Road chiefs to trial new way of entering retail park in North Wales seaside town
Road chiefs want to trial a new way of entering one of the region's most popular retail parks. Parc Prestatyn was opened back in 2013 and includes retailers like Tesco Extra, Marks & Spencer, and TK Maxx. It has two entrances and exits but most traffic from the centre of the town is directed towards the gateway off the high street. Denbighshire council currently has £3m from UK Government to spend on improving the town centre and as part of this it is looking at re-directing that traffic to ease congestion on the high street. A seven day trial will start on Monday. A spokesperson for Denbighshire council said: "Following feedback received from the Prestatyn High Street improvement scheme consultation, we will be trialling a new way of getting into the retail park. "Between 18 and 24 August 2025 visitors driving to the retail park will turn onto Nant Hall Road instead of down the High Street to help alleviate congestion on the High Street. Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now "Vehicles travelling to Parc Prestatyn from the B5120 (and Penisadre Road) will be directed down Nant Hall Road (illustrated in green below). This is different from the current directed route via High Street and Bridge Road (illustrated in red below)." They added: "This is not a mandatory trial so no Traffic Regulation Order or Temporary Traffic Regulation Order will be needed. Findings from the trial will be shared in the autumn." The aims of the £3m regeneration fund are to make public areas look and feel nicer, make it easier to access the town centre from key locations such as the retail park, railway station and bus station, improve signage around the town so people can find their way around more easily and encourage greater tourism and investment. Feedback from the traffic trial will be revealed this October. The estimated timescale for completion of the project is October 2027.

MS helps cycling and song event to raise funds for choir
John Griffiths, MS for Newport East, teamed up with the City of Newport Male Voice Choir for its 'Spin and Sing' fundraiser at Tesco Extra in Spytty. The event, which raised £473 for the choir combined live singing and a cycling challenge. (Image: Submitted) Mr Griffiths said: 'I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and supported the Spin and Sing fundraiser. "The City of Newport Male Choir, led by Mark, Sarah and others, were in fantastic voice all day. They were entertaining shoppers with well-known songs, including a bit of Tom Jones, that really lifted spirits. "I was equally impressed by their willingness to jump on the bikes and help with our fitness challenge!' The event was made possible thanks to Newport Live and Momentwm, who provided the bikes, and Danielle Powell, community champion at Spytty Tesco, who helped make the event happen. (Image: Submitted) Mark Main, chairman of the choir said: 'It was a great effort to all those involved raising valuable funds for the choir. "We had a great day raising the profile of the choir and hopefully may also have got a few new choristers, as there was interest from several individuals talking to us. "We all had a wonderful time providing entertainment to the shoppers and everyone had a go on the bicycles. 'Our thanks go to John, the other councillors and supporters who gave up time on a Sunday to support the choir at this event." The fundraiser also marked a key moment in Mr Griffiths' Active Newport initiative, which was launched to encourage people to get active in ways which suit them. He said: 'One of the most powerful messages to come from the Active Newport conference last year was that being active isn't just about playing competitive sport. It can include joining a choir, dancing, or getting involved in community fitness events like this. 'Spin and Sing was a perfect example of how rewarding taking part in community activities and getting moving can be.'

Man stole £634 worth of goods from Tesco — but told to repay just £400
A PROLIFIC thief stole £634 of items from Tesco Extra — but an Isle of Wight magistrate told him to repay just £400 of it as compensation. Warren John Russell, of High Street, Ventnor, admitted stealing from the Brading Road, Ryde, store on May 18. He appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (July 29). Around 10.15am, a staff member recognised Russell, known as a habitual thief, taking various items off shelves and placing them in a trolley. Russell, who had placed £634 worth of electrical items and perfumes in the trolley, wheeled it straight out the store without paying, said Lauren McConnell, prosecuting. READ MORE: Prolific Island shoplifter Warren Russell jailed after breaching court order Shopkeepers' menace with horrendous criminal record back in jail Shoplifter with record of 231 convictions tells judge who jailed him "Cheers mate!" None of the items were recovered. Jobless Russell, who has "served a number of prison sentences," appeared before the bench with a record of 75 convictions for a staggering 243 offences — 165 of them for theft. He was handed a criminal behaviour order (CBO) by the police to prevent him from shoplifting, but was jailed for eight months in October last year for flouting it soon after it was issued. Russell was jailed again for further offences, this time for ten months, at the Isle of Wight Crown Court, on July 4, which he is currently serving. These included more shoplifting and another breach of the CBO. Russell, who is due to be released from prison in October, stole from Tesco during a "drugs relapse," said his solicitor, Michael McGoldrick. In light of Russell also owing the court £3,500 in outstanding fines, compensation, surcharges and costs, magistrates decided to impose a reduced compensation order of £400.

IKEA to offer click and collect service at Tesco Ayr as Swedish giant makes move into town
The Swedish firm has joined forces with Tesco Extra, in Ayr, to offer home improvement enthusiasts a break from travelling to Glasgow to pick up their flat-pack goods. IKEA has teamed up with Tesco to help take some of the pain out of DIY. The Swedish firm has joined forces with Tesco Extra, in Ayr, to offer home improvement enthusiasts the chance to pick up their goods nearer to home. Those who purchase goods from Ikea's stores can save on the petrol mileage - and pick up their gear from a secure lock-up on Whitletts Road - if plans are approved. It's all part of a planning application, lodged with South Ayrshire Council, seeking permission for IKEA 'Pick-Up' Lockers at Tesco Extra, Whitletts Road. It's designed to create a more 'accessible shopping experience' for IKEA customers. A supporting statement said: 'In response to IKEA's growing market demand and the popularity of online retail, IKEA has partnered with Tesco to allow IKEA orders to be collected from within Tesco car parks, creating a more accessible shopping experience for its customers. 'There has been a mobile pick-up point operating at the site for IKEA collections over recent months. The pick-up point has proved successful, and the proposals aim to provide a permanent, secure and attractive service for customers, with items available for collection at any time.' The proposed pick-up lockers will be located to the west of the Tesco Ayr car park, positioned on an existing area of hardstanding which is currently used for 12 car parking spaces. The positioning of the pick-up lockers will have 'minimal impact' on the operation of the existing access routes, according to the application. The planning statement continues: 'The lockers will be a contemporary design, with the colours consistent with the IKEA brand (i.e. blue and yellow) to assist customers in identifying the location of the lockers. 'The varying sizes of lockers allows the facility to accommodate a range of order from home accessories and homewares to furniture.' If approved, then integrated LED lighting and an overhead canopy will ensure customers can safely access their goods. Customers will be able to collect their order once they receive a 6-digit code which will open the appropriate locker. The statement continues: 'Online sales have increased across the IKEA business and so it is necessary to extend its Click & Collect services to meet such demand. 'The lockers build on the existing partnership between IKEA and Tesco, which has seen over 100 mobile pick-up points launch at Tesco stores across the UK. 'While the mobile pick-up points allow products to be collected during certain time windows, with the new lockers, items can be picked up at any time, providing more flexibility and improved accessibility for customers.' The statement adds: 'The proposals will enable IKEA to meet their growing market demand via locally accessible means and make efficient use of space within the Tesco Extra car park.' The proposals are listed as 'pending consideration' on South Ayrshire Council's online planning portal and a decision on them is expected in August.
