Telangana Forensic Lab is now ‘examiner of digital evidence'
The Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL) was designated as a 'Government Examiner of Electronic Evidence' under Section 79A of the Information Technology Act 2000, by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, on Wednesday.
With this notification, the NABL-accredited TGFSL is now empowered to examine, analyse, and certify digital evidence. This development not only enhances the admissibility of such evidence in courts across the country but also boosts the lab's legal authority and institutional credibility.
'The lab's Digital Forensics Division handles an average of 50 cases a month involving diverse digital storage formats and devices that include damaged hard drives and mobile phones. This wing has contributed significantly to several high-profile convictions in Telangana,' said Director General of TGFSL Shikha Goel.
Notably, TGFSL has also set a national benchmark by prioritising forensic reports in POCSO cases, in accordance with Supreme Court directions.

3 sentenced to life in jail for gang-raping minor
Meerut: A POCSO court in Sambhal district sentenced three men to life imprisonment for gang raping a 16-year-old girl on Jan 23, 2023. ADGC Narendra Yadav said that the victim's family was working in their field at the time of the incident. "Around noon, a man approached the minor and lured her to a secluded spot where two of his accomplices were already present. The trio, all in their 20s and residents, took turns to rape her. They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone," he said. The victim managed to escape and narrated her ordeal to her family, who then filed a police complaint. Based on their statement, police registered a case under IPC section 376D ( gang rape ), 506 (criminal intimidation), and section 5/6 of the POCSO Act, and conducted an investigation. During the trial, the defence argued that the medical examination did not reveal any injury marks on the victim's private parts or body, and therefore, sexual assault could not have occurred. However, the court said that the absence of injury to the rape victim does not lead to the conclusion that the accused did not commit forcible sexual intercourse. The court further held that even without external injuries, the oral testimony of prosecutrix—that she was subjected to rape—cannot be disregarded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Participate in Arthritis Clinical Trials from Home Clinical Trials from Home | Search Ads Undo Based on evidence presented in the court and the chargesheet filed by the police, Additional District and Sessions Judge/Special Judge POCSO Act Awadhesh Kumar Singh sentenced the three men to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. Man held for raping minor daughter in Punjab's Hoshiarpur
An 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father in a village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, police said on Friday. According to Mukerian SHO Joginder Singh, the matter came to light after the girl's mother lodged a complaint. The woman told police that she got married to a 40-year-old man in 2011, and the couple had two children -- a son and a daughter. She alleged that her husband used to frequently quarrel with her and their children, and she was currently residing at her maternal home. On March 22, her husband took the daughter to his village. When the mother spoke to her over the phone later, the girl revealed that her father regularly beat her and sexually assaulted her whenever the grandparents were not present at home, she alleged. Singh said the accused has been arrested and a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered. Investigations are underway, the police official said.
