Malaysia Masters: Wei Chong-Kai Wun Seize Opportunity To Overcome 'Tired' Aaron-Wooi Yik

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- The demanding schedule faced by 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is believed to have given an advantage to national men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun to overcome their seniors in the Malaysia Masters 2025 final here today, though credit must go for their hardwork. Wei Chong-Kai Wun, entering as the fifth seeds, clinched their maiden title in the tournament by surprising the fourth seeds in the final at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, with scores of 21-12, 15-21, 21-16, in a match that lasted 50 minutes. This victory redeemed their disappointment of being runners-up in the 2023 edition. Kai Wun said they seized the opportunity after realizing that Aaron-Wooi Yik had reached two consecutive finals within a week, after a hard-fought victory at the Thailand Open 2025 last week, defeating William Kryger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer of Denmark, 20-22, 21-17, 21-12 in the final. "Perhaps their performance was slightly affected and their condition slowed down after playing almost every day lately. We played without pressure and didn't think about champion or runners-up; the important thing was to prioritise our performance today," he told reporters here today. Wei Chong said the communication aspect on court with his partner has also improved after facing a poor run of form previously. The 25-year-old also appreciated the role played by national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, who helped strengthen their mental resilience during difficult times. After winning the Indonesia Masters 2025 by defeating home favourites Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, 21-11, 21-19 last January, the world's eighth-ranked pair's performance dipped, with early exits in four consecutive tournaments, before enjoying the taste of success today. Kai Wun, delighted with their first home victory, especially over teammates Aaron-Wooi Yik, hopes to maintain the current momentum for the Singapore Open 2025 (May 27-June 1) followed by the Indonesia Open (June 3-8). "Playing at home is very special to the point where fans didn't know which side to support, but we are happy because first and second place belonged to Malaysian pairs," he said.

Malaysia Masters 2025: Shi Feng Makes History As First Chinese Men's Singles Champion

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- Not even the legendary Lin Dan achieved it but Li Shi Feng had etched his name in the history by becoming the first Chinese men's singles shuttler to win the Malaysia Masters by clinching the title at the 2025 edition held at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, today. The 25-year-old claimed the victory after outplaying unseeded Indian shuttler Srikanth Kidambi in straight sets, 21-11, 21-9 in just 36 minutes. 'I didn't expect to be the first at this event because I hadn't really paid attention to who won it before, but maybe recently I have paid some attention, but I think it's a very good start. So, being able to win deserves a celebration. 'Because in previous interviews, I mentioned that every year I reach the semi-finals and this time to break through and win the championship, I feel it's an affirmation and encouragement for myself,' he told reporters here today. The world No. 4 will now shift his focus to the Singapore Open 2025 which begins this Tuesday (June 27) where he is set to face Japan's Koki Watanabe in the first round. For the record, Lin Dan only made it to the first round at the Malaysia Masters in both 2018 and 2020. Meanwhile, top seed Wang Zhi Yi of China lived up to her billing as the top seed as she came from behind to defend women's singles title for two years in a row, beating her compatriot and second seed Han Yue, 13-21, 21-13, 21-18, in 75-minute duel. The world No. 2 Zhi Yi was delighted at retaining the Malaysia Masters title in her happy hunting ground, saying the victory has inspired her to continue competing in this country. In mixed doubles action, second seeds from China Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping took 63 minutes to stun top seed and teammates Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-17, 14-21, 21-16, to claim their back-to-back titles after winning the Thailand Open 2025 last week.

Aaron-Wooi Yik set up all-Malaysian final against Wei Chong-Kai Wun

MALAYSIA is guaranteed its first men's doubles title at the Malaysia Masters in 12 years as national pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik booked their spot for a historic 'civil war' against compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun for the 2025 edition, here, tomorrow. Buoyed by a dominant performance from Wei Chong-Kai Wun in the earlier semi-final today, the fourth-seeded pair did not disappoint the roaring home crowd in Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, here, as they stunned Denmark's top seeds and defending champions, Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in 64 minutes. Aaron-Wooi Yik were not at their best early on, trailing 9-11 at the interval but they rediscovered their rhythm to edge ahead 15-14 and held their nerve in the closing moments to clinch the opening set 21-19. The world number three pair then lost their grip in the second set, struggling to find momentum as they surrendered the second set to the world number one duo, 17-21. In the decider, the 2022 world champions came out firing at all corners, racing to a commanding 9-1 lead and marched to their maiden Malaysia Masters final with 21-15, thanks to a deadly powerful front shot from Wooi Yik. Aaron-Wooi Yik's best Malaysia Masters outings previously were reaching semi-finals twice in 2019 and 2022 since making a debut in the 2018 edition. Aaron said winning the opening set was crucial in setting the tone for the match and credited the strong support from home fans for inspiring them to derail the Danes' hopes of defending their Malaysia Masters title. The 28-year-old also hoped that he and Wooi Yik, together with Wei Chong and Kai Wun, can deliver a memorable all-Malaysian final to thrill the home fans especially with both pairs tied at two wins apiece in their head-to-head record. Wooi Yik, meanwhile, admitted that playing in back-to-back (individual) tournament finals after clinching the Badminton Asia Championships 2025 last month followed by Thailand Open 2025 title last week was a new and valuable experience for the pair. 'It is very difficult (playing back-to-back finals) but we will try to overcome this. We cannot set our mind that we are tired and cannot play, but we must keep going on,' he told reporters after the match. Wei Chong-Kai Wun had earlier dismantled Japan's 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi 21-12, 21-14 to book their second Malaysia Masters final appearance in two years. The world number eight duo emerged as the 2023 runners-up after going down to South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung 15-21, 24-22, 19-21.
