Telangana Forensic Lab is now ‘examiner of digital evidence'

The Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL) was designated as a 'Government Examiner of Electronic Evidence' under Section 79A of the Information Technology Act 2000, by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, on Wednesday. With this notification, the NABL-accredited TGFSL is now empowered to examine, analyse, and certify digital evidence. This development not only enhances the admissibility of such evidence in courts across the country but also boosts the lab's legal authority and institutional credibility. 'The lab's Digital Forensics Division handles an average of 50 cases a month involving diverse digital storage formats and devices that include damaged hard drives and mobile phones. This wing has contributed significantly to several high-profile convictions in Telangana,' said Director General of TGFSL Shikha Goel. Notably, TGFSL has also set a national benchmark by prioritising forensic reports in POCSO cases, in accordance with Supreme Court directions.

Omega Hospital CEO Dr. Ch Namrata was arrested by Raidurgam police while purchasing cocaine from a Mumbai-based supplier late on Friday. The police seized over 50 grams of the contraband along with cash. The accused Dr. Ch. Namrata was arrested near her residence in Shaikpet while accepting the contraband. She was arrested along with supplier Balakrishna, and was remanded to judicial custody on Friday night. Following a tip-off and technical intelligence, the police reached the spot. 'After the supplier reached Hyderabad, he made a call to Namrata and she sent him the delivery location,' an official from the Raidurgam police said. The police said that a sample was collected and sent to the Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis. The supplier is in custody and the police are looking for another person, said to be a local peddler, involved in the trade.

DNA evidence nails Yakutpura youth in German tourist rape case

Hyderabad: Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory has confirmed, through DNA fingerprinting, that the 25-year-old youth from Yakutpura sexually assaulted a German tourist in March. The DNA extracted from samples found on the survivor and her clothes matched with that of the culprit, firmly establishing his role in the deputy commissioner of police (Maheshwaram Zone) D Sunitha Reddy said, "We received the FSL report confirming that the youth is the accused in the case. A chargesheet was filed, and the German woman's statement in the court was recorded along with those of other witnesses. Video statements were also documented."The rape occurred on March 31 night at Mamidipally on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The woman and her male friend, both from Germany, were offered a ride by a group travelling in a Swift Dzire car. The driver, along with five others including minors, approached the tourists while they were en route to a vegetable market. After building trust, the driver offered to take them making stops at various locations, the Yakutpura resident drove the car toward Mamidipally. At one point, he asked the others, including the woman's male friend, to get down and take photographs. He then took the woman about 100 metres ahead to an isolated spot and allegedly raped her in the vehicle after threatening the assault, the woman managed to jump out of the moving vehicle and reunite with her friend. The incident was reported to police by her Indian friend residing in Meerpet. A case was registered under the Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The car driver was arrested the next day at 4 victim has since returned to Germany. Investigators revealed that the culprit, who had previously worked in Dubai and spoke fluent English, used his familiarity with foreign tourists to lure the victims.
