Lincoln Tech welding instructor building bridges and relationships
CHICAGO — At a space in Melrose Park, students are hard at work learning to create the metal joints that will help construct everything from bridges, skyscrapers, pipelines, and airplanes and it is a source of great pride for Lincoln Tech instructor Joel Smith. 'It's my job to push them to be that welder they know they can be, because they would settle,' Smith said. Eddie Amaya, who nominated Smith back in September, came through the doors of Lincoln Tech intimidated and with little knowledge about welding, but he soon found a father-like figure in Smith. Read more: Latest Chicago news and headlines 'He is always pushing me. I'll do a bad weld and he'll say 'Just do it again Eddie,' and then I think one time I started crying, but I know it was coming from a good place,' Amaya said. The 30 men and women who are taught by Smith described him the same way, as a teacher who will give students honest and firm feedback, but with a big heart. Smith's father was in the trades and he got interested in welding after talking to an instructor at Lincoln Tech. 'And I remember I was managing a doggy daycare facility, and I went to him, I was like 'You're making $14 an hour? I'm making $9,' and he was like 'Yeah I just went to school and learned to weld and now I got a welding job,' so I honestly give a lot of my credit to a fellow instructor,' Smith said. As soon as he got the job, smith said he knew he also wanted to teach. Smith has now been teaching for five years, taking his students on field trips to make sure they understand the real-life importance of their work. Many of Smith's students will find work welding or even inspecting welds, and after five years and hundreds of students, Smith knows his students are ready for the real world. LATEST CASES: Missing people in Chicagoland 'I don't care what people say about tradespeople or this generation you guys work hard, keep it up break that barrier down I'm sick of tradespeople saying this generation doesn't want to work, you guys show up every day and prove them wrong, continue doing it,' Smith said. To honor Smith as Teacher of the Month, Howard Ankin of Aankin Law presented him with a $1,000 check. Traditionally, the Teacher of the Month check is addressed to the school, but at Smith's request, the money will be donated to Guide Dogs of America, a charity he said is close to his heart. 'We can train an animal to help visually impaired individuals, like c'mon there is no better feeling there,' Smith said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Teacher Surprise Squad Celebrates Jeremy Corbell
ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Each month, four teachers are chosen for Teacher of the Month. All four are awarded $250 sponsored by ExxonMobil and one teacher is surprised in person. This month, Jeremy Corbell of Cavazos Elementary was selected. 'I had no idea what was happening! I thought I was getting called to the principal's office,' said Corbell as he was surprised in person. Jeremy teaches K-5 grade students in P.E. at Cavazos Elementary. 'This is my 6th year as a teacher. I've always known this is where I wanted to be,' said Corbell. Before stepping into the field of primary education, Jeremy had a long career in sales. While dedicating himself to extensive work hours, Corbell was also fathering 3 children. 'It definitely was a good time, but I ultimately wanted a schedule that was similar to my children. I couldn't afford not spending time with my kids,' said Corbell about his transition from sales to education. This inspired Jeremy to go back to school and get his education and teacher's certification. Each day, he motivates the students of Cavazos Elementary to stay active by setting goals and having fun but also prioritizing physical activity. 'We make sure to drive home that physical activity is important for at least 30-60 minutes a day. They understand that and so it will follow them as they get older.' Mr. H has been using jeopardy to help students prep for upcoming tests. 'I picked up that whistle when I was kid. We do a jeopardy review before every test. We divide the kids in half, we put up a board up of questions, we have a scorekeeper, we keep score, we have daily doubles,' he said. 'And so the Jeopardy song got picked up by myself and I have students that picked up the whistle.' 'They are still very eager to learn and they are excited to learn about learning and they are excited about school,' he said. 'It's really a neat age level to be in involved in. They are excited about school and excited about their teacher, yet they are old enough to impart a great deal of education upon them. And they are awesome.' We have been to the Holocaust Museum. We are going to go Cantigny,' he said. 'One of the things about Chicago is that the resources are unbelievable. The city is a great places. At this level the kids are eager and excited. There is a great amount of enthusiasm here, you just got to tap into it.' And it's the ability to spark curiosity in the classroom and out of the classroom that sets him apart. 'Each day is a brand new day. I am a guy who has never been to work. I enjoy my job immensely,' he said. More News, Weather and Headlines at Eric revels from Ankin Law presented Mr. H with a $1,000 check. Mr. H refuses to take credit for the award. February Teacher of the Month: Nicolas Carr
TECUMSEH (KSNT) – Music has long been a passion for Nicolas Carr. When he was a senior in high school at Washburn Rural, he got the opportunity to direct and make music with his friends. It was at the moment he knew he wanted to make this his career. 'So I went to Washburn University and then K-State as well, bachelor's and masters in music education, and I've loved every minute of it,' Carr said. With 20 years of teaching at Shawnee Heights High School under his belt, 17 of which as the assistant director of bands and orchestras, Carr made the switch to his current role three years ago. January Teacher of the Month: Chelsey Davies 'Way back at the beginning I student taught to be a choir director right here in the classroom that I teach in now,' Carr said. 'So, when that job opened up it just seemed like a perfect fit to make that shift and to become a choir director which was my ultimate goal.' While becoming a choir director was his ultimate goal, Shawnee Heights High School Principal Ed West said that the students mean more to him than the job, and that's what makes him a great teacher. 'His main priority is students,' West said. 'As excellent as he is as a content area teacher, choir director in this particular situation, his students are more important to him. And you see that as people come back and visit with him, and the stories that they tell, the number of students that he's still working with outside of school.' For Carr, he said being able to see his students accomplish something they didn't think they could do is what makes the job all worth it. December Teacher of the Month: Jamie Bazil 'We all love our content, that's why we teach it, but it's those relationships you build,' Carr said. 'Seeing a student succeed when they didn't even know they could do that thing. Whatever that is, performing, or being part of a group, it's just so emotionally fulfilling.' Not only is Carr our February Teacher of the Month, but he'll be representing the Shawnee Heights School District for the Kansas Teacher of the Year award. For more local news, click here.
