Hodak's underdogs Persib ready to bite in AFC showdown

PETALING JAYA: Persib Bandung coach Bojan Hodak has admitted his side will embrace the role of underdogs as they prepare for a challenging AFC Champions League Two campaign following Friday's group draw. The Croatian tactician, who knows South-East Asian football inside out after years of coaching in Malaysia, will see his Persib side matched against some of the region's most ambitious clubs, Selangor from Malaysia, Singapore's Lions City Sailors, and Thailand's Bangkok United. 'It is an interesting group,' said Hodak, reflecting on the draw. 'According to TransferMarkt values, Bangkok, Lions, and Selangor are favourites, but I think anybody can beat anybody in this group.' Hodak, who has squared off against Selangor multiple times during his managerial career in Malaysia, is relishing the battles ahead. For him, the draw represents both familiarity and fresh challenge. 'Bangkok were second in the Thai League, which to me, shows they are a good team, and they have qualified for the Champions League before, so they will be favourites,' noted Hodak. 'Lions have also invested a lot, they kept their core players from last season and they played in the final of the AFC Champions League Two last season. So, a good team, top. 'Selangor, in the last six to seven years, have invested a lot of money to build their squad. They didn't win anything, but they have invested a lot. We will see how good they are.' For Persib, the journey is not about being favourites but about upsetting the odds. Hodak underlined the club's financial discipline and steady growth as key strengths, even if they cannot compete with rivals' spending power. 'Persib are the smallest among the four, so we are coming as underdogs but we can fight and surprise people,' he said. 'We won the league for two consecutive seasons. Lots of our players received huge offers from other clubs. 'Financially, Persib are always stable but they do not overspend. 'We may not be the richest in the country but somehow we are the most consistent.' The clash with Selangor will be especially be intriguing given Hodak had coached several of their current players at different stages of their careers, from club football with KL City and JDT, to the Malaysia Under-19 national team. Adding further spice, Persib's Argentine playmaker Luciano Guaycochea once captained Perak and has plenty of experience facing the Klang Valley sides, while the Red Giants will also meet their former captain Safuwan Baharuddin, now donning Lions City colours on loan.

Kirins roar back, launch hunt

Former champions Muang Thong United will begin their new Thai League 1 season at home against Sukhothai on Saturday as they look to return to their former glory. Despite being one of the biggest clubs in the country, the Kirins have not won the top-flight title in nine years. Their last Thai League success was back in 2016. They face a tough task against champions Buriram United, who are seen as favourites to retain the title, while Bangkok United, BG Pathum United and Port are all tipped to challenge for the crown as well. "It is our mission to bring Muang Thong back to our glory days. Balance and team building are the winning formulae we believe in, under the club's attacking football philosophy," said club director Ronnarit Suewaja during the unveiling of the club's new uniforms and the "Rise of the Kirins" campaign. "The addition of high-quality foreign players, the recruitment of talented Thai players, and promotion of young players to the first team will create the right balance for the team. Our goal is clear: we want to build a strong team in every aspect, a team that is ready to compete for success in every competition," he added. Muang Thong will play under Rangsan Viwatchaichok, who is recognised as one of Thailand's brightest coaching talents. The 46-year-old, who replaced Italian Gino Lettieri, is seen as a perfect coach to continue the club's philosophy of combining experienced players with young talent for long-term success. The Kirins finished in sixth place last season, having had 45 points from 30 matches, 25 behind Buriram United. Meanwhile, Port have appointed Photipong Lamsam as their new president. Photipong is the father of the president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and former Port chairwoman, Nualphan Lamsam.

Former Premier League journeyman Andros Townsend joins his 16th different club as he signs for little-known Thai minnows

Former England winger Andros Townsend has completed a surprise move to Thai minnows Kanchanaburi Power - the 16th different club of his career. Townsend, who earned 13 caps for the Three Lions between 2013 and 2016, put pen to paper after his new side were promoted to the Thai top-flight last season. He will wear the No 25 for Kanchanaburi and is clearly not ready to hang up his boots despite spending much of his summer commentating at the Club World Cup. The shock signing was officially announced on the personal Facebook page of Kanchanaburi's club chairman, Prawat Kithammakunnit. Townsend posed for a photo holding his new shirt on the Bridge over the River Kwai, one of Thailand's most important historical landmarks. The club are located in Mueang, around 93 miles west of Bangkok and near the border of Myanmar. Kanchanaburi Power were founded just eight years ago and have already gone through three rebrands, which have seen its name change from Singha Golden Bells to Dragon Pathumwan Kanchanaburi and finally, its current iteration. He played for several clubs in the Premier League and has now represented 16 different sides Townsend has been joined by fellow new signings Aboubakar Kamara, the former Fulham striker, and Luxembourg international Gerson Rodrigues. Fifteen-time Algeria international Mehdi Tahrat is also on the club's books. Townsend will wear 'Townsend Sr' on the back of his shirt instead of his last name. This is because he has a young son named Andros Townsend Jr. He made 23 appearances last season for Turkish side Antalyaspor, including 18 in the Super Lig, but quickly departed the club despite signing an initial two-year deal. The veteran forward previously represented the likes of Tottenham, Everton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace in the Premier League. His most recent stint in the top-flight came at Luton during the 2023-24 campaign. Townsend earned his first senior call-up for England in September 2013 and made his debut against Montenegro in a World Cup qualifier, in which he scored. He also found the target for the Three Lions against San Marino during Euro 2016 qualification and after scoring an equaliser against Italy in March 2015.

Red Giants face strong rivals in Asean Club Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor will battle for regional supremacy when the Asean Club Championship (ACC) kicks off next month. Super League champions JDT have been drawn in Group B, with Thai League runners-up True Bangkok United, Vietnam's Thep Xanh Nam Dinh, Singapore's Lion City Sailors, Cambodian champions PKR Svay Rieng, and the winner of a playoff between Laos' Ezra FC and Myanmar's Shan United. The Red Giants face a tougher route in Group A, which includes defending champions Buriram United, Thai heavyweights BG Pathum United, Vietnamese Cup winners Cong An Ha Noi, Singapore's Tampines Rovers, and the winner of the Brunei-Philippines playoff between Kasuka FC and Dynamic Herb Cebu. Despite the tough draw, Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi remains optimistic, viewing the tournament as a valuable test for his squad. "We will stick to our style, earn points, and aim to qualify for the next stage," said Kinoshi. "Our group opponents are strong — some are even competing in the Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE). This is a great chance to gauge our level against top regional clubs." The tournament will run until May next year.
