Stray dog control The statement by an animal rights activist that rabies is a 'halki beemari (mild illness') is outrageous. Rabies is a lethal virus with 100% mortality, causing a prolonged, painful death. Such statements reflect an indefensibly callous attitude, which ignores the danger that aggressive street dogs pose to working people, who cannot sequester themselves in their homes like the elite. However, the Supreme Court of India's directive that all dogs in Delhi must be captured within eight weeks is unfeasible and inhumane. The scientific method to control the canine population is by implementing the Animal Birth Control rules. The Municipal Corporation should partner with welfare organisations to sterilise and vaccinate dogs. Rather than mass culling, sick dogs and those that routinely attack people should be selectively euthanised. The Public Health Department should ensure that all hospitals and mohalla clinics have stocks of rabies and tetanus vaccines, alongside an awareness campaign that both injections must be administered within 24 hours of a dog bite. If these protocols are rigorously implemented, there will be no street dogs and no rabies deaths in the near future. Aarti Sethi, New Delhi Doorstep ration delivery I was pleasantly surprised when the two women who usually handle the sale of ration items in the government shop in my area called me to say that they were at my gate. They were from the women's co-operative stores. Everything was executed smoothly but the women looked exhausted and were struggling with poor wi-fi connectivity. If senior citizens are to benefit from this scheme — it is called the 'Thaayumanavar Thittam' and is meant for senior citizens — they should have their cards and containers ready. With this step, the mobile delivery of rations would be much easier for government staff. Mini Krishnan, Chennai

Stalin launches scheme for doorstep delivery of rations

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday launched 'Thaayumanavar Thittam' to deliver ration supplies directly to the homes of senior citizens aged above 70 years and persons with disabilities (PwD). Stalin visited beneficiaries' homes at Tondiarpet, Gopal Nagar, and Annai Sathya Nagar, to hand over rations and flagged off delivery vehicles, fitted with electronic weighing scales and e-PoS machines. Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin flagged off vehicles in Chepauk and Triplicane and delivered rations to beneficiaries. When Meenakshi, an elderly woman, told Stalin that standing in a queue for an hour and carrying the weight back home made them dependent on others, Stalin said the trouble is set to end. "From now on, it will come to your doorstep," he assured her. Calling it a scheme close to his heart, he said it was designed to remove the last-mile barrier for those unable to visit ration shops. About 20 lakh senior citizens and 1.2 lakh PwD will get essential commodities such as rice and sugar delivered on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month. Govt will spend 35.92crore annually. "We believe our duty does not end with the announcement of a scheme; it extends to ensuring that every intended beneficiary receives its full benefits," Stalin said, urging the staff of the cooperative dept to ensure that the implementation is flawless. "Doorstep delivery of essential commodities for vulnerable groups will indirectly boost household nutrition security, especially in low-income elderly households, and reduce health risks associated with irregular rations," said economist R Sivarajan. Earlier in the day, Stalin inaugurated fisheries infrastructure projects worth 177.16crore aiming to boost fish production, promote sustainable fishing, and ensure hygienic handling from catch to consumption while providing safe berthing for boats Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
