We thank Mr Tan Siak Hee for his letter '
Why must construction of public bridge be stopped for sports events? ' (July 29).
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has called for a tender to design and construct a bridge connecting Marina Centre to Bay East Garden. Targeted for completion by 2029, it will provide pedestrians and cyclists direct connectivity between the city and East Coast.
While specific works along the waterfront promenade will be paused to ensure public safety in the lead-up to or during key events held in and around the Marina Channel where large-scale preparation works and crowds are expected, the construction works along the other segments of the bridge can continue and will not be affected. For the annual F1 race, the temporary suspension of works along the promenade fronting the F1 Village is crucial for a safe and effective set-up of event infrastructure and operations around the Marina Channel. Given the large number of visitors expected in the area, a temporary pause of works for this segment of the bridge will facilitate a smoother and safer pedestrian flow during the race period.
The appointed contractor will continue to work on other segments of the bridge to ensure its timely completion.
