Archer County Jail dig sparks interest and donations for museum
ARCHER COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — From rusting cells to buried treasures, one Archer County landmark is the focus of a unique dig this week. This week, archeologists, students, and volunteers are getting their hands dirty at the old Archer County jail to uncover not just artifacts but awareness and donations to help restore the site into a museum that celebrates the region's rich past. Wichita Falls councilors make final decision on lake lots sale The Archer County Museum and Arts Center is hosting a four-day archeological dig at the old county jail. Archeologists, volunteers, and locals are working side by side not just to preserve the past, but to fund the future. The jail, which dates back to the early 1900s, has housed over 8,000 inmates, but after its closure in 1974, it has sat empty for decades. Archeologist, Jessie Otis Dalton hopes that the weeklong event will not only reveal hidden artifacts but also help spark interest and donations to restore and reopen the building as a museum and tourist attraction. 'We think it is pretty important to protect historical sites because they don't belong to one person, they belong to everyone. This is embedded in the collective memory of Texas citizens, and we love our Texas history. This is it in action right now,' Dalton said. The dig wraps up Saturday, May 10, when the public is invited to come to dig and tour the jail, followed by a public banquet, live music, and artifact presentation, offering locals a firsthand look at what's been found. Wichita Falls councilors make final decision on lake lots sale
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The chapter of lake lots between Arrowhead and Kickapoo neighbors with the city of Wichita Falls has come to a close. After more than a year of setting the new lease rate and getting the land appraised, the city has made a decision on a potential sale. Wichita Falls maintains drought restrictions amid lake levels 'We are not going to sell any lake lots at any price at any time in the foreseeable future,' Wichita Falls Mayor Tim Short said. A sigh of relief for some Lake Arrowhead and Kickapoo neighbors, but frustrations remain high. 'I think it's very sad to up our leases and give us nothing in return,' Tina Jones said. 'At what point does it become [a] much [higher] priority for the city of Wichita Falls, not just a priority for lake residents?' a lake neighbor asked councilors. A third-party appraiser returned samples of the lots at fair market value, but some said they were not fair and unaffordable. 'At $145,000, and I fell over,' one neighbor said. 'It's a great lot, but dang, you know, so not having to come up with that money is a relief.' 'I do not think the values are appropriate. You're creating a situation where the community has a destruction of community value.' City Attorney Kinley Hegglund explains selling one or two lots doesn't make fiscal sense. 'To try to sell one or two or three lots in the middle of an unplanned and surveyed large parcel of land is problematic without getting the whole parcel of land surveyed. That would be in the neighborhood of 4 to $500,000 to do that,' Hegglund said. Neighbors call for a bigger voice on the dias. Also, accusing the city of not keeping up with road conditions. 'Y'all can elect a member that says, hey, this is the representative that's going out and having the town halls at Lake Arrowhead or Lake Kickapoo.' 'The roads out there are or is in good shape or sometimes better than what we have, in the city limits. And I'm saying that as a general rule, not every road,' Assistant City Manager Paul Menzies said. Mayor Tim Short reminds citizens he's a phone call away, making a call to action for neighbors to form a committee. 'If there are groups that want to meet you, let me know,' Short said. 'We'll be there,' Short said. The council is making its final decision on the lake lots. It could be another five years before the issue is revisited to determine the lease rate. Wichita Falls maintains drought restrictions amid lake levels
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — As local lake levels reach almost 90%, the City of Wichita Falls is still under drought restrictions. While the U.S. Drought Monitor no longer lists Wichita Falls as in a drought, City of Wichita Falls Public Information Officer Chris Horgen said removing restrictions requires a resolution from the city council. This safeguard was put in place years ago. 'Written in the ordinance that was passed years ago, after the last drought, it takes city council and a resolution from city council to turn [drought restrictions] around, and lift, I guess, those restrictions,' Horgen said. 'They did that as a safeguard.' Horgen said it also keeps the city from going in and out of drought restrictions when the lake levels bounce around the 65% mark. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
