps enhance natural waves and manage volume for thick hair types. Essentially, the shaggy bob appears much more deconstructed, with shorter, choppier layers while a classic layered bob tends to have more blended, longer layers. Most shaggy bobs also fall into the 'bob with fringe' category. 'Where the layered bob offers elegance, the shaggy bob delivers character and a bit of rebellious charm,' says Jones. 3 Bob Haircuts For Fine Hair That Sing Summer
If you've got fine hair, but desperately want to brave the chop and get a bob this summer, we've got some good news - there's plenty of sophisticated options for every texture and style. It's all about finding the right shape for you. The bad news is, not every type of bob haircut will work for thinner hair types. In fact, a bob for fine hair requires completely different considerations to that of fuller heads, so it's important to have a trained eye and expert hand at the helm of your fresh 'do. That being said, when cut and styled well, a bob can be transformative for wispier hair types - not to mention, it makes the ultimate summer refresh. Here, Luke Sawyer, creative director at Taylor Taylor London's Portobello Salon and session stylist Abigail Constanza break down the best bob haircuts for fine hair types to sport this summer. Not to dissimilar to summer's coveted 'snap bob', this clean, statement style is ready-made for finer hair types. Plus, it's already been adopted by the likes of Lily Collins and Carey Mulligan. 'Think ultra-clean lines, subtle graduation and a graphic silhouette that sits just at the jawline, this is all about precision cutting but with a timeless French energy (imagine a modern-day Amรฉlie with sharper edges), but it's evolved for 2025 with more structure and less softness,' says Luke Sawyer, creative director of Taylor Taylor London's Portobello Salon. 'It's best on straight to slightly wavy textures, this look is incredible on oval, square and heart shaped faces. It's definitely a power cut and unapologetically confident! It works beautifully across all hair types when tailored right, but relies on strong perimeter lines to make its statement.' When it comes to styling, a traditional round brush or a set of quality hair straighteners will be your best friend. 'For a polished finish, a sleek blow-dry with a round brush is your go to,' says Sawyer. 'I'd add a drop of serum through the ends and flat iron if needed for that razor-sharp effect. For something more lived-in, mist with a light texturising spray and scrunch slightly for an undone feel.' When it comes to the appointment itself, ask your hairdresser for a blunt, boxy bob with clean lines and minimal layering. 'Make sure they tailor the perimeter to your jawline as a true sculpted bob should enhance your bone structure, not fight it and also don't forget to chat fringe options, a micro fringe can completely transform the look if you're feeling brave.' If you want a bob that veers on soft, as opposed to something dramatic and sharp, introducing subtle layers is an absolute must. 'The airy layered bob is a soft, floaty and full of movement - the anti-blunt bob. Layers are definitely making a comeback and this style offers a lightness for summer without sacrificing shape. It has an almost 70s silhouette but modernised for today with seamless layering and airy texture,' says Sawyer. 'This look is perfect for medium to fine hair that needs a bit more life and a real game-changer for naturally wavy or curly textures. This cut flatters round and longer face shapes especially well, but can be tweaked to suit anyone with the right layering.' When it comes to styling, it really depends on your personal hair texture. 'Diffuse waves or curls with a curl cream, or air dry with a salt spray for a soft beachy texture. The beauty of this cut is that it looks intentional even when air dried, which is ideal for low-maintenance people with a high-style vibe.' Ask your hairdresser for a chin-to-collarbone bob with invisible layers or soft internal layering, he says. 'Emphasise that you want movement rather than volume. It's that effortlessness vibe where you can pretend you just jumped out of bed like that.' A short layered bob has always been chic, and it doesn't look as though its allure is slowing down any time soon. The best layered cut of them all? The famous French bob. This timeless cut is perfect for fine hair with a little bit of wave. The key for summer 2025: adding a soft, bottleneck fringe for even more definition and shape. 'Think classic Parisian cool,' says session stylist Abigail Constanza. 'Chin-length, a little bit cheeky, and paired with soft bottleneck bangs. It's low-maintenance but has real character.' When it comes to your appointment itself, be specific about the length and layers you want. 'Ask for a chin-length bob with minimal layers, textured ends, and bottleneck bangs that taper out into the sides,' she says. 'To style, A little mousse at the root and a diffuser for natural wave works perfectly, or wear it sleek with a glossing serum for that lived-in polish.' If in doubt, this look is effortlessly finished with a generous spritz of texture spray or a scrunch with some lightweight defining mousse.
