Hyderabad Metro announces TUTEM app to enhance safety of passengers, especially women
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Thursday announced that a new technological solution called TUTEM or Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility has been developed with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to help women travellers reach their destination safely.
According to HMRL managing director N V S Reddy, BITS Pilani- Hyderabad Campus, in collaboration with the HMRL, Hyderabad Police, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Bombay, has developed the app that will soon be made available to Hyderabad residents.
'While the majority of the journey happens through Metro Rail, this app is designed to cover pre- and post-metro travel as well—including walking, two-wheeler rides, cars, buses, or auto-rickshaws—to ensure a safe journey from home to the final destination,' he explained at a user workshop held at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus..
The app consists of two components: a Driver App and a User App and includes measures for the safe commute of public transport travellers, especially women, Reddy said.
He said that in case women travellers feel unsafe at any point during the journey, the app offers facilities to promptly alert the police control centre, and their family members and relatives.
Reddy shared that various amenities have been incorporated into TUTEM to ensure seamless travel to and from Metro stations.
He emphasised that this initiative of Metro Rail is a step towards realising Chief Minister Revanth Reddy 's vision regarding public safety.
BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor Prof V Ram Gopal Rao expressed that several features have been incorporated into the TUTEM app to ensure the safety of women even during late-night hours. He added that their technical experts are striving to extend this initiative not just in Hyderabad but to other Indian cities in the future.
