Operation Sindoor: Army mobilises additional forces for border areas, calls up reserve forces
Amid escalating tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, the Indian military establishment has actively begun large-scale mobilisation of additional forces to the border, including its reserve Territorial Army, to ensure full strength in the event of a contingency. In a notification Friday, the Ministry of Defence announced the activation of 14 of 32 infantry battalions of the Territorial Army (TA) for deployment across the country until February 2028. It is learnt that the move marks a key step towards additional reinforcement of troops all across to ensure heightened operational preparedness. In such situations, TA personnel step in for regular forces in performing various static duties and assist in the maintenance of essential services. They also perform internal security duties, help civil authorities and provide escorts for the transportation of stores and equipment. The government's notification invoked Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948 to empower the Army Chief to exercise powers to call up all officers and enrolled personnel of the TA to provide essential guard or support and supplement regular forces. A regular TA battalion has about 750 personnel. It comprises part-time volunteers, who support the regular Army according to emerging requirements. In normal circumstances, only some personnel are on active duty, or 'embodied', at a time. The others, who are called 'disembodied personnel', are employed in other professions — following recent orders, the TA directorate will take action to embody them as well with available funds in the budget. Sources told The Indian Express that additional reinforcement of troops in key border areas has already taken place over the past few weeks, and more battalions are set to be mobilised to various locations. Additional transport modes will be organised for these troops, they said. According to sources, leaves of officers and personnel in the armed forces have also been curtailed although no recall notice has been issued yet for those on leave. Army personnel have been told to proceed on leave only under exceptional circumstances. Besides, all short-term courses in the military have been put on hold for now.

PM Modi meets groups of armed forces veterans
New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): Amid the rising tension between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a group of armed forces veterans on Friday and had an extensive interaction on various issues related to the current situation. The group included former Air Force, Army, and Navy Chiefs and other veterans who have extensively served the country. Earlier today, the Central Government empowered the Chief of Army Staff to call out 'every office and every enrolled person' of the Territorial Army on active duty amid escalating tensions with Pakistan. This decision came under the power conferred Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948. 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948, the Central Government empowers Chief of the Army Staff to exercise the powers under that rule to call out every officer and every enrolled person of the Territorial Army to provide for essential guard or to be embodied for the purpose of supporting or supplementing the regular army to the extent,' the notification from Ministry of Defence stated. Pakistan on Thursday night launched a series of coordinated drone and missile attacks along India's western border, targeting regions in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. According to Indian defense officials, the attacks were largely intercepted by India's air defense systems, including the S-400 missile defense system, preventing significant damage. This comes after India conducted Operation Sindoor earlier this week, which targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 tourists on April 22. The situation remains volatile, with international calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. (ANI)

The central government has empowered the Army Chief to call out "every officer and every enrolled person" of the Territorial Army (TA) to provide for essential guard or to be embodied to support or supplement the regular Army. The move comes in the wake of the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan. The Indian Army, on the intervening night of May 8 and May 9, successfully repelled and responded to multiple drone attacks by Pakistan along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. A day prior to that, the Indian Armed Forces, under Operation Sindoor, had carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam. The notification, dated May 6, said that the order will remain in force for three years with effect from February 10, 2025 to February 9, 2028. "In exercise of the powers conferred by Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948, the Central Government empowers Chief of the Army Staff to exercise the powers under that rule to call out every officer and every enrolled person of the Territorial Army to provide for essential guard or to be embodied for the purpose of supporting or supplementing the regular army," reads the notification issued by the Ministry of Defence's Department of Military Affairs. The government notification also said, "out of the existing 32 Infantry Battalions (Territorial Army), embodiment of 14 Infantry Battalions (Territorial Army) for deployment in the areas of Southern Command, Eastern Command, Western Command, Central Command, Northern Command, South Western Command, Andaman and Nicobar Command and Army Training Command (ARTRAC)". The TA, raised on October 9, 1949, completed 75 years last year and has served the nation in times of war, and in humanitarian and environmental protection works through its eventful journey over the decades. In recognition of nation-building efforts and contributions made during war or conflicts, numerous individuals have been honoured with gallantry as well as distinguished service awards in the TA, a PTI report said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday carried out a comprehensive review of the national security scenario with the top military leadership, a day after Pakistan's attempts to target Indian military installations were repelled. Every aspect of the evolving security situation was discussed in the meeting, it is learnt, the PTI report said. The meeting was attended by Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
