2 Nepali nationals arrested at Mumbai airport for using fake UAE job permits

Mumbai: Two Nepali nationals allegedly attempting to travel to the UAE using counterfeit foreign employment permits (FEP), purportedly issued by Nepal Embassy in New Delhi, were held at the city's international airport on Wednesday. Since May 26, Sahar police have arrested a total 18 Nepali nationals, including Dipendra Yadav (22) and Raj Sah Teli (20), and investigated the issuance of fake FEPs purportedly issued by the Nepali Embassy for flights from Mumbai airport. "Since air tickets are 50% cheaper in India compared to Nepal, job aspirants to Gulf countries travel to India to catch their international flights," a Sahar police officer said. Yadav and Teli told Sahar police that each paid Rs 4 lakh to an agent to secure jobs as AC technicians in the UAE, along with visas and air tickets. They duo they entered India through the Bihar border, took a flight from Patna to Mumbai, and were about to depart for the UAE when they were stopped by immigration officers. "Since air tickets are 50% cheaper in India compared to Nepal, job aspirants to Gulf countries travel to India to catch their international flights," a Sahar police officer said. Immigration officer Rajendra Pal (36) said: "We suspected something was amiss with the FEPs submitted by the two men who were flying to the UAE for jobs as AC technicians. Due to earlier such cases, we got in touch with the Nepali Embassy. We uploaded the FEPs on the Nepali Embassy site and found out that they were fake." Apart from the fake FEPs, all their other documents were genuine, said Sahar police. Yadav and Teli are currently in police custody.

Mandatory sickle cell testing for students urged by Dr Vinky Rughwani

Nagpur: Dr. Vinky Rughwani, a paediatrician and President of the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society of India, called for mandatory Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) testing for all students enrolling in undergraduate programmes. Speaking ahead of World Sickle Cell Day on June 19, Dr Rughwani emphasised the need for widespread screening to curb the spread of this debilitating genetic disorder, which causes severe pain and requires lifelong medical care. SCD, inherited when both parents carry the sickle cell trait, is prevalent in communities like Buddhist, Teli, Mahar, Kunbi, and tribal populations, particularly in regions like Vidarbha. Symptoms include chronic pain in the limbs, abdomen, and joints, low haemoglobin levels, and the need for frequent blood transfusions. Dr Rughwani highlighted that while a bone marrow transplant—costing Rs 14–15 lakh—is the only cure, it is expensive and risky, making prevention critical. The central govt's 'Sickle Cell Free India' campaign already screened lakhs of individuals, but Dr Rughwani advocates for mandatory testing at the university level to identify carriers early and prevent disease transmission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch xu hướng AUD/USD? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "Early screening can save future generations from this preventable condition," he said. In a proactive step, the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society, in collaboration with Sankalp India Foundation, launched a screening programme across Maharashtra's govt hospitals and medical colleges. The initiative tests all pregnant women in their first trimester using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). If a woman is a carrier of the sickle cell trait or Thalassemia Minor, her partner is tested, he said. If both are carriers, Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) at 12 weeks of pregnancy is recommended to prevent the birth of an affected child. This project, already operational in Vidarbha, is expanding statewide. Dr Rughwani also noted that SCD is now covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2017, granting affected individuals educational reservations and access to govt schemes. Recent reforms in the Disability Certification Act simplified obtaining disability certificates, further supporting patients. To manage SCD, patients rely on lifelong medications like Hydroxyurea and Folic Acid, alongside regular blood tests and sonographies. Dr Rughwani stressed that testing before marriage is crucial, as carriers often lead normal lives unaware of their status. "A simple test can prevent a lifetime of suffering," he urged.

Asind man ends life over alleged loan harassment

Bhilwara: The death of 62-year-old Ladulal Teli, father-in-law of former Asind Pradhan Laxmi Devi Sahu, has been revealed as a suicide allegedly driven by harassment from moneylenders. Teli, a resident of Marvo Ka Kheda village, allegedly consumed poison on May 24 and succumbed to his condition during treatment at Bhilwara's Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on May 27. The case took a turn when, following the completion of fortnight-long death rituals, the family claimed to discover receipts of registered letters sent by Teli to the President of India, Rajasthan Chief Minister, local BJP MLA Jabbar Singh Sankhla and local administrative officials, detailing allegations of harassment through excessive interest charges by moneylenders. These letters are now being treated as suicide notes. Kanhaiyalal Sahu, the deceased's son, has filed an FIR naming several accused, including retired teacher Chandmal Mewada (80) and others. According to Sahu, his father had borrowed money from 10-15 individuals for business purposes and, despite repaying the principal amount, was trapped in escalating debt due to exorbitant interest rates. However, one of the accused, Tarachand Mewada (42), has denied these allegations, suggesting internal family disputes as the actual cause of the suicide. He maintained that he shared a close family relationship with Teli and questioned the authenticity of the suicide notes. Deputy SP Om Prakash Solanki said an FIR under BNS section 108 fo has been registered. TNN

Sudi community demands EBC status, greater political representation

Patna: Ahead of assembly elections, people from Sudi community on Sunday demanded that their caste be included in the extremely backward classes (EBCs) bloc and they be also given greater political representation. Sudi is currently under the backward class (BC). People of Sudi community and the lawmakers from the caste made this demand while participating in 'Sudi Adhikar' mahasammelan at the Bapu Sabhagar here. Ramchandra Purbey, Ram Prakash Mahto, Sameer Kumar Mahaseth and Kedar Prasad from the RJD, Arun Shankar Prasad and a few others from the BJP, and a former JMM MLA from Godda in Jharkhand Suraj Mandal were also present at the programme. They said that in 1990, there were 12 MLAs from the 'vaishya (trader)' caste group, including nine of the Sudi caste, and Mandal himself used to be the leader of the JMM legislature party. However, their figures began to fall sharply afterwards. The speakers on the occasion insisted that the inclusion of their caste in the EBC category would help aspirants from among them in getting elected to the single seats in the three-tier Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) bodies, zila parishads, as well as in the urban local bodies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Dumbest Things Middle-Class Americans Waste Money On FinanceBuzz Undo They also pointed out that people of their caste were affected by two factors. "The market reforms and online marketing and home delivery of goods have hit our traditional business practices. To add to it, our political representation in the state assembly and legislative council has also fallen drastically over the last three decades," former JD(U) MLA Amarnath Gami from Hayaghat in Darbhanga district said. "In the past, people of the trader caste had representation in significant numbers, and those belonging to the Sudi caste among them used to be greater. Today, there are only three lawmakers from the Sudi caste, two in the state assembly and one in the legislative council," BJP MLA Arun Shankar Prasad from Khajauli in Madhubani district said. Speakers said that traditionally the 'vaishya (trader)' caste included people of Sudi, Teli, Kanu and Kalwar groups, and all were put in the BC category. However, in 2015, the Teli, Kanu and Tamoli were split from it and put in the EBC category under the Nitish Kumar govt. "No one govt should be blamed for leaving out the Sudi caste from inclusion in the EBC group. We will have to make our sustained collective struggle for getting our caste included in the EBC list," Prasad said.
