Thailand Post to focus on shipments to China

State logistics firm Thailand Post has targeted annual expansion of its parcel shipments from Thailand to China after they increased by 3% last year. The state agency wants to strengthen economic ties between the two countries through parcel delivery services for both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumers (B2C), said Thailand Post chief executive Dhanant Subhadrabandhu. In addition, the company has explored the use of multimodal transport options combining road and rail for shipments to China, while also leveraging its domestic network as a distribution hub for goods entering Thailand for onward global delivery via air and land. The 3% increase in shipments reflects Thailand Post's growing role as essential infrastructure connecting the borderless economy, he said. Among the most commonly sent items to China are documents, toys, cotton garments, supplements and amulets. "Postal routes have played a vital role in fostering communication and economic links between Thailand and China, supporting ties across sectors, from trade and business to community-level interactions," said Mr Dhanant. He said Thailand Post plans to expand its land transport network from China, offering commercial logistics solutions for B2B and B2C clients to reduce shipping costs and provide end-to-end customs clearance services at both origin and destination. To further cement ties between Thailand and China, Mr Dhanant said Thailand Post will partner with the Philatelists Association of Thailand to host the "Asian International Stamp Exhibition 2025: Letters of Friendship – From Bangkok to Beijing". The exhibition is scheduled from Aug 8-12 at the Grand Postal Building in Bangkok. He said operating profit for Thailand Post in the first half of 2025 totalled 630 million baht, up from 180 million year-on-year, attributed to growing logistics transactions and cost-effective management.

Govt to promote ornamental fish industry

The government is stepping up efforts to promote the ornamental fish industry as a key driver of agricultural exports, with the aim of strengthening global market share and increasing farm incomes. Bancha Sukkaew, director-general of the Department of Fisheries, said the global ornamental fish market was worth 10 billion baht in 2024. Thailand was among the world's top exporters with 11% of the global market and over 1 billion baht in exports. 'Thailand's climate, species diversity and advanced breeding techniques give us a natural advantage,' Mr Bancha said. 'Thai ornamental fish are highly regarded for their quality and uniqueness.' Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish), recently designated as Thailand's national aquatic animal, lead exports, generating 400 million baht or 40% of the total. Other key exports include goldfish (7.3%), guppies and rainbow fish (6.4%), ornamental shrimp (5.8%), and cichlids (3.9%). Major importers include the United States, the EU, and China, he said. Mr Bancha said the department has the 2023–2027 Ornamental Aquatic Animal Development Action Plan. It includes four strategies and 13 initiatives focusing on breeding, farming, marketing and export promotion. Efforts are also being made to streamline trade conditions, improve compliance with import regulations and enhance competitiveness through innovation, said Mr Bancha. A highlight of these promotional efforts was the 35th 'Fisheries Day with Loyalty' event in June. The competition, judged by Japanese experts and attended by Japan's ambassador to Thailand, looked to boost international confidence in Thai breeders. Looking ahead, Thailand is working with Thailand Post to create an export logistics framework for ornamental fish, helping farmers and SMEs access international markets directly, cutting out middlemen and boosting their earnings, he said. He said the department also had a recent discussion with Thailand Post to conclude testing of live aquatic animal transport via Thailand Post's delivery system. The meeting also considered expanding the list of species suitable for shipment beyond the original seven - namely betta fish, platy fish, guppies, frogs, eels, univalve molluscs and eggs, and aquatic plants. Following testing, three additional species were approved for inclusion: sea grapes, sea lettuce algae, and sea mushrooms. The Department of Fisheries will add these to the appendix of the memorandum of understanding (MoU), allowing farmers to ship them via the postal system later this month. In parallel, talks are underway to explore export options for ornamental aquatic animals via Thailand Post. 'This includes drafting a supplementary MoU outlining the scope of cooperation for overseas shipments. The aim is to provide more export channels for breeders, farms and businesses, especially those dealing in betta and ornamental fish, so they can export directly without relying on middlemen,' he said.

Thailand Post offers virtual service

The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry plans to support state-run logistics provider Thailand Post as it offers a neutral banking agent service to prospective virtual bank operators. Thailand Post's core strength is its nationwide network of carriers that can provide first-mile services, said DES permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-at. He said Thailand Post specialises in door-to-door delivery and has many years of experience, with a combined workforce of more than 25,000 carriers who know every metre of the country and are familiar with local communities. Although virtual bank operators will provide the majority of services via their virtual banking systems, Thailand Post can facilitate operations through the provision of contact points, serving virtual banks' operations through its offices and network, according to the logistics provider. The proposed service could focus on groups such as unbanked people or migrant labourers who earn their income daily as cash. Mail carriers can take their cash and deposit it in the virtual banking system, according to Thailand Post. Dhanant Subhadrabandhu, president of Thailand Post, said the state enterprise began discussing the business potential of a neutral banking agent service with a winner of a virtual bank licence. He said Thailand Post could provide several forms of operational support to all of the virtual bank lenders. "One targeted group of the service is migrant workers and Thais who do not receive a pay slip from their employers," said Mr Dhanant. Mail carriers could offer a variety of virtual banking services and related services to people at their residences, backed by Thailand Post's 1,600 post office branches countrywide, he said. Thailand Post currently operates a banking agent service for all of the country's banks, which allows people to deposit and withdraw their money at post office branches. Mr Dhanant said the state enterprise wants to turn last-mile delivery into a first-mile service, making Thailand Post the first choice for Thais for every kind of service. Moreover, Thailand Post recently adjusted its business strategy to focus more on specialised logistics services to cope with the risk of volume uncertainty associated with its delivery services. These specialised logistics include the delivery of medical supplies for both people and pets. Last month, the Finance Ministry approved three virtual banking licence applicants, allowing them to establish the country's first virtual banks. The new banks are expected to commence operations within a year from the date of licence approval. The winners were ACM Holding Co (TrueMoney), which is backed by the Charoen Pokphand Group; Krungthai Bank in collaboration with Advanced Info Service and PTT Oil and Retail Business; and the SCB X consortium of holding company Siam Commercial Bank, South Korea's largest digital bank KakaoBank, and WeBank, a global digital bank renowned for its advanced technology. The successful applicants were selected after a rigourous review by the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Thailand from five submissions received between March 20 and Sept 19, 2024.

Tie up rolls out novel e-Transcript service

State enterprise Thailand Post has joined forces with Chulalongkorn University to launch an e-Transcript service, a pioneering system for issuing academic transcripts in digital format via its Prompt Post application. The service is set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025. The tie-up ushers in a service that is the first of its kind in Thailand, elevating academic document delivery by making it faster, more secure and accessible anytime and from anywhere, the partners note. Thailand Post aims to expand the service nationwide, with the goal of establishing a digital documentation standard across educational institutions, and potentially extending its applications to public and private sector organisations in the near future. Prof Wilert Puriwat, president of Chulalongkorn University, said the collaboration with Thailand Post represents a significant step forward in making Chulalongkorn University the first institution in Thailand to fully implement a comprehensive e-Transcript system -- one that ensures both accuracy and robust security. "This initiative revolutionises how university registrar offices operate. It improves workflow efficiency, reduces processing time, helps prevent document forgery and minimises the risk of data breaches." Most importantly, it offers external stakeholders, such as employers or universities, confidence that the information issued by Chulalongkorn University is verified and authentic, said Prof Wilert. Asst Prof Ake Pattaratanakun, chief brand officer of Chulalongkorn University and chairman of the executive board of Thailand Post, added that Thailand Post is confident that in 2025 its digital business roadmap will transform Thailand Post from a logistics provider into a trusted platform and data service partner across sectors. Dhanant Subhadrabandhu, president of Thailand Post, said the e-Transcript service offers a seamless digital solution for students to request academic records, sent directly to their Thailand Post digital postboxes via the Prompt Post app. This innovation offers multiple advantages -- document encryption for security and fraud prevention, 24/7 access via any device and real-time integration with external databases via an application programming interface. It also aligns with the principles of green universities, reducing paper waste and providing secure, centralised data management within a personal digital postbox, he added. "Users can monitor every step of the process -- from request submission and approval to delivery -- ensuring transparency and peace of mind." Prof Mana Sriyudthsak, director of registrar, Chulalongkorn University, noted that the integration of e-Transcript via Prompt Post makes Chulalongkorn the first university in Thailand to make its registrar operations fully digital.
