Analyst Offers Revealing Take on Browns' Second-Round Pick
Analyst Offers Revealing Take on Browns' Second-Round Pick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns selected UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger with the No. 33 overall pick after also going defense with their first pick, regardless of the team's pressing need for offensive playmakers. Advertisement However, with the uncertain future of starting linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, it was a pick necessitated by immediate need. Cleveland insider Terry Pluto believes it was the right move and that Schwesinger could make an immediate impact. 'He could be … special right away: That's what I heard about Carson Schwesinger, the team's second-round pick from UCLA," Pluto wrote. "The Browns believe he can start immediately at middle linebacker. He quickly picks up the defensive schemes. They love his speed. They believe he is as advanced at this early stage as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah during his rookie season." Schwesinger only had four missed tackles in all of 2024. Of all 47 FBS players who posted at least 100 tackles, his four missed were the fewest of all of them. Advertisement He could be an immediate help for a Browns defense that missed a ton of tackles last season, especially if JOK remains sidelined for an extended period. The Browns are clearly focused on their quarterback issues this offseason, and rightfully so. But the special attention general manager Andrew Berry paid to the defense this offseason could pay dividends early in 2025. Especially with the extension of star pass rusher Myles Garrett on the books. Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett will have a lot of responsibility this season.
Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett will have a lot of responsibility this season. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns have one of the best defensive players in the league in Myles Garrett, and he could have an even bigger role after his four-year, $160 million extension with the team back in March. Advertisement In an interview last week, Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said, "with great power comes great responsibility" when talking about the team's defensive superstar. On a recent episode of the Terry's Talkin' podcast with Terry Pluto, he explained what he thought this Spider-Man reference meant. "I don't think he means so much leadership," Pluto said. "I mean, at this point, Myles' personality is not going to change a whole lot. This is what you got, but that ... he thinks that Myles is set to have his best year... (Schwartz) said he thought Myles would respond with his best season ever with the contract and all that." Garrett has been one of the best players in the league on either side of the ball the past several seasons, and his contract extension is going to be yet another motivation for him to be even better. This past season, the 29-year-old edge rusher finished with 14.5 sacks, as well as leading the NFL in tackles for loss with 22. As a result, he was named First Team All-Pro for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Advertisement It will be hard for him to improve on a season like this, but if there is anyone that can do it, it is Garrett. … and yes, that would be amazing. Myles Garrett Predicts ‘My Best Season Ever' as $160 Million Browns Star
Myles Garrett Predicts 'My Best Season Ever' as $160 Million Browns Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Can we speak frankly about the Cleveland Browns' best player, Myles Garrett? Yes, he should play a bigger role for the franchise after being given his four-year, $160 million extension with the team back in March. Advertisement Yes, as a leader he should be here for OTAs and be the first guy in the building and the last guy out. And yes, when Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz says, "With great power comes great responsibility" when talking about the team's defensive superstar. ... he shouldn't require the media (or the Browns) to have to soften the phrasing as if the Spider-Man reference is anything other than a mandate asking for the aforementioned. While we certainly respect the views of long-time Browns insider Terry Pluto, who insists the Spider-Man reference isn't "so much leadership'' ... What else is there? Advertisement More sacks? More tackles for loss? Last season, the 29-year-old edge rusher finished with 14.5 sacks, as well as leading the NFL in tackles for loss with 22. As a result, he was named First Team All-Pro for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Said Pluto: "Myles' personality is not going to change a whole lot. This is what you got ... (Schwartz) said he thought Myles would respond with his best season ever with the contract and all that." Aha. Now we're onto something ... because this week, Garrett himself is saying that very thing. 'I look forward to having my best season for sure, and I think it's trending that way,' Garrett said. 'Been really good, and I think everything's pointed in that direction.' Advertisement Well, not everything. Remember, Garrett launched into the offseason by demanding a trade because he believed the Browns lacked a Super Bowl path. And that really hasn't changed just because he signed the biggest deal for a defensive player in NFL history at $40 million per year. But ... now it's football time. "Best season'' time. 'The day I stepped forth here at this facility, with this organization, I've had an opportunity to have a platform and to set a standard,' Garrett said. 'And I've got to continue to be the leader for this team and set that standard.'
