Isle of Wight bin worker dies 12 days after 'serious incident'
A refuse worker has died 12 days after being injured in a "serious incident" involving a bin man was airlifted to hospital after being hurt on Spencer Road in Ryde, Isle of Wight, on 29 July. Isle of Wight Council, which confirmed he died on Sunday, said it was a "profound loss" for the community. The authority said it was cooperating with the Health and Safety Executive as it carried out an investigation. It added: ''We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our valued waste collection team members."While it is important to allow this process to take its course, we want to assure everyone that we are fully committed to supporting the investigation."In a statement, waste management operator Thalia said: "Our deepest condolences are with their family, friends and colleagues, and we ask that their privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time." Thalia Osborne Wins 2025 North Island Young Winemaker Of The Year
Congratulations to Thalia Osborne from Ash Ridge who was announced as the 2025 Tonnellerie de Mercurey North Island Young Winemaker of the Year following the competition held on 24 July at EIT in Hawke's Bay. She is thrilled her hard work has paid off and earned her a place at the national finals. Congratulations also goes to Toby Priestley from Linden Estate in Esk Valley who came second. There were four contestants in total, the others being Mikaela Salmon from Ash Ridge and Caitlyn Moeller from EIT. All the contestants took out a section, highlighting their strong winemaking skills and knowledge. Amongst other sections, Thalia won the Indevin Wine Judging Section and the Fruitfed Supplies Best Speech. Caitlyn won the Constellation Brands Laboratory Section; Toby took out the Judges Choice and In Market sections where the contestants had to create a Bordeaux blend suitable for the US market and pitch it to a panel of judges; and Mikaela won the Vin Olympics which took place in front of a crowd at lunchtime. This was followed by a gourmet BBQ prepared by Fruitfed Supplies. As the overall winner, Thalia, won a Fruitfed Supplies Field Trip, wine storage with a Personal Cellar for a year and $1,000 cash. Toby won $750 cash, as well as other wine related prizes. Thalia will compete in the National Final at Lincoln University on 26 August. The national finalists will then deliver their speeches at the New Zealand Wine 2025 Celebration Dinner at Te Pae on 28 August, when the overall winner will also be announced. The finalists will compete not only for the prestigious title of the 2025 Tonnellerie de Mercurey Young Winemaker of the Year, but also an amazing prize package which includes a visit to the Tonnellerie de Mercurey (cooperage) in Burgundy, be an associate judge in the New World Wine Awards and review wines in DrinksBiz magazine. There is also the opportunity for the finalists to win prizes for the Constellation Laboratory Section, the Indevin Wine Judging Section and the best Fruitfed Supplies Speech. Citizens Theatre to reopen after 7 years with free events
A BELOVED Glasgow institution is set to open after redevelopment with a community-led procession through the area. The Citizens Theatre is reopening after seven years, with plans for special performances and an opportunity for visitors to explore the revamped venue. On August 23, two giant puppets inspired by Greek theatre goddesses Melpomene and Thalia will lead a procession of residents, performers and musicians as they escort the characters of Comedy and Tragedy to their theatrical home. READ MORE: BBC denies editing Irish language out of new CMAT song The theatre's doors will then be thrown open for a weekend-long open house, where visitors can enjoy free access to workshops, pop-up events and the main stage. Catrin Evans, participate director at the Citizens Theatre, said: "The Homecoming Festival is inspired by our fantastic new building which we know so many people are keen to get inside – but it's also about so much more. "It's about reconnecting with our neighbours, welcoming new voices, and celebrating creativity itself as a form of home-making. We're offering a range of activities so that everyone and anyone can step into the Citizens Theatre, try something new, take themselves on a journey and feel that this space belongs to them." From August 28 to September 5, the Homecoming Festival continues with guided tours, taster workshops, and special events. Then, on September 12, live performance makes a return with Small Acts of Love, a new play by Frances Poet, featuring music by Deacon Blue's Ricky Ross. Surrey pupil, 14, stars in global TV series Washington Black
A budding young actress from Surrey is appearing in a Disney+ mini was chosen to play a key supporting role in Washington Black, which is based on a book by Canadian author Esi Edugyan about a boy's escape from slavery in Barbados. Fourteen-year-old Thalia was cast as Tanna, the younger version of British actress Iola Evans' character."Being part of Washington Black has been unforgettable. I've learned so much from the amazing cast and crew, I'm so excited for everyone to see the show," Thalia said. The pupil said the filming took place three years ago and she travelled to Canada and Mexico to film her scenes. Thalia's mother, Harriet, said Showdown Theatre Arts, where Thalia honed her acting skills for several years, told the family the casting director of the TV series was searching for an actress to play young decided to try out for the role and created a tape for the audition."Once the audition was submitted we tried not to think about it," Harriet said. "I was at my friend's place when I got the call and they told me I got the role. I squealed off the top of my lungs in excitement!" Thalia said Thalia was selected out of 50 shortlisted candidates.
