New faces only: Iraqi alliance excludes political veterans from 2025 elections

Shafaq News/ The National Resolve Alliance (Al-Hasm) will not include former ministers or parliamentarians on its candidate list for Iraq's upcoming legislative elections on November 11. In a statement on Tuesday, the Al-Hasm's Head, Thabit Al-Abbasi, noted that 'the alliance is committed to promoting new faces and honest, capable individuals to serve the people,' adding that the alliance's belief in democratic change through the ballot box and its commitment to placing national interest above all else. In March, Iraq's High Electoral Commission (IHEC) launched a one-month voter registry update. According to spokesperson Jumana Al-Ghalai, around 29 million Iraqis are eligible to vote.

Shafaq News/ Iraq has received the first two Caracal helicopters from France under a bilateral defense agreement, the Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday According to the ministry's statement, Defense Minister Thabit Al-Abbasi confirmed the handover as part of a long-term contract between Baghdad and Paris to supply a full fleet of Caracal aircraft. 'The remaining helicopters will be delivered in stages as production concludes, with operational deployment scheduled for June to coincide with the Army Aviation Command's anniversary.' Al-Abbasi, after joining a test flight aboard one of the helicopters flown by an Iraqi crew, praised the rapid progress of Iraqi pilots and engineers, highlighting their 'swift mastery of advanced systems.' France to assume command of NATO mission next May, Iraqi Ministry of Defense

The Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday that the French Republic will assume command of the NATO mission in Iraq next May. "Defense Minister Thabit Al-Abbasi arrived in the French Republic on an official visit lasting several days, accompanied by a delegation of senior commanders and officers from the ministry," said the Ministry of Defense - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA. Al-Abbasi met with his French counterpart, Sébastien Lecornu, at the headquarters of the French Ministry of Defense. During the meeting, several topics were discussed, most notably the regional security situation and the role of the international coalition in Iraq. MP Nayef Al-Shammari told Shafaq News that the decision followed a meeting attended by senior figures from both groups, including Defense Minister Thabit Al-Abbasi, the leader of National Resolve, and former Nineveh Governor Najm Al-Jubouri, who heads Nineveh For Its People. Nineveh For Its People confirmed the meeting in a statement, revealing that discussions focused on political developments, strengthening national partnership, and promoting reforms. The Iraqi Cabinet has set November 11, 2025, as the date for the next parliamentary elections, despite ongoing disputes over the Election Law.

Shafaq News/ Turkiye will host a second meeting of the four-nation alliance—comprising Iraq, Turkiye, Jordan, and Syria—next month to advance discussions, a source told Shafaq News on Monday. The source said that foreign and defense ministers, military chiefs, and intelligence officials from the four countries agreed to convene in April to build on the first official meeting held Sunday in Jordan, which focused on security coordination, intelligence-sharing, and countering ISIS and its offshoots in Syria and the broader region. The Jordan-hosted summit brought together high-level officials, including Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Defense Minister Thabit Al-Abbasi, and Intelligence Chief Hamid Al-Shatri; Turkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, and Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin; Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qasra, and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab; Lebanon's Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, Defense Minister Michel Menassa, and Intelligence Director Antoine Kahwaji. During the talks, participants agreed to strengthen military and security coordination against terrorism and establish a joint operations center focused on counterterrorism, particularly targeting ISIS. The alliance also committed to combating drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and organized crime, while addressing regional stability, Syria's reconstruction, and calls to lift sanctions on Damascus. Additionally, the nations emphasized the importance of coordinating with the United Nations to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees from Iraq and Turkiye.
