EIGHT Kerry players featured as RTE's star-studded line-up pick Sunday Game Team of the Year

THE Sunday Game panel sat down to select their best 15 for the Team of the Year after last night's All-Ireland final. The panel made up of Paul Flynn, Cora Staunton, Tomás Ó Sé, Enda McGinley, Mark McHugh and Ciarán Whelan were given the responsibility of selecting the team following Advertisement 2 The panel had some tough decisions to make, especially in defence 2 The Kerry contingent dominated the team following their 1-26 to 0-19 win over Donegal Eight Enda McGinley: "Shane Ryan gets the nod in a year that goalkeepers took up so much chat at the start of the National League with the change of rules. "People were thinking they were going to be done away with in terms of losing all their ability to do short kickouts. "Goalies like himself have shown their value his ability to kick off left and right foot and being able to find those pockets. The half-back line featured both of Kerry's wing backs in Donegal's Ciarán Moore and Finnbar Roarty were the two players who were singled out by the panel to be unlucky not to make it into the defence of the team. Advertisement Most read in GAA Football The panel were particularly impressed with Roarty who was Man of the Match against Meath in the semi-final. Two-time All-Star Ciarán Whelan praised: "Finnbarr Roarty in corner-back, he had a brilliant year. 'Sad to see him go' - GAA fans emotional seeing Michael D Higgins attend last men's All-Ireland final as President "For a 19-year-old to come in and the experience he showed right throughout the year he slotted into that Donegal team, he was massively influential. Donegal legend Mark McHugh added: "I think he is a shoe-in for young player of the year." Advertisement The midfield "picked itself" as Joe O'Connor partners Michael Langan, one from either side of the All-Ireland finalists. Despite a poor season from the Orchard county with a shock exit against the eventual winners of the Sam Maguire Cup, Conaty had some great individual performances. The full-forward line was "one of the easiest lines to pick" as David Clifford, Michael Murphy and Conor O'Donnell were immense all season. Advertisement Cora Staunton was complimentary of the attackers saying: "David Clifford scored 8-62 in championship, the highest scorer from two-pointers. He's just the greatest of all-time. "Murphy was Donegal's leader throughout. A bit of a quieter game in the final as opposed to the semi-final but he was their top-scorer. "I thought O'Donnell was immense. Man of the Match in the quarter-final, could have been the same in the semi-final. Again today he was one of their top performers."

Manchester City to re-sign goalkeeper James Trafford in £27m deal

Manchester City are set to re-sign goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley in a deal worth £27 million, just two years after the 22-year-old left the Etihad Stadium to join the Clarets. Trafford, a product of City's youth academy, joined Burnley in July 2023 in a transfer that included performance-based add-ons and was valued at up to £19 million. His standout performances last season were instrumental in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League under Scott Parker. He recorded 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship appearances and was named in the division's Team of the Year. Although City included a buy-back clause in the original agreement, the club did not activate it directly. Instead, they exercised matching rights after Newcastle United submitted a £27 million bid for the England youth international, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. 🚨 Manchester City to sign James Trafford from Burnley. Sold at £14m & purchasing for £27m so buy-back cost ~£13m. Activated matching rights on #NUFC offer & 22yo picked #MCFC - 5+1yr contract. Ederson staying, Ortega to go but nothing close @TheAthleticFC — David Ornstein (@David_Ornstein) July 25, 2025 He will become the fourth senior goalkeeper in Pep Guardiola's squad, joining Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli. Trafford is expected to compete with Ederson, who has served as City's first-choice goalkeeper for eight years. Ederson is in the final 12 months of his contract and has recently been linked with Turkish side Galatasaray, though no formal offers have been received. Meanwhile, Ortega's future at the club remains uncertain. Trafford joined City's youth ranks in 2015 but never made a senior appearance for the club. He had loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before establishing himself at Burnley. The goalkeeper is expected to sign a five-year contract with City, with an option to extend by a further year.

"Three Tipp lads, you talk about the recency bias like there would have been two Cork lads and Jake would have been in that earlier this morning. "And because of their performances in the All-Ireland final, both Ronan Maher and John McGrath jumped into that category of being hurlers of the year. They thoroughly deserved it the three of them. Read more on GAA "I will gladly say I think Jake Morris was in that conversation this morning and in the first half when Tipp weren't firing, he was still the one they looked to to bring them forward. "I thought he was brilliant. I think Jake has become selfless in his game the amount of link-up play he does, the amount of dummy runs he does. "He was a goal scorer up to now, he's now become a fulcrum of that Tipp team. He's the new Tipp team. We've spoken about the younger and older lads, he's in that middle category. "And he is the one I'm sure you've identified has serious potential for a number of years. But I think we've seen it, just like the Tipp team he's grown to a stature that he is our hurler of the year this year." The Sunday Game panel struggled to put together their Team of the Year with a unanimous decision almost impossible. The panel understood it was a difficult task at it wasn't going to be perfect with Ursula Jacob accepting there is going to be backlash. The four-time All-Ireland winner with Wexford said: "You can't keep everyone happy, this is just our panel of opinions. I'm sure there will lots of aggro and text messages when we come off air but sure look." Shefflin wanted to take no responsibility for the Team of the Year selection despite taking the decision for Hurler of the Year into his hands. The 11-time All-Star joked: "I wish my vote got a stronger preference in our meeting. I was outside at a meeting for some of it."

Azzedine Ounahi Set for Girona Move

Azzedine Ounahi is on the verge of joining Girona in a permanent move from Olympique de Marseille. The Moroccan international has agreed terms with the Spanish side, with only Marseille's final approval pending. The 25-year-old caught Girona's attention after an impressive loan spell at Panathinaikos, where he scored five goals and registered seven assists in 37 appearances. He was voted the Greek club's Player of the Season and earned a spot in the league's Team of the Year. Girona, preparing for Champions League football, submitted an €8 million offer – matching Marseille's initial valuation after the French club briefly raised their asking price to €12 million. Ounahi, who rose to prominence during Morocco's run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, had joined Marseille in January 2023 from Angers. However, his time in Ligue 1 was disrupted by injuries and inconsistency. Marseille have already left him out of their pre-season squad, along with three other African players: Cameroon duo Faris Moumbagna and Simon Ngapandouetnbu, and Ivorian player Bamo Meïté. Ounahi, who rose through the ranks of Morocco's Mohammed VI Academy, is now set to relaunch his career in La Liga. Tags: Azzedine OunahiFC BarcelonaGirona

Michigan football gets trolled at ESPYs by host Shane Gillis

Shane Gillis has jokes for Ohio State and Michigan 😅 The annual ESPY Awards (think equivalent to the Oscars for acting) took place on ESPN on Wednesday night for the sports world, and it was another entertaining night where things like "Team of the Year" and "Male Athlete of the Year" were handed out. The Ohio State football team was nominated for the "Team of the Year" for its College Football Playoff national championship run, but that award instead went to the Philadelphia Eagles for winning the Super Bowl. But not all was lost for Buckeye fans because anytime an unbiased observer dunks on Michigan, it's worth the price in gold. And that's exactly what happened when host Shane Gillis went on a sidebar to criticize the Wolverines for the alleged cheating surrounding the Connor Stalions sign-stealing allegations. While taking a bit of a stab at Ohio State and Will Howard by congratulating them for winning the national championship, but who also "lost to Michigan," Gillis then went on a quick rant about the That Team Up North. 'Michigan, who didn't cheat this time. Beat them fair and square,' Gillis said. He then went a little further. "Are we ever going to hold accountable (talking of Michigan)? Yeah, whatever, they're allowed to cheat, no repercussions.' Joking or not, the runway for the advanced sign-stealing allegations appears to finally be wearing out. The NCAA Committee on Infractions had a hearing with Michigan on June 6 and 7, and that would mean that we should hear a final ruling by September 9 -- just in time for the start of the football season. We are all still waiting. Contact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes and opinion.
