Dillon Danis vows to retire Tony Ferguson ahead of GFL matchup

Dillon Danis plans to put the nail in the coffin of Tony Ferguson's MMA career. Danis (2-0), who is a part of GFL's Team New York, takes on Team Los Angeles' Ferguson (25-11) in a lightweight main event bout May 25 at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. In his most recent outing, Ferguson suffered a UFC-record eighth consecutive loss when he was submitted by Michael Chiesa this past August. Danis aims to add to 'El Cucuy's' losing skid. 'I'm going to retire Tony Ferguson and bury 'El Cucuy' in the same grave as his win streak,' Danis told MMA Junkie in a text message Tuesday. Danis was scheduled to face KSI in a 185-pound boxing match, slated to headline Misfits Boxing 21 on March 29 in Manchester, England. However, the bout was scrapped when KSI withdrew due to illness. The controversial jiu-jitsu practitioner hasn't competed since boxing YouTube and WWE star Logan Paul in October 2023 – a fight he lost by disqualification. His last MMA fight came in June 2019 when he submitted Max Humphrey at Bellator 222. While Danis is booked to face Ferguson in May, his in-cage return might come even sooner. In a recent interview on 'The Ariel Helwani Show,' Mike Perry revealed that he said yes to replacing KSI against Danis, but in a Misfits-first MMA fight, which would likely take place in April. 'KSI is out, Dillon Danis wants to fight MMA,' Perry said. 'I'm saying yes, so we have got to see what Mams (Taylor) is coming up with over there in Misfits, and they're changing it completely because he was going to fight KSI in boxing. Looks like the date has changed a little bit but might not be too far away. So I said yes to fighting Dillon Danis in MMA, but they've got to come correct. It's a last-minute call, so if they want to make the fight happen, let's do it.'

Kevin Lee 'in full training' for potential GFL fight vs. Tony Ferguson, doubts Dillon Danis shows up

MIAMI – Kevin Lee has a feeling he'll end up rematching Tony Ferguson in a few weeks' time. Despite the two not having a booked bout, Lee thinks he'll likely get the call to fight 'El Cucuy' since he doesn't see his opponent, Dillon Danis, showing up to their scheduled fight. GFL announced last month that Ferguson and Danis are set to meet in a lightweight bout at the inaugural event in May in Los Angeles. Lee has little faith that fight is happening. 'I don't necessarily see that fight happening,' Lee told MMA Junkie. 'I'm in full training right now. It's Ramadan, so I'm fasting and training at the same time, and yeah, that's the fight I think should happen, especially if they do it in L.A. or New York. But wherever they make the fight happen, I'm ready for it.' Lee and Ferguson fought for the UFC interim lightweight title in 2017. In the UFC 216 main event in Las Vegas, Ferguson submitted Lee to win the belt. Since then, Lee has been wanting to run things back. He fully expects Ferguson to be game for the first GFL event, but can't say the same thing about Danis – which is why he sees his rematch possible. 'I get it. They want to get Tony a win,' Lee said regarding the Ferguson vs. Danis matchup. 'I think that's what it's about, on top of kind of trying to capitalize on Dillon's star. … It seems like Dillon never shows up to fight. He's somebody who keeps his name in the media and does certain things that I don't necessarily condone to keep his name in the media, but he never fights. He never shows up to fight. 'So is that Tony Ferguson fight going to happen? I seriously doubt it. They were saying he's on Team New York. I'm on Team New York, and if that fight falls apart, I think it only makes sense that you make me and Tony again. That's the fight that makes the most sense and the biggest fight GFL can put on.'

NYC mayor's race heats up as Mayor Eric Adams touts decreases in gun violence and Andrew Cuomo spars with Brad Lander

With public safety becoming a key focal point of the New York City mayor's race, Eric Adams lashed out Monday at opponents who he says don't give him credit for making huge inroads in reducing gun violence, implying they are not on "Team New York." "The numbers don't lie" The mayor posed with a high-impact machine gun and eyeballed tables of ghost guns and other weapons confiscated by the NYPD -- 1,000 in just the last two months. He then bragged about historic reductions in crime and slammed opponents who insist the streets are not safe. "We are the safest big city in America. So those who have not read the memo, stop saying our city is in chaos and crisis. It is not. The numbers don't lie," Adams said. Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said shootings for the first two months of this year -- a 21.5% decrease in January and a 20.8% decrease in February -- were the lowest in the city's recorded history. "If you are 'Team New York,' you should be accurate in your assessment and not dump on New York. Lift New York up," Adams said. Andrew Cuomo and Brad Lander exchange barbs Adams' comments came as the mayoral contest continues to heat up. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo talked about public safety as he picked up the endorsement of the 29,000-member electrical workers union, IBEW Local 3. Without naming names, Cuomo slammed opponents like City Comptroller Brad Lander, who at one time called for defunding the police, which Cuomo said has made it difficult to recruit officers and has led to a drastic reduction in troop strength. "They spend over $1 billion in overtime because they cut the number of police. A little common sense. What we should do is go out and hire 5,000 police officers, make the city safe, and it'll cost you half of what you're spending in overtime," Cuomo said. Lander continued to slam Cuomo over the sexual harassment charges that led to his resignation as governor. Lander pointed to a report by the state comptroller that found the Cuomo scandals cost taxpayers $60 million. "One thing he can do is return the $60 million and put it to public safety," Lander said. As CBS News New York's Marcia Kramer reported, it's only fair to point out that of the $60 million, $18 million was spent by the state to defend Cuomo and his top advisors in civil sexual harassment cases. Millions of dollars were spent by State Attorney General Letitia James to hire outside lawyers to investigate the allegations. NYC mayoral race continues to ratchet up in intensity The Democratic primary is still three months away, but Kramer reported the increase in attacks by the candidates is not unexpected. Cuomo led all the polls before he entered the race and so the natural inclination of all the candidates is to try to topple him or at least knock some of his poll numbers down, Kramer reported. Kramer added it's not like Cuomo didn't know what was coming, so that's why he has tried to stay above the fray, adding he has been issuing position paper after position paper day after day on issues he thinks people care about, from public safety to housing to affordable child care. On Monday, Cuomo called for e-bike regulations, including mandatory registration of bikes and e-scooters with the city's Department of Transportation, and license plates so riders can get tickets for road violations.
