Oman: TRA temporarily suspends mobile number portability

Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced a temporary suspension of the mobile number portability service across all telecommunications providers in Oman, effective Monday, August 18. The decision aims to facilitate the migration to the new Central Number Portability System, a move expected to improve service quality, advance digital transformation, and boost competition within the telecom sector. The TRA confirmed that the suspension is necessary to ensure a smooth transition to the upgraded system, which will allow customers to retain their numbers while enjoying better network services in the future. TRA advised users to complete any pending number portability requests before the suspension date to avoid delays once the new system is in place. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Hongkongers may soon be limited to 3 prepaid SIM cards per service provider

Hong Kong authorities have proposed reducing the maximum number of prepaid SIM cards a user can register with a telecoms provider from 10 to just three, and criminalising those who misuse them. A paper submitted to the Legislative Council on Tuesday detailed the proposed amendments to the Telecommunications Ordinance, which are expected to be scrutinised by the legislature next year to strengthen efforts against rising phone scams in the city. Improper use of SIM cards registered under another person's information without authorisation may result in a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 (US$3,184) fine or imprisonment for up to one year. 'The government believes that [the proposed measures] can effectively combat fraudulent activities involving prepaid SIM cards, and [better protect] telecommunications service users from potential harm,' authorities said in the paper. It said that the proposed offences would target illegal activities involving the provision of personal information to register SIM cards on behalf of others, as well as the sale or purchase of already registered ones. Individuals found to possess 10 or more SIM cards registered under other people's information without authorisation or reasonable justification will also be 'presumed' to intend to use such cards for criminal activities.
