Tesla Opens Doors in India with Futuristic Model Y and Charging Plans

Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with initial availability in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Tesla has taken a significant step toward its mission of accelerating the shift to sustainable energy by opening its first Tesla Experience Center in Mumbai. The center marks a new chapter in India's automotive landscape, offering customers a hands-on opportunity to engage with Tesla's products and technology. It is designed to serve as an educational and experiential hub, allowing potential buyers to explore Tesla's innovations and understand its commitment to a cleaner future. As part of this launch, Tesla has confirmed that the redesigned Model Y will be available in India. The electric vehicle, which was the world's best-selling EV in both 2023 and 2024, will be introduced in two variants: the rear-wheel drive and the long range rear-wheel drive. Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with initial availability in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The updated Model Y offers a refined combination of performance, safety, and design. It features a top speed of 201 kilometers per hour, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 5.6 seconds, and provides a range of up to 622 kilometers under the WLTP standard. The vehicle includes over 2,130 liters of cargo space and accommodates up to five passengers, making it suitable for both urban and long-distance travel. Prices start at INR 59,89,000. The new design includes a futuristic front lightbar and a tailgate inspired by Tesla's Cybertruck and Cybercab models, giving the Model Y a unique and modern appearance. Indian customers will also be able to customise their vehicles through the Tesla Design Studio, set to launch on July 15, 2025. Tesla's expansion in India also includes developing a comprehensive charging network. The company will soon unveil its first indoor hybrid charging station in India, which will feature both Superchargers and Destination chargers. Tesla plans to roll out additional fast-charging stations at key travel routes nationwide. The Supercharging network, which achieved a 99.95 percent uptime in 2024, enables rapid charging of up to 267 kilometers in just 15 minutes. To support convenient home charging, Tesla will provide a free wall connector with each new Model Y purchase. This initiative aims to simplify daily charging for owners and reduce reliance on fuel-based alternatives. With these developments, Tesla reiterates its dedication to supporting a zero-emission future in India.

Tesla launches in India with small bet on potentially massive market

Tesla (TSLA) officially launched in India on Tuesday, making a small bet on a country with massive growth potential. Tesla's first showroom, dubbed a "Tesla Experience Center," opened in a fashionable mall in the cosmopolitan city of Mumbai, India's largest metropolis with nearly 13 million residents and more than 23 million including the greater region. Tesla's only car on offer is the refreshed Model Y, which will be imported from China, where Tesla builds models with right-hand drive. The cost will be steep, however, due to India's strict import tariffs of nearly 100%. Per Tesla's India website, the Model Y rear-wheel drive will start at 6.1 million rupees (or 61 lakhs, as they say in India), or around $70,000. The equivalent Model Y in the US starts at $44,900 before taxes and fees. Tesla's India deliveries will begin later in the third quarter. Not surprisingly, Tesla is not expected to sell many EVs in the country with such a high starting price and where the average annual income is around $4,000. And while India is the world's third-largest car market by volume, EVs account for only 4% of overall sales. "We don't expect Tesla to play the volume game right away given the price tag," Counterpoint senior analyst Soumen Mandal told the AFP. But growth in India could be explosive. Per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), India's population will reach nearly 1.7 trillion people by 2050, whereas China is expected to see its population decline. Much of India's current population still lives rurally, with the country experiencing a low labor participation rate; those percentages are expected to flip, with a growing middle class on the way. People Research on India's Consumer Economy (PRICE) projects that by 2030, India will add about 75 million middle-class and 25 million rich households, with the total share of these segments reaching 56%. India's strong preference for import tariffs, which have been in place for over 70 years in various capacities, is a means to boost domestic industrial production and make foreign companies invest in India. President Trump's tariff war isn't helping matters, but the two countries are negotiating to make a deal, with India's trade delegation currently in Washington. As for Tesla, CEO Elon Musk has toyed with building a plant in India for both local production and export, but a slowing EV market has the CEO recently betting on AI and autonomous technology. But investing in R&D to ease tariffs could be a way into India without having to build a plant. "In the future we wish to see R&D and manufacturing done in India, and I am sure at an appropriate stage Tesla will think about it," Devendra Fadnavis, chief minister of Maharashtra, the second-most-populous state in India, said per Reuters. Though he is popular as a businessman, Musks' X platform is mired in a legal battle over censorship in the country. Nevertheless, Musk held a one-on-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington earlier this year when Indian business leaders visited the White House, indicating the two may have a rapport. Modi has made no secret of his desire to reform Indian policies to boost foreign investment. Even domestic Indian automakers are welcoming the new competition. "Welcome to India, Elon Musk and Tesla. One of the world's largest EV opportunities just got more exciting," Anand Mahindra, fellow billionaire and chairman of the Mahindra Group (M& said earlier Tuesday on X. "Competition drives innovation, and there's plenty of road ahead. Looking forward to seeing you at the charging station." Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. Fadnavis inaugurates Tesla's first showroom in India

Mumbai, July 15 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today inaugurated the Tesla Experience Center at the Bandra-Kurla Complex here "I welcome Tesla to Mumbai. Tesla has come to the right city and the right state of Maharashtra. It is a matter of happiness for us that Tesla is launching its first showroom in India in Mumbai. It is setting up a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being built by Tesla here. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra because this state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Y model in India," Fadnavis said at the launch event. "India and especially Maharashtra now have a big and strong market for electric mobility. We are now also becoming a manufacturing hub for electric mobility. But I think Tesla will change the entire market. Tesla is not just a car company but also makes new designs. This is why Tesla is liked globally. Tesla should consider us as partners in their journey," Fadnavis said. Located in the heart of Mumbai at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the 4,000-square-foot flagship Tesla showroom called the Tesla Experience Center, marks the beginning of the American electric vehicle giant's long-awaited entry into the Indian market. The Tesla Experience Center is expected to be followed by more outlets in major metros, including New Delhi. The rent for the showroom in Mumbai, is Rs 35 lakh per month. The storefront has been fully branded prominently with the Tesla logo and a partially covered white Tesla vehicle inside the showroom. The showroom will serve as the American electric vehicle maker's first physical presence in India. While billionaire Elon Musk's company has not yet confirmed plans for a manufacturing plant or an assembly facility in India, the showroom launch is being seen as a strategic move to gauge consumer interest and market potential. The showroom is currently showcasing the Model Y, Tesla's all-electric SUV. Six Model Y Tesla SUVs were imported from Shanghai to Mumbai for the opening on Tuesday, according to a showroom official. The Tesla Model Y is available in India, in two variants, namely Rear-Wheel Drive at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom price) and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom price). Bookings for the Model Y are now open, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025, according to a showroom official. The Tesla Model Y comes in a standard Stealth Grey colour, while other options like Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quick Silver and Ultra Red are available at an extra cost of up to Rs 1.85 lakh, depending on the colour chosen by customers, a showroom official said. The dashboard is simple and flat, with a soft-touch finish and a single horizontal line of ambient lighting running across its width. There are no physical buttons or dials since everything is controlled through the large 15.4-inch touchscreen in the centre. It features a three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls. The centre console is wide and neatly designed, with covered storage compartments and a wireless charging pad. The vehicle's rear seats are also reclinable and passengers sitting behind can make use of a separate 8-inch touchscreen for entertainment as well as rear air conditioning vents. The vehicle is equipped with a 9-speaker sound system, ambient lighting, an air purifier, a wireless phone charger, connected car tech and even a powered bonnet, according to a showroom official.
