Standard-Times reporter wins state award

Standard-Times reporter Rosanna Fraire has garnered statewide recognition for her video journalism. Her award for a video produced in 2024 was announced April 26 at the annual Texas Managing Editors convention in San Antonio. The Standard-Times competed in the category for 1A newspaper and web-only news organizations. Fraire won second place from TME in the video category for 1A for "Meals for the Elderly delivers annual holiday meals" about a San Angelo nonprofit providing Christmas meals to disabled, older residents to bring them holiday joy with a homecooked meal. The video was part of a package including an article and photos about Meals for the Elderly and the nonprofit's Christmas meal program. Fraire has worked for the newspaper for almost six years and has over eight years of journalism experience. Her beats include business, breaking news, events, local government and more. Herald-Banner earns 11 honors at state newspaper convention

SAN ANTONIO – The Herald-Banner was recognized with 11 awards over the weekend at the annual Texas Managing Editors convention in San Antonio. Topping the winner's list for the Herald-Banner was longtime sports editor David Claybourn who was named the Class A Star Sports Reporter of the Year. The Star Awards are the top individual honors with newspapers and online media outlets competing in three divisions. The Herald-Banner competed in bi-weekly and ti-weekly division. In addition to Claybourn's win, the Herald-Banner also placed in three other Star Awards categories with editor Kent Miller claiming second for Star Designer of the Year and third for Star Opinion Writer of the Year. Laurie White King received honorable mention for Star Photojournalist of the Year. Staffers also collected seven other individual awards with Claybourn earning second in news photography and third in sports column writing, Miller earning third in feature writing and honorable mention in general column writing and deadline writing, King earning second in photojournalism and Warren Morrison earning second in headline writing. The Herald-Banner finished third in the overall Class A division for total individual awards behind the Nacogdoches Daily-Sentinel (16 awards) and the Lufkin Daily News (12). Awards are based on work published in 2024. Other newspapers competing in Class A included the Abilene Reporter-News, El Paso Inc., the Baytown Sun, the Odessa American, the Bryan-College Station Eagle, The San Angelo Standard-Times, the Sequin Gazette-Enterprise, the Wichita Falls Times Record News and others.
