Hyderabad Metro announces TUTEM app to enhance safety of passengers, especially women

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Thursday announced that a new technological solution called TUTEM or Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility has been developed with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to help women travellers reach their destination safely. According to HMRL managing director N V S Reddy, BITS Pilani- Hyderabad Campus, in collaboration with the HMRL, Hyderabad Police, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Bombay, has developed the app that will soon be made available to Hyderabad residents. 'While the majority of the journey happens through Metro Rail, this app is designed to cover pre- and post-metro travel as well—including walking, two-wheeler rides, cars, buses, or auto-rickshaws—to ensure a safe journey from home to the final destination,' he explained at a user workshop held at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus.. The app consists of two components: a Driver App and a User App and includes measures for the safe commute of public transport travellers, especially women, Reddy said. He said that in case women travellers feel unsafe at any point during the journey, the app offers facilities to promptly alert the police control centre, and their family members and relatives. Reddy shared that various amenities have been incorporated into TUTEM to ensure seamless travel to and from Metro stations. He emphasised that this initiative of Metro Rail is a step towards realising Chief Minister Revanth Reddy 's vision regarding public safety. BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor Prof V Ram Gopal Rao expressed that several features have been incorporated into the TUTEM app to ensure the safety of women even during late-night hours. He added that their technical experts are striving to extend this initiative not just in Hyderabad but to other Indian cities in the future. ADB representative Josephine Aquino, BITS Pilani Campus Director Professor Soumyo Mukherjee, IIT Bombay's Prof. Avijit Majhi, and BITS Pilani's Professor Prashanth Sahu participated in this event.

HYDERABAD: A new mobile app — Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility (TUTEM) — is set to launch soon in Hyderabad, aiming to ensure safer and more seamless travel, particularly for women. Developed by BITS Pilani-Hyderabad in collaboration with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), Hyderabad Police, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Bombay, the initiative is backed by financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Announcing the app, HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy said the move is part of broader efforts to build a secure and inclusive urban transit system. He emphasised that the app aligns with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's vision of prioritising public safety. The app includes a Driver App and a User App, integrating options like walking, auto-rickshaws, cars and buses for seamless travel to and from Metro stations. It features emergency alerts to notify police and family members if a user feels unsafe. Reddy highlighted HMRL's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, transporting nearly 5 lakh commuters daily for the past seven years.

The technology solution is being developed with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and joint collaboration of BITS Pilani-Hyderabad, Hyderabad Police, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and HMR, and as per Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's directions on public safety, he said. At a user workshop held at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus, Mr. Reddy stated that public transportation is the only solution to the increasingly complex traffic problems. He claimed that TUTEM app will significantly help women travellers reach their destination safely. New innovations In case women travellers feel unsafe at any point during the journey, the app offers facilities to promptly alert the police control centre, and their family members and relatives, he explained. The MD also highlighted the importance of addressing socio-economic problems through engineering and technological solutions and expressed HMR's commitment to new innovations. HMR, which transports nearly half a million people daily to their destinations, has been offering environmental-friendly travel facilities to the city for the past seven years, he added. BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor V. Ram Gopal Rao said that several features have been incorporated into the TUTEM app for women's safety even during late-night hours. Technical experts are striving to extend the initiative to cities in the future. ADB representative Josephine Aquino, BITS Pilani campus director Soumyo Mukherjee, IIT Bombay's Avijit Majhi, and BITS Pilani's Prashanth Sahu participated in the event, said a press release.
