Fort Worth replaces Austin as 4th-largest Texas city. What is the fastest-growing US city?
It's official: Fort Worth has replaced Austin as the fourth-largest Texas city, hitting the million milestone in 2024.
On Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau published new population data from July 2024 and revealed changes in both national and state rankings. Fort Worth's rise over Austin was initially suspected in November, when the Texas Demographic Center released its 2023 Population Estimates report.
Fort Worth also became the 11th most populous city in the country, pushing Austin to 13th, below San Jose.
Texas cities dominated the 2024 lists of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, in both percentage and numerical increases. The findings compared the newly-released July 2024 data with July 2023 numbers.
Texas claimed nearly half of the country's 15 fastest-growing cities, with five located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Four of the five fastest-growing U.S. cities are found in the Lone Star State.
