'Big change': Supercars icon locks in plans for 2026

Lowndes confirmed in March that 2025 would mark the final year of his two-decade partnership with Ford-bound Triple Eight. The veteran has now signed a two-year deal with Team 18, the outfit that General Motors selected to replace Triple Eight as its Supercars homologation team. The 51-year-old will spearhead the Chevrolet Camaro wildcard entry at Supercars endurance races from 2026, mentoring a young rookie driver. Lowndes has competed in a staggering 31 editions of the Bathurst 1000, having won the famed race on seven occasions. "Joining Team 18 was the right move for me, being the new homologation team and my strong relationship with GM," Lowndes said in a statement. "It's going to be a big change - joining a new team after so many years. "But there are a lot of familiar faces in there. "It's an exciting time ahead ... the Supercheap Auto Wildcard program has grown from strength to strength during my time at Triple Eight. The young kids now look to it as a strong pathway to a future in the sport." Team 18 owner Charlie Schwerkolt described the recruitment of Lowndes, who joins David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale at the Melbourne-based team, as "an incredible honour". "To go from starting as a single-car customer entry in 2013, to building a team from the ground up, to now running a wildcard for one of the most legendary names in Supercars, it's a proud moment for every person in our organisation," Schwerkolt said. "We'll be throwing everything at this program. "Our next step is to identify a rising star to pair with Craig, assemble the right crew, and build a program that can challenge at Bathurst and The Bend." Supercars heavyweights stunned in provisional pole race

Anton De Pasquale is threatening to spoil Supercars series leader Broc Feeney's party in Ipswich after claiming provisional pole for the final sprint race. De Pasquale blitzed inaugural Sprint Cup winner Feeney by 0.034 seconds to go fastest in Sunday's qualifying session at Queensland Raceway. The Team 18 driver will have a chance to snare the real deal for the 200km sprint when he rolls out as the last driver to have a solo drive in the top 10 shootout at 11.40am (AEST). Triple Eight wildcard Zach Bates flaunted his quality to go third-fastest, sealing his first shootout appearance on debut. Super2 driver Bates beat out one-time Supercars champions Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki, who qualified fourth and fifth respectively. Feeney, left smarting after a five-second penalty for a false start denied him back-to-back wins on Saturday, is still every chance of upstaging De Pasquale. Should he claim top spot for the 13th time this season, the 22-year-old will net $50,000 in prize money for most poles won. Tickford driver Cam Waters will need a flawless drive and a miracle to mark his 300th race with a podium finish after qualifying in 19th. Waters kicked off this season in Sydney by converting three straight pole positions to three wins, but has since struggled to return to the top spot. The 31-year-old has slumped to fourth in the championship, only claiming four podium finishes since Sydney. Waters, struggling to master the new tyre compounds, had finished 17th and fifth respectively in Saturday's two 120km races. Tickford teammate Thomas Randle did not fare any better on Sunday, qualifying in 23rd. "What do they say? If you don't laugh, you cry," Randle told Fox Sports. "It's been a pretty trying weekend for us." Drivers will return for the top 10 shootout ahead of the final Ipswich race at 3.15pm. RACE 25 QUALIFYING RESULTS: 1. Anton De Pasquale (Team 18) 2. Broc Feeney (Triple Eight Race Engineering) 3. Zach Bates (Triple Eight) 4. Will Brown (Triple Eight) 5. Brodie Kostecki (Dick Johnson Racing) 6. Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United) 7. Ryan Wood (WAU) 8. James Golding (PremiAir Nulon Racing) 9. Cam Hill (Matt Stone Racing) 10. David Reynolds (Team 18)
