'Areas near 7 Pahang ECRL stations to benefit from accelerated industrial growth'
KUANTAN: The East Coast Rail Link, the country's mega rail project, will steer Pahang into a key investment, industrial, and logistics hub in the east coast through a specially-tailored development at each of the seven stations in the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the ECRL stations will not only enhance connectivity but accelerate industrial growth at the vicinity of the stations based on the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD). "The Bentong station which connects the Bentong Industrial Area on an area measuring 177ha will focus on heavy and medium industries. "Meanwhile, the Temerloh station located not far from an existing industrial area in the district will emphasise on various industries, including furniture with the potential to serve as a logistics hub for the central region. "The Maran station has the potential to be developed into a mineral collection centre catering for bauxite, gold, silica, and iron ore. Due to its strategic location within a palm oil production area, the station will focus on palm oil processing and packaging industry. "The Paya Besar station will focus on high-impact industrial developments largely due to the presence of the Pahang Technology Park, Gambang Halal Park and Halal Food Complex nearby," he said during the question-and-answer session at the Pahang Assembly sitting here today. Wan Rosdy was replying to a question from appointed assemblyman Rizal Jamin on the plans by the state government to develop industrial parks and areas along the 224km ECRL alignment and the types of potential industries. Wan Rosdy said the Kota SAS Station will serve as a new urban growth centre, with affordable housing, modern commercial and business centres, and built about 500m from the Sultan Ahmad Shah Administrative Centre, which is the new administrative hub. "The Kuantan City Port station will serve as a major logistics hub connecting the ECRL to Kuantan Port through an additional spur line. "The station will support the development of industrial sites such as Gebeng, MCKIP(Malaysia China Kuantan Industrial Park) and MCKILP(Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Logistics Park) focusing on heavy industries including petrochemicals, oil and gas, and large-scale manufacturing. "The Cherating Station will support investment growth in coastal tourism, hospitality, and ecotourism, with the potential to become a catalyst for local economic development through tourism in Cherating," he said. In response to a supplementary question from Rizal on plans to introduce new housing schemes near the stations, Wan Rosdy said Pahang's first high-rise affordable housing project - Pangsapuri Pahangku - has been launched near the Bentong station. "In the future, residents living in Bentong will be able to take up jobs in Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan due to the shorter travel time. The next location for the 2.4ha affordable housing project will either be near the Temerloh or Paya Besar ECRL station," he said. Replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Andansura Rabu (PN-Beserah) if the Cherating station will be built near the soon-to-be built Kuantan International Airport, Wan Rosdy replied in the affirmative. Pahang has seven stations — Cherating and KotaSAS will serve for passengers only, while Kuantan Port City, Paya Besar, Maran, Temerloh, and Bentong will handle both passenger and cargo traffic. The 665km-long ECRL project, which spans four states — Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor — is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Balancing the books and the battlefield: Pakistan's fiscal strategy for FY2025–26—III
With an eye on long-term innovation, Rs?79?billion is dedicated to the IT sector. Major developments include the Karachi IT Park, Islamabad Technology Park, and a national freelancing platform. The government also aims to scale up IT exports, which have already grown 21 percent year-on-year. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will benefit from increased access to low-cost financing and enhanced risk coverage. Over Rs 300 billion has already been disbursed to 95,000 businesses, with the government planning to double this outreach through new policy tools and financial instruments. Remittances—Pakistan's most stable source of foreign exchange—rose to USD 38.3 billion last year, a remarkable 27 percent year-on-year increase. Enhanced services for overseas Pakistanis, such as secure digital transfers, diaspora awards, and legal protections, are helping cement trust and sustain these vital inflows. These remittances serve as a bulwark against external imbalances and are instrumental in maintaining the State Bank's foreign exchange reserves, which currently stand at a reassuring USD?14 billion. The export target for FY2025–26 is set at USD 35.3 billion—a 7.4 percent increase—while imports are expected to grow to USD?65.2?billion. This will result in a trade deficit of nearly USD 30 billion, which the government plans to offset through robust remittance inflows and foreign direct investment. Exporters, especially in textiles, IT, and rice, will benefit from zero-rated tax regimes, tariff rationalization, and simplified refund systems. A newly proposed Tariff Reform Package aims to reduce maximum duty rates to 15 percent within four years, enhancing global competitiveness and easing the burden on domestic producers. Nuclear 'centre of excellence' could create 1,000 jobs
Plans to build a Nuclear and Clean Energy Technology Park in Gloucestershire have been approved, the park would be built next to the former nuclear power station at Berkeley, which was shut down in hope the park will attract world leading companies that specialise in nuclear research and manager, Gerry Hughes, said over the next 10 years the site would "become a real centre of excellence in the nuclear sector". Mr Hughes said they wanted to "create jobs that benefit local people"."We will be delivering approximately 1,000 new jobs on this site," he said."Some of the businesses we're talking to have developed technology that is genuinely game changing globally. "That's the scale and the importance of this site into the future."He also said many of the existing buildings on the site would be demolished."Most of the buildings that exist here were built in the 1950s and 1960s, so are at the end of their life. "So it's pretty much a complete redevelopment of the site." The promise of new jobs was welcomed by Berkeley town councillor, Liz Ashton."It will generate lots of high level tech jobs which is what we need in the area. "We had so many brilliant jobs when the power station was active. Lots of the those jobs have gone now, but it's going to be a new generation of workers coming in."But Ms Ashton raised concerns about the impact of the development on transport links."It's a big concern, linked with the development (of planned houses) at Sharpness."There are lots of problems regarding the motorway junctions. They really need to revive a good public transport system, so people won't be coming in their cars." Director of the Gloucestershire County Council economic growth board, Ian Mean, said the park could bring a major boost to the region."It's got huge potential. These will be very skilled jobs. Nuclear is in the DNA of this area, lots of people worked in nuclear, they still do. I think it's a huge opportunity", he said.A consultation is running online until 18 July, with an application for outline planning permission expected to be submitted in August.
