Greg McElroy Reveals Running Back Ranking for Texas Standout Tre Wisner

The Texas Longhorns' running back room hit a roadblock before the 2024 season even started. After a breakout campaign in 2023, CJ Baxter was the expected starter, but he suffered a season-ending LCL and PCL tear on Aug. 7. Texas needed someone to step up and fill in for Baxter's production. On a recent edition of "Always College Football," Greg McElroy ranked Wisner as the No. 7 running back in college football. McElroy is excited to see how the Texas backfield looks with both Wisner and Baxter back for 2025. Texas Longhorns running back Quintrevion Wisner (26). Sara Diggins/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images "Baxter gets hurt in the preseason," McElroy said. "Jaydon Blue, early in the season, was struggling, putting the ball on the deck. So, ball security was a bit of an issue, which means Wisner finally gets his chance, and sure enough, it was an outstanding season nonetheless. If you look at the game against A&M, that's where he kind of catapulted into becoming a household name outside of Austin, Texas." Advertisement Wisner was a member of the 2023 class and a former four-star prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings. As a true freshman, he spent most of his playing time on special teams, appearing in 14 games. Fast-forward to last season, and Wisner had a breakout year. He played in 15 games with 12 starts at running back. Texas is coming off a 2024 campaign in which it finished 11-1 in the regular season, qualified for the SEC Championship Game, and was the No. 5 seed in the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns lost to the Georgia Bulldogs in the conference championship but reached the semifinal round of the playoff, losing to the eventual national champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes, 28-14. Texas opens the 2025 season against Ohio State on Aug. 30. Related: Texas Named Finalist For Elite College Football Prospect on Tuesday

Longhorns land highly-recruited DL transfer

Longhorns land highly-recruited DL transfer Longhorns make major addition in transfer portal The Texas Longhorns' defense has gotten a major boost for the 2025 season. On Tuesday, former Syracuse defensive lineman Maraad Watson committed to the Longhorns. After a stellar freshman season in which Watson earned All-America honors, he will look to build on his success with a new program. During the 2024 campaign, Watson recorded 31 tackles, including two for a loss. On a Syracuse defense that struggled against the run, Watson was the exception. He earned a grade of 77.4 from PFF across 200 rush defense snaps. That is one of the many reasons the Irvington High School product was hard to keep out of the lineup. Over the last few weeks, the Longhorns have been busy improving their depth. They now have 10 transfer commitments in 2025. Watson will join a defense that includes Travis Shaw, Cole Brevard, Hero Kanu, and Lavon Johnson. That group should make the Longhorns a hard team to face in a competitive SEC conference. In Watson, the Longhorns are getting a player who still has some room to grow. He has three years of eligibility remaining, giving the Longhorns plenty of time to help Watson master his position. If he can reach his potential, then the Longhorns' defense will have another star to rely on. As the Longhorns pursued Watson, they faced plenty of completion. The former Syracuse star drew interest from Ohio State, Georgia, and Tennessee. However, during his visit to Auston on Tuesday, the Longhorns made Watson an offer he couldn't deny. He was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. However, his stock was on the rise when he entered the portal. With the start of the 2025 campaign just a few months away, the Longhorns defensive line is again shaping up to be a strength as Texas looks to end its title drought.

Cam Newton suggests Cowboys could tank for Arch Manning, hire Nick Saban

Cam Newton suggests Cowboys could tank for Arch Manning, hire Nick Saban Arch Manning has yet to take a snap as the Texas Longhorns' permanent starting quarterback, but his name is already generating NFL Draft buzz. Whether he declares or not, the former five-star recruit is expected to be a focal point in the 2026 draft conversation. And according to former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, the Dallas Cowboys may already have their sights set on him. During an appearance on First Take with Stephen A. Smith, Newton speculated that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is orchestrating a long-term plan to land Manning as the franchise's next quarterback. The 2015 NFL MVP suggested that Dallas is positioning itself to secure the No. 1 overall pick in 2026 and pair Manning with legendary coach Nick Saban. 'I think they're tanking for Arch. Make it make sense. Coach Schottenheimer has one-and-done written all over him,' Newton said on Thursday, per On3. 'Ok, why do you want one and done? You get the first pick of the draft. Not only that, I'm going to go back into my godfather bag and say, Ok, Jerry Jones is a businessman, and he's going to get into his Don Corleone mentality and he's going to give him a deal he can't refuse. Who? Nick Saban. Go get Nick Saban as your head coach and Arch Manning as your No. 1 pick.' Newton's theory is certainly bold, but highly improbable. While the Cowboys have yet to find consistent playoff success under former head coach Mike McCarthy, orchestrating a full-scale rebuild with a calculated tank would be an unprecedented move for a franchise that has aimed to be competitive. As for Manning, it remains far too early to project him as the No. 1 pick in 2026. The Texas quarterback has yet to secure a full-time starting role, and his draft stock will largely depend on his performance in the coming seasons. While Newton's claim is unlikely to come to fruition, it's certainly an interesting take. It does have the possibility to become true, but for now it's unlikely.
