Video shows gunman injuring 2 in St. Paul cafe before taking own life in police shootout

New surveillance video shows the moment a gunman involved in a shooting spree last week in St. Paul fired into a restaurant, injuring two people. Police say 32-year-old Tevin Bellaphant died by suicide on Friday after shooting at police officers several times inside an Aldi grocery store and a nearby Cub Foods off Clarence Street on the city's east side. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension now says a man and a woman were hurt amid the spree inside neighboring Destiny Café 2, correcting the original police report that stated the victims were two women. The bureau says officers were first dispatched on Friday after Bellaphant took a 4-year-old child from a relative's home without permission. Two St. Paul police officers found Bellaphant inside a nearby Aldi store. The BCA says they tried talking to Bellaphant but he pushed an officer and ran off, leaving the child behind. After falling near the front of the Aldi, officers say he pulled out a handgun and fired at them. The officers shot back as he fled towards the cafe. Surveillance footage shows a man and a woman frantically running inside the cafe as Bellaphant approaches. The woman is seen trying to keep the door closed as Bellaphant gets his arm inside the door, shooting her and the man, before fleeing. Cafe manager Eddie Thao says the woman was shot in the upper leg and the man was struck in the lower leg. He says it was a truly scary scene, with 40 to 50 people packed into the restaurant. "I was so shocked when he shot the two bullets at first, it was three total … we didn't even know how to react," Thao said. "It was in less than seconds, and then we ducked our heads … I'm so glad our customers, they weren't hurt." Thao says the man and woman were walking their dog and were likely just in the wrong place at the wrong time. On Wednesday, the bureau released the names of the three law enforcement members who exchanged gunfire with Bellaphant: officers Christopher Leon and Melissa Leistikow, and Sgt. Megan Kosloske. All three are on standard administrative leave. Minnesota BCA identifies St. Paul police officers involved in grocery store shootout

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on Wednesday identified the police officers who fired at a man during a shooting spree that ended at a St. Paul Cub Foods. The bureau says officers Christopher Leon and Melissa Leistikow, and Sergeant Megan Kosloske with the St. Paul Police Department, all fired their department-issued firearms. Leon has five years of law enforcement experience, while Leistikow and Kosloske both have 10 years of experience. The suspect, identified by family and the BCA as 32-year-old Tevin Bellaphant, died by suicide during the incident. Just after 11:30 a.m., St. Paul police responded to the 1500 block of Jessamine Lane on a report of an assault. The BCA says the suspect, later identified as Bellaphant, fired a gun inside the home before taking a 4-year-old child without permission and leaving. Authorities later learned the man and child were at the Aldi grocery store on the 1100 block of Clarence Street near Lake Phalen. Kosloske and Leistikow were checking the store when they saw Bellaphant and the child. When they approached him and began to speak, investigators say Bellaphant shoved Leistikow and ran toward the front of the store, leaving the child behind. The two officers were chasing Bellaphant when he suddenly fell near the registers, according to authorities. As he stood up, he pulled a handgun out and fired toward Kosloske and Leistikow, who both fired back. Bellaphant then ran out of the store, where he allegedly fired at officer Leon, who had been inside his squad car. The two exchanged gunfire as Bellaphant ran across Clarence Street, the BCA says. Authorities say Bellaphant attempted to get inside a nearby restaurant, Destiny Cafe 2. He managed to get his arm and gun inside the doors and fired at people inside, injuring a man and a woman. Previously, witnesses told WCCO two women inside the cafe had been injured. Next, Bellaphant ran toward Cub Foods as Leon emerged from around the building. The BCA says Leon fired additional shots as he chased Bellaphant toward the grocery store. Officers evacuated the Cub Foods after locating Bellaphant near the front area of the store. Police tried to negotiate with Bellaphant, who investigators say was expressing thoughts of suicide. He then "suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said in a written news release. He died at the scene. All officers involved in the incident have been placed on critical incident leave. BCA agents are reviewing body camera footage taken of the incident as part of the investigation. The BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for review. Bellaphant had three prior felony convictions in Minnesota, meaning he was barred from having a gun. Those convictions include domestic assault, assault with a dangerous weapon and burglary. Gunman in St. Paul grocery store shootout identified by family; had 3 prior felony convictions

Family members say 32-year-old Tevin Bellaphant died by suicide after a shooting spree that ended at a St. Paul Cub Foods last week. Police say it all began at this home with a domestic assault call to 911. Tevin Bellaphant's sister, Nakia Bellaphant, didn't want to talk about the incident, just about her brother. "He supported us, he was a good person," she said. "Nothing like this should have happened." Two young cousins say Tevin Bellaphant doted on them. "He wasn't really a bad person," Kavaria Hutchinson said. "The events that took place on Friday don't define him. He was one of my favorite cousins." But last Friday, police say he went on a rampage, grabbing a 4-year-old relative and taking the boy to a nearby Aldi, where he exchanged gunfire with St. Paul police. Tevin Bellaphant then ran out of the Aldi, toward Destiny Cafe. Staffers there say he fired some rounds, injuring two women, and then he proceeded to run out of the cafe to the Cub Foods. Tevin Bellaphant left the 4-year-old relative unhurt at the Aldi. The two women suffered minor injuries. After a standoff with police, Bellaphant died by suicide inside the Cub. Tevin Bellaphant has three prior felony convictions in Minnesota, meaning he was barred from having a gun. Those convictions include domestic assault, assault with a dangerous weapon and burglary. Friday's events unfolded two blocks from popular Lake Phalen and in a packed shopping center at lunchtime. "With everything that has happened here, it's definitely more dangerous than it should be," shopper Nancy Yang said. Multiple officers are on standard leave following the shooting, in which officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Law enforcement is expected to release more information on Tuesday.
