From Birth To Adulthood: Advancing Disability Access

In a world in which systems often exclude people with disabilities, Texas Southern University (TSU), the University of Guyana, and the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) are stepping forward to address this population and its corresponding challenges and triumphs. This October, the three institutions will co-host a virtual conference that looks at disability access across the life span, from birth through adulthood, and from schooling to employment. The event is titled 'Exploring the Impact of Disability Access Across the Spectrum: Birth to Employment. For TSU, the conference reflects more than academic interests. It builds on a broader institutional commitment to educational justice. According to Carl B. Goodman, provost at TSU, 'We are committed to creating meaningful opportunities to work with the community and connect students with faculty to address real-world issues. The conference directly supports the mission of our College of Education's special education program.' As a Historically Black University (HBCU) located in Houston, Texas, TSU has historically served students from marginalized communities. Goodman shared that the university sees inclusion as an active responsibility: 'We want to help manufacture more inclusive and seamless pathways from early childhood through adulthood. We're here to learn from the lived experiences shared at the conference and shape more inclusive practices.' The conference's global focus is also purposeful. According to Stephan Smith, CEO of AHEAD and a co-sponsor, 'While our area of focus is on higher education, of course, we recognize the importance of disability access at all levels. The experience of disability unites people across geographic bounds.' The partnership with the University of Guyana brings a critical Caribbean perspective to the conversation. According to Paloma Mohamed Martin, Vice Chancellor and one of the conference organizers, 'In Guyana, as in many parts of the world, there is a welcome movement to reframe disabilities in the context of human dignity. Part of what we do at the University of Guyana is to try to give agency to the invisible.' University of Guyana President Liddon Lashley also emphasized the complexities of supporting individuals with disabilities in the Caribbean. He stated, "Guyana is a post-colonial global South country with a significant proportion of the population being persons with disabilities, emergent and evolving diversities, additional needs, as well as various forms of neurodivergence. It is to form a catalyst of change in thinking so that all can belong, all can be accommodated, and all can achieve together.' For disability practitioners like Glennis Daniels-Bacchus, who consults on disability support services, is a member of AHEAD, and is originally from Guyana, the issues are deeply personal. She shared, "I am excited to be a part of this conference and to share my professional and personal experience. Disability access must be seen through a continuum lens. We must think about how we prepare individuals for each phase of life—with schools, cultural groups, families, and employers all playing a part.' Ultimately, the conference is focused on sparking more conversation. The organizers seek to influence policy, teaching, and public understanding of the topic. Scheduled for October, the virtual event will bring together educators, researchers, policymakers, and advocates from the U.S., the Caribbean, and other global regions. The goal overall will be to rethink how systems can be built not around barriers, but around access, dignity, and full participation.

Beyoncé Concert with HBCU Band Earns Emmy Nominations

Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour stop in her hometown of Houston was more than a concert - it was a cultural reset. Texas Southern University's "Ocean of Soul" marching band shared the stage with the Texas native for an iconic performance. One that became a love letter to Houston, to Black excellence, and to the legacy of HBCU music culture. Now, that history-making moment is earning its flowers in the form of four Emmy nominations. The televised special Beyoncé: Cowboy Carter-Live from Houston aired on ABC and has been nominated for several Emmy Awards. The performance is up for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Production Design, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Music Direction. Beyoncé's star power alone commands attention. The inclusion of TSU's powerhouse band grounded the performance in tradition and elevated it to something iconic. For TSU's Ocean of Soul, the stage wasn't just a platform - it was a proclamation. Their presence on national television spotlighted the vibrant sound, precision, and pride that define HBCU marching bands. This wasn't just halftime entertainment; it was a statement about artistry, discipline, and cultural heritage. The band's live performance with Beyoncé showcased the symbiotic relationship between Black musical traditions and mainstream artistry. It brought the energy of the HBCU experience into millions of living rooms, solidifying the cultural currency of HBCU bands on a global scale. Texas Southern University's involvement extended beyond the stage. Administrators and band members took in Beyoncé's exclusive BeyGOOD suite during the performance weekend. Underscoring the growing relationship between the university and the superstar's philanthropic arm. That partnership came with tangible benefits. Through BeyGOOD's Pursue Change initiative, TSU's band department received a $100,000 grant. The funds will help fuel scholarships, improve recruitment and retention, and provide much-needed technology and infrastructure upgrades. It's an investment in the future of Black excellence - and a commitment to keeping the Ocean of Soul flowing strong for years to come. Rooted in Houston's Third Ward, Texas Southern University is a cultural cornerstone. With a legacy of producing leaders, artists, and changemakers, TSU continues to thrive at the intersection of education and empowerment. The university's role in this Emmy-nominated performance is just the latest example of how HBCUs continue to shape the national conversation, influence pop culture, and uplift communities. As Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter performance draws national Southern University stands proudly as a representative of the sound, soul, and spirit of Houston and of HBCU excellence across the nation. Cornyn says Trump ‘not ready' to endorse despite appeals

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said President Trump has told him he is not ready to endorse in his contentious GOP Senate primary against Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). 'I've talked to him about it a number of times. He is not ready to make that endorsement,' Cornyn told NBC News on Tuesday. 'I think as we start advertising and closing the gap in the polls, hopefully he'll see fit to make that endorsement, but we can't wait,' he continued. 'I pointed out to him, and he knows this, that if he endorsed me, the race would be over.' Cornyn and Paxton are both Trump allies, but the president has held off on formally endorsing in the race. Numerous polls show Cornyn trailing Paxton in the primary. A poll released in May by Texas Southern University showed Paxton leading Cornyn 43 percent to 34 percent, with 23 percent saying they were undecided. An internal poll also released in May by the Senate Leadership Fund, which is supporting Cornyn, showed Paxton trailing Cornyn by 16 points. While Cornyn and his allies are hopeful that a Trump endorsement would boost him, polls show otherwise. An internal poll obtained by The Hill and conducted by the firm Eyes Over showed Cornyn trailing Paxton 44 percent to 38 percent after Republican primary voters were informed of a scenario in which Trump backed Cornyn, compared to 50 percent to 33 percent before they were told. Another poll obtained by The Hill, which was conducted on behalf of the Conservative Policy Project, showed Cornyn only gaining 1 point with Trump's endorsement against Paxton and trailing 46 percent to 34 percent. The same poll showed Paxton trailing a generic Democratic candidate by three points. However, Cornyn allies worry that Paxton as a Senate nominee would open the door to Democrats at having a chance to win statewide in the Lone Star State. The same Texas Southern University poll showed Cornyn leading Democratic Senate candidate and former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) by 4 points and Paxton leading Allred by 2 points.

Paxton raises almost $3M in latest quarter

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's (R) Senate campaign said Friday it raised $2.9 million in the second quarter of 2025. Paxton is challenging incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) for his seat in the 2026 midterms. Cornyn, considered a GOP fundraising giant, has not yet released his second-quarter haul. However, the pro-Cornyn Texans for a Conservative Majority PAC said earlier this month it raised $10.9 million in the quarter after Paxton launched his campaign in April. Cornyn raised $2.5 million in the first quarter of the year, sending him into the second quarter with $5.7 million cash on hand. Most polls show Paxton leading Cornyn in the state's Republican Senate primary, which is slated for early March. However, the prospect of the current attorney general as the nominee has made many Republicans anxious and Democrats hopeful. A poll released by Texas Southern University last month showed Cornyn leading Senate candidate and former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) by 4 points and Paxton leading Allred by 2 points. A separate poll released by the Senate Leadership Fund, which is supporting Cornyn, showed the incumbent leading Allred by 6 points, while Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) led the Texas lawmaker by 4 and Paxton trailed him by 1. A source told The Hill that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-N.D.), who is supporting Cornyn, met with President Trump on Wednesday evening to discuss upcoming Senate races, including the Lone Star State's. It's unclear whether Trump, who is an ally of both Cornyn and Paxton, will endorse in the race. The latest numbers also come as the attorney general and his wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton (R), began the divorce process. Ken Paxton, who has served in his current role since 2015, was impeached in 2023 but later acquitted and faced allegations of corruption and taking part in an extramarital affair.
