Date set for closure of popular supermarket as Tesco to move on to site

An official closing date has been announced for a popular North Yorkshire store. Supermarket chain Booths revealed that it would be closing its Ripon store for the final time on Sunday, July 20, at 4pm. It was confirmed earlier this month that the well-known shop would close after 16 years in the city and be replaced by a Tesco shop. No official date has been set when Tesco will open its store in Ripon - but the news of Booths' closure led to sadness from shoppers. Booths in Ripon (Image: GOOGLE MAPS) In a statement on Monday (June 30), a spokesperson for Booths said: "Your Booths Ripon store closes for the final time on Sunday, July 20 at 4pm. "Closing any Booths store is always a difficult decision, and we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to our colleagues and customers for their support over the years. "The store will be open as usual until closure, and after this, we'd love to welcome you to any of our other Booths stores across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire." This statement follows Ripon BID thanking Booths for its "long-standing investment" in the city and expressing its "delight" at having a Tesco store in the future. A spokesperson for the retail group previously said: "Ripon BID extends its sincere thanks to Booths for their long-standing investment and valued contribution to our city. Their presence has been an important part of Ripon's retail landscape. "At the same time, we welcome the news that leading global retailer Tesco has acquired the site. "This significant investment demonstrates confidence in Ripon's continued growth and vitality. "We look forward to building a strong working relationship with Tesco and supporting their successful integration into the local community." Alongside the news of Tesco buying the Booths site, Next opened in Ripon in May, while M&S has just reopened its recently extended store. The Ripon BID spokesperson added: "Ripon continues to thrive as a vibrant destination for both national retailers and independent businesses. "The recent arrivals of Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Next, and the expansion of M&S, alongside a flourishing scene of independent shops and cafés, reflect the city's strong commercial appeal and resilient economy. "Tesco's decision to invest in Ripon is a clear endorsement of our city's potential and marks another positive step in its ongoing development."
