Not car or house, Jackie Shroff got a toilet as gift after becoming Bollywood star

Veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff , who rose to fame in the 1980s, has often spoken about his modest beginnings in Mumbai's Teen Batti area. Despite becoming a star early in his career with films like Hero (1983) and Teri Meherbaniyan (1985), Jackie continued to live in the same chawl where he grew up. At a time when he had already become a recognizable face in the film industry, his neighbors in the chawl decided to honor his success in a rather unconventional way — by gifting him a personal toilet. A Unique Gift After Stardom During an interview with Filmfare, Jackie recounted how, after achieving success in cinema, he was given access to a private washroom in the chawl. The locality had only three common washrooms shared by around 30 residents. As filmmakers and industry colleagues started visiting him at home, they often had to wait in line to use the shared facilities. This didn't sit well with the other residents, who felt it wasn't right for a public figure like Jackie, or his guests, to stand in queue. Understanding the growing inconvenience, the residents offered Jackie exclusive use of one washroom. Although he initially declined, saying he and his friends were fine using the common toilets, they insisted and secured it with a lock for his personal use. Jackie mentioned that at the time, even having a cupboard in the house was a big deal, highlighting how small things carried great value in those days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo Still Connected to His Past Even after decades in the industry and dozens of successful films to his name — including Parinda, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Rangeela, and Border — Jackie has remained deeply attached to his roots. He frequently visits his old home in Teen Batti and cherishes the memories from those early days. In a conversation on Vickey Lalwani's YouTube channel, Jackie revealed that he has been trying to rent the room where he spent his childhood. However, the landlord has refused to lease it back to him. Jackie offered to pay the same amount as the current tenants but said the landlord has continued to resist the idea, possibly due to concerns that Jackie might keep it permanently. Jackie's Long Career and Grounded Persona From being a street-smart youngster to becoming one of Bollywood's most dependable actors, Jackie Shroff has appeared in an array of films across multiple languages. Known for his versatile roles and earthy charm, he has taken on both leading and supporting characters in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Konkani, and Punjabi films. Beyond acting, he is also known for his environmental advocacy. Even after all the fame and success, Jackie's simplicity stands out. His story about being gifted a toilet isn't just a quirky anecdote — it reflects the deep bond he shares with his community and his unpretentious attitude toward fame.

Jackie Shroff was gifted a toilet in his chawl when he became a star: ‘There were shared washrooms, producers would stand in queue to use them'

Jackie Shroff has been an actor since the 1980s but one can safely say that even after he first tasted stardom in the 1980s, he wasn't blinded by the glamour of Bollywood. After Jackie had a few hits under his belt in the 1980s, he continued to live in a chawl in Mumbai'sTeen Batti area as he grew up in the same chawl. With his continued success in the movies in those days, his neighbours and friends in the chawl gifted him a private washroom as the chawl only had common washrooms that were used by everyone. Recalling the incident, Jackie told Filmfare, 'I got this film, I didn't have a cupboard. Cupboard came later, first the suit came. And when the cupboard came, the entire chawl had assembled to see the cupboard. It was that kind of place and time. I learnt the value of things there. There were three washrooms, and after I became an actor they gave me one washroom.' Jackie Shroff shared that there were three washrooms for 30 people in the chawl and yet, they decided to gift him one so he didn't have to stand in a queue. 'There were 30 people and three washrooms. After I became an actor, producers and directors would come to meet me in that chawl. Whenever they had to use the washroom, they had to stand in line. The chawl people didn't like it. So they told me, 'You have become such a star. We don't like it when you or your friends stand in queue to use the washroom. We are gifting you the washroom.' I told them I didn't need it and my friends didn't have an issue standing in queue. But, they insisted. The washroom used to have a lock on it,' he shared. 'I remember my mom had put up the poser of Shiva Ka Insaaf.' This was his sixth film after Swami Dada, Hero, Andar Baahar, Yudh and Teri Meherbaniyan. In another interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Jackie recently shared that he wants to rent out the room where he grew up but the landlord of the chawl is not allowing him to do so. 'I am trying, but they are not giving it back to me. He (The landlord) thinks that if he gives it to me then… I am like, 'bro, I won't run away with it'. This guy is not giving it to me. I told him that whatever money you are getting as rent of my old room… four people live there now, I told him that I will pay what those four people are paying. But he doesn't want to,' he said.

Poonam Dhillon Opens Up About Life After Divorce And Navigating Bollywood As A Single Mother

Mumbai: Veteran actress Poonam Dhillon spoke about her journey as a divorced woman in the film industry. In a candid conversation with ANI, the actress shared her thoughts on how life changed after parting ways with her ex-husband, filmmaker Ashok Thakeria. Poonam Dhillon married Ashok in 1988 and later divorced him in 1997. They have two children together, Anmol and Paloma, and the actress has always remained focused on raising them. Looking back, Poonam said she was "fearful" of how people might treat her after the divorce, especially in an industry where personal matters often become public talk. "In any industry, in any place, in any situation, how you get treated is based on how you behave. So I was very fearful that I'd be upset if my friends or their husbands started treating me differently now that I'm divorced, or if the men started looking at me and, you know, treating me differently," Dhillon told ANI. "But touch wood, I was really lucky and blessed that nobody changed their attitude or started making indecent proposals or insinuating things. I mean, there may have been one or two scattered incidents, but that showed their character, not mine. And that's true in any profession. Whether you're single, divorced, or married, those few suspect characters would still behave like that. But by and large, I didn't have to face that. And my whole world was so focused on my two kids," she added. Poonam, who married at a young age, also reflected on her decision. She explained how her busy career and sheltered upbringing gave her little opportunity to meet people or understand relationships deeply. "Well, I think as actresses, what happens is we live a very protected life. We don't meet too many people. We start shooting in the morning and come back at night. Day after day, at least in my days, it was like almost 30 days a month or outdoors. You were not meeting any people. The people your age, either whom you're working with, were much senior to you or...," Dhillon shared. On her relationship with ex-husband Thakeria, she added, "My ex-husband is a very nice person. But two nice people do not necessarily make a good couple, you know. Upbringings are different, your values are different, your interests are different." On the work front, Dhillon is best known for her 1979 film Noorie. She also worked in Red Rose, Dard, Romance, Sohni Mahiwal, Teri Meherbaniyan, Samundar, Karma, Naam, and Maalamaal. Poonam made a special appearance in Judaai. She also made a mark on TV and was seen as a contestant on Season 3 of Bigg Boss, which aired in 2009. The veteran actor played the lead role in the serial Ekk Nayi Pehchaan.

So when I was planning my whole thing, I said, I need to name my company, suggest some Prochi (Badshah) suggested vanity, besides all the other names which we were working on, and I thought that was a very good name. And today it's become a generic name for what a make-up van is aayi ki nahi (vanity hasn't come)..vanity idhar laga dena (park vanity here)..I said that was my company name. You could say make-up van idhar laga dena (park here). But today they are called vanities."
