Teacher Surprise Squad Celebrates Jeremy Corbell

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Each month, four teachers are chosen for Teacher of the Month. All four are awarded $250 sponsored by ExxonMobil and one teacher is surprised in person. This month, Jeremy Corbell of Cavazos Elementary was selected.
'I had no idea what was happening! I thought I was getting called to the principal's office,' said Corbell as he was surprised in person.
Jeremy teaches K-5 grade students in P.E. at Cavazos Elementary.
'This is my 6th year as a teacher. I've always known this is where I wanted to be,' said Corbell.
Before stepping into the field of primary education, Jeremy had a long career in sales. While dedicating himself to extensive work hours, Corbell was also fathering 3 children.
'It definitely was a good time, but I ultimately wanted a schedule that was similar to my children. I couldn't afford not spending time with my kids,' said Corbell about his transition from sales to education.
This inspired Jeremy to go back to school and get his education and teacher's certification.
Each day, he motivates the students of Cavazos Elementary to stay active by setting goals and having fun but also prioritizing physical activity.
'We make sure to drive home that physical activity is important for at least 30-60 minutes a day. They understand that and so it will follow them as they get older.'

2025 Odessa Police Athletic League

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Odessa Police Department hosts the Odessa Police Athletic League yearly to offer kids in the Permian Basin a safe and active summer program. For $100 parents can register their children for a four-week program were children are provided with lunch and a variety of activities. This year children in the program had the opportunity to attend a movie at Cinergy, visit Urban Air, and play a variety of sports such as kickball and volleyball. This program has been around for three decades, and it has transformed the lives of several children and police officers. 'I've probably worked with over 10,000 children in this community over those 30 years, and honestly its the reason why I'm still in police work,' said Jon Foust, a sergeant with OPD. The program also takes volunteers from the community, and teenagers can register as one. For more information visit Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Elderly driver killed in crash at US 87 and Brian Road in Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- An 85-year-old man was killed and a woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in Howard County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened around 3 p.m. on June 3 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 87 and Brian Road. 85-year-old William F. Smith of Big Spring was driving a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta southbound on US 87 when he began slowing to make a left turn onto Brian Road. Preliminary findings indicate Smith failed to yield the right of way at the open intersection and was struck by a northbound 2012 Buick Regal. Smith, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Buick Regal, 38-year-old Chelsey M. Yarbar, also of Big Spring, was taken to Scenic Mountain Medical Center with what officials described as minor injuries. She was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation by Trooper Rains with the Texas Highway Patrol in Big Spring. No further details have been released at this time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
