IIT Guwahati student appointed as Commonwealth youth peace ambassador
Sukanya Sonowal, a final-year B Tech student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN). She will serve as the Lead for Communications and Public Relations for the 2025–2027 is a youth-led initiative working across 56 Commonwealth nations to promote peace and counter violent extremism through dialogue, community service, and appointment follows a three-stage selection process that assessed candidates on their commitment to peacebuilding, knowledge of Commonwealth values, and leadership experience.
Originally from Lakhimpur district in Assam, Sonowal has built a strong background in communication and youth the past four years, she has contributed to various outreach activities at IIT Guwahati, including serving on the media and branding team of the institute's techno-management festival, STEM OUTREACH TO GLOBAL PEACEBUILDINGBeyond campus, Sonowal co-founded 'STEMvibe - STEM for Viksit Bharat Empowerment,' a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting STEM education. The platform has reached over 3,000 students across also leads "The Integral Cup," a mathematics competition for undergraduates that saw over 2,500 participants from top Indian colleges in its first experience in handling large-scale communication projects and building partnerships with global firms such as Optiver, Qube Research & Technologies, and Jane Street played a role in her to the announcement, IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal said the institute is proud of her achievement and confident that she will make a valuable contribution on the global about her new role, Sonowal said, 'I am honoured to represent India and IIT Guwahati.
