Liam Payne Previewed New Music for AJ McLean Before His Death: ‘It Was a Great Body of Work'

AJ McLean is one of the few people who heard some of the music Liam Payne was working on prior to his death in October 2024. The Backstreet Boys member developed a close rapport with the One Direction singer while working on the Netflix series Building the Band. In a recent interview with Today, McLean detailed the songs Payne previewed for him that remain unreleased. 'He was just an absolute sweetheart, witty, funny. He sent me an unreleased body of work to get my opinion on it — and I never put that out there,' McLean said. 'I thought that was really sweet that he would entrust someone that he's still learning about to give their opinion.' He added, 'I thought it was a great body of work. And I hope that the world and that the fans get to hear it somewhere down the road. It's beautiful, beautiful music.' Another boyband member, 'NSYNC's JC Chasez, served as a collaborator on the song. 'This album literally is that whole last year for me. How I was feeling on those days is each record. It was a snapshot of that day,' Payne said prior to the single release. 'So you can even help someone through a tough time, help somebody celebrate something. That's really what I want to get across in this record and that's the best part I guess about my job.' 'Teardrops' ultimately became Payne's final music release. The musician died on Oct. 16 at the age of 31 from injuries sustained after falling from the balcony of his hotel room. Less than two weeks after his death, the musician Sam Pounds announced and later postponed plans to release their collaboration 'Do No Wrong,' saying, 'It's not the time yet.' Next week's premiere of Making the Band will mark Payne's first posthumous appearance. Netflix previously paused production on the series given his involvement as a judge. The show will be released in three parts this month. The first four episodes will be available on July 9, with three more dropping on July 16, and the final set on July 23. 'I had known him prior to the show, but not as close as we got,' McLean, who hosts the show, said. 'Obviously, we're with each other 12 to 14 hour days for about five weeks, you do learn a lot about someone.' Earlier this year, McLean told Rolling Stone he 'immediately connected' with Payne 'on not only a music level but a human level,' adding, 'We both were living a parallel life. There was a lot of funny boy-band jabs that we would take at each other. He really had a quick wit to him — that nice, dry, British humor.' McLean described Payne as 'well spoken, very supportive, rigorously honest, in a compassionate way,' adding that he 'always spoke from the heart.' Last week, Payne's sister Ruth Gibbins celebrated his performance in Building the Band after the series trailer was released. 'I didn't know whether to share this but it felt weird when I've raved about Liam's work and achievements for the last 15 years,' she wrote on Instagram. 'Im heartbroken he never got to see how great he is in this show. He knew he had done a good job, we all told him this when we were at filming, but watching it back, wow.' She added: 'You're a star Liam, you always were and always will be. There are a range of emotions I felt watching this, but one of the main ones is immeasurable pride, always. Miss you more every day.' Best of Rolling Stone Sly and the Family Stone: 20 Essential Songs The 50 Greatest Eminem Songs All 274 of Taylor Swift's Songs, Ranked

Liam Payne's Friend Speaks Out Amid Negligent Homicide Charge

Originally appeared on E! Online Roger Nores is sharing insight into his friendship with Liam Payne. After the Argentinian prosecutors charged the businessman with negligent homicide in relation to the One Direction singer's October death, he detailed his relationship with the late 31-year-old. 'We would both offer a lot of emotional support,' Nores told Rolling Stone in an article published Feb. 11, noting that he 'never' used drugs and pursued sober activities with Payne. 'That was the core of our relationship. I was going through a lot of stuff with my girlfriend and family. We'd talk a lot about our relationships and how to go [about] them and how we were feeling.' In December, Argentina's prosecutor confirmed that Nores was charged with negligent homicide and accused of 'failing to comply with his duties of care, assistance and aid,' and 'abandoning' Payne with knowledge of his substance abuse issues. But the energy mogul—who has sued Payne's dad Geoff Payne for defamation following a witness statement he made to Argentine authorities—pushed back on the responsibility his charges imply. 'I wasn't a doctor, I wasn't a psychiatrist, I wasn't his legal guardian. I never had any control of that. I wasn't his manager; I wasn't his father. You can only do so much.' Meanwhile, Payne's estate responded to the defamation suit on behalf of his father in a statement obtained by People, '[Geoff] denies, in the strongest possible terms, that he has defamed or otherwise caused any harm.' Payne died following a 40-foot fall from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel on Oct. 16. At the time of his death, he had cocaine, alcohol, and a prescription antidepressant in his system, according to a toxicology report obtained by E! News. In addition to Nores, three other people have been charged in connection to the death of the 'Teardrops' singer—who was one-fifth of One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik—per Argentina's prosecutor. CasaSur Palermo's manager, as well as the hotel's receptionist were similarly charged with negligent homicide. Meanwhile, two additional hotel employees were charged with supplying the 'Strip That Down' singer with cocaine. (E! News has been unable to reach the defendants for comment as it's unclear if they have retained counsel.) Prior to his death, Payne had been candid about his struggles with substance and alcohol abuse—which he's said began amid the height of One Direction's fame. 'When we were in the band, the best way to secure us because of how big it got was to just lock us in our rooms,' Liam explained on the The Diary of a CEO podcast in 2021. 'Of course, what's in the room? Mini-bar. So, at a certain point, I thought, 'Well I'm going to have a party for one.'' Liam Payne's girlfriend reveals why she left Argentina in emotional first interview since his death

In her first interview since his passing, Liam Payne's girlfriend Kate Cassidy revealed the reason she left Argentina days before the former One Direction star's death. Payne died aged 31 after falling from a third-story balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024. Two days before the singer's death, Cassidy, 25, traveled back to her home in Miami, Florida, prompting speculation that the pair, who began dating in October 2022, had broken up. Speaking to The Sun, Cassidy debunked the rumors, claiming she went home to look after their rescue dog, Nala. 'Originally, we thought we were only going to be in Argentina for about a week, give or take, a little less, a little more. After two weeks, I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility, we had our dog,' she said. 'Obviously, I never would've thought this event would've occurred. I never would've thought this would've happened.' Elsewhere in the interview, Cassidy remembered the moment she received the devastating news that Payne had died. 'I was in our home with our dog, scrolling TikTok and one of Liam's friends called me,' she said. 'I didn't believe it at first. I thought it was just a rumor. Or something that somebody made up just to get views. Then instantly I just had a bad feeling in my gut. I was like, 'Why would somebody make this up? Is this true? 'And I feel like I just completely blacked out,' she added. 'When I officially found the news out to be true, I felt numb. I tried to call him. I called pretty much everybody. 'I remember pacing around the house — poor Nala (their dog) thought I was trying to play, she kept jumping up at me. I didn't sleep at all that night,' she said. On January 9, Payne's medical cause of death was confirmed by Dr Roberto Victor Cohen as 'polytrauma,' meaning he'd sustained multiple traumatic injuries. A preliminary toxicology report also found 'multiple substances' in his system, including 'pink cocaine,' when he died. According to the National Institutes of Health, pink cocaine is a recreational drug that typically combines methamphetamine, ketamine, and MDMA. However, a statement released by the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office in Argentina on Payne's official toxicology report only mentioned traces of cocaine, prescription antidepressants, and alcohol being found in his system. Five people have been charged in connection to the music icon's death, CasaSur Palermo hotel manager Gilda Martin, receptionist Esteban Grassi, and Payne's friend Roger Nores have all been charged with manslaughter. CasaSur Palermo hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz have both been charged for supplying cocaine. the 'Teardrops' singer was honored at the 2025 Grammys in the show's annual In Memoriam video tribute. Footage of Payne with his other One Direction bandmates — Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson — waving to a mob of fans in the street, was shown as Coldplay's Chris Martin performed 'All My Love.'
