Stormers v Cardiff Live: Team news, kick-off time and TV details
Cardiff aim to seal a United Rugby Championship play-off spot for the first time as they take on the Stormers in Cape Town. The Blue and Blacks head into the final game of the season just outside the top eight - ninth by virtue of wins and points difference - but know a win on Friday evening would secure a play-off place. Matt Sherratt makes five changes from the side that lost to the Bulls in Pretoria last week. No. 8 Taulupe Faletau, lock Teddy Williams, prop Danny Southworth and half-backs Aled Davies and Callum Sheedy all start. Landmark win, unwanted history & play-off hopes hit
History was made for right and wrong reasons while play-off hopes took a blow in the penultimate round of the United Rugby Championship. Scarlets claimed a first URC win in South Africa with victory over Lions but Dragons' worst season was confirmed in Durban. Further losses also saw Cardiff plummet from fifth to ninth - one place outside the play-offs - and ended Ospreys' hopes of reaching the knock-out matches. So what is there for Welsh regions to play for in the final week of the URC? Scarlets and Ospreys seek clarity before signing new deal Dragons and Cardiff sign new WRU deal 'We'd definitely come back' - English rugby's big day out in Cardiff Scarlets backed-up league wins over Ospreys, Dragons and Leinster with victory in Johannesburg. They are now sixth but are still not guaranteed a play-off place. They face fourth-placed Sharks in Durban and have not won four league games in a row since winning the title in 2017. But they have the league's top scorer in Ioan Lloyd while Blair Murray's double means only Munster's Tom Farrell has scored more tries this season. Head coach Dwayne Peel said: "I'm massively proud of the lads after that result {at Lions]. "The big thing for us this season is we wanted to compete and we are doing it right up until the last game. "It's not done yet. Next week will be a massive challenge but we'll make sure we are ready to go and see how many points we can get." They could be helped by the fact rivals Munster and Benetton meet each other in their final game. Edinburgh host Ulster while Cardiff visit Stormers. Could Cardiff's hopes of reaching the play-offs for the first time come down to a missed pass between Gabriel Hamer-Webb and Cam Winnett? Cardiff knew their best hope of claiming the single point at Bulls that could be enough to secure a top-eight finish would be from scoring tries. But they fell agonisingly short of a bonus, despite second-half tries from Alex Mann, Teddy Williams and Hamer-Webb in the 45-21 loss. Earlier Hamer-Webb had beaten three defenders but failed to find Winnett with what looked like being a scoring pass. "We're not going to review that game in huge detail," said head coach Matt Sherratt. "We've got a six-day turnaround so the boys have had two days off to rest and recover because if we're not emotionally and physically right [for Stormers] then the technical and tactical stuff won't matter." Key for Cardiff will be Taulupe Faletau, instrumental in the late comeback as a replacement against Bulls, while Alun Lawrence and Teddy Williams lead the league for tackles. Ospreys pulled off a minor miracle to scrape into the play-offs last season but a poor start to the campaign and recent defeats in Welsh derbies meant they were struggling to qualify even before a 29-10 loss at Sharks. They end their season at Lions in a game with nothing to play for other than building for next season when head coach Mark Jones starts his first campaign in charge. "We've got the main ingredients to do well," said Jones. "The scoreboard [against Sharks] feels painful when you look at the effort we put in but we didn't execute those big moments. "But when you've got incredible work rate, good fitness and players who care for the team then we can fix the other things with coaching and time on the training pitch." Dragons head to the "toughest away fixture in the league", according to Sherratt, needing a point to avoid equalling the worst URC league season. It is already the lowest tally for Dragons - or Newport - in a one-division version of the league's 24-year history. But they are still equal with the Zebre team of 2021-22 who claimed just nine points after losing 17 of 18 games. "We have a lot of young guys getting opportunities who are not quite ready yet, but that is where we are at," said Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia. "They have to keep learning and growing but I'm excited about the DNA of the group." "With the last couple of years Wales have been going through, he is a true warrior and really deserves his spot." Springboks captain Siya Koli on Jac Morgan's selection for the British & Irish Lions.

Bulls 45-21 Cardiff Rugby: Late rally not enough as visitors' URC play-off hopes suffer blow
Cardiff saw their United Rugby Championship play-off hopes suffer a blow at the hands of the Bulls, despite a late rally in Pretoria. The hosts took advantage of an error-strewn first half from Matt Sherratt's side, running in four tries courtesy of Harold Vorster, Wilco Louw, Canan Moodie and Cameron Hanekom to take full control of the contest Sebastian de Klerk then completed a second-half brace to extend the hosts' lead, which never looked like being overtaken, even in the face of a late Cardiff fightback. Alex Mann crashed over shortly after the interval, while late scores from Teddy Williams and Gabe Hamer-Webb brought the visitors on the brink of a bonus point, only to fall short on what was a largely chastening afternoon. Cardiff will now likely need to take something from their second match in South Africa if they are to book their place in the top eight, with the Stormers lying in wait next week. After an impressive win at home to Munster last time out, this was something of a reality check for Sherratt's men, who were eased onto the back foot more or less from the off here. Johan Goosen got the hosts up and running with a penalty after just four minutes, which arrived on the back of an early demonstration of the home side's superiority in the setpiece. Three minutes later, Bulls had the first try. Johann Grobbelaar's offload opened up some space for Moodie, whose dinked kick found Vorster, and he raced away to score. The withdrawal of Goosen through injury might have perhaps put a pin in some of the early jubilation of the hosts, but the Bulls only tightened their grip on the contest as the first half wore on. First, Louw muscled his way over for a second, before Willie le Roux got the better of Hamer-Webb to get on the end of an up-and-over and offload for Moonie, who then hit the gas to gallop his way over the line. Cardiff were second-best in every department and a fourth try duly arrived just before the break, with the Bulls pack once again at the heart of things. Hanekoum picked up on the edge of the scrum, and the Cardiff defence just evaporated to allow him a free path over the whitewash. It was a try that would have left Sherratt furious, but Cardiff's defence proved just as fragile in the second half. Another box kick from Le Roux was scooped up by de Klerk just three minutes after the interval, and he then burst away for another converted score. Cardiff, to their credit did respond, with Mann just about doing enough to stay in play and ground in the corner just a few moments later. With the game itself gone, a bonus point would have probably been the most pressing part of Cardiff's brief at this point, but when de Klerk slid over for his second of the game, even that task felt a tall order. But the Bulls, perhaps sensing the job was done, did take their foot off the gas a little in the latter stages, and Cardiff duly took advantage. Teddy Williams was the first to go over eight minutes from time, before Hamer-Webb finished off a fine move three minutes later. However, a fourth try never arrived, and Cardiff leaving Loftus Versfeld empty-handed, and knowing a big improvement against the Stormers on Friday will be needed.
